Chaos is the overarching antagonist of the Sailor Moon franchise. It is a mysterious, yet malevolent force of darkness and formless primordial entity, representing the ultimate force of evil, destruction, and disharmony. It is said that all evils are manifestations of her, as well the one behind the Shadow Galactica. It is an immense being who lurks in the centre of the galaxy - Sagittarius Zero Star - and the primordial void that existed before even Cosmos. Being that all the Chaos-Spawn are Aspects of itself, it may utilize the abilities of them all.
It is the conceptual opposite of Cosmos, an embodiment of darkness and a corruption waiting to happen in every living thing. It is an abstract concept and a living, sentient thing, representative of dark forces in general and of eternal strife between light and dark. All major antagonists in the series, including Queen Metalia, Death Phantom, Pharaoh 90, Queen Nehellenia, and Sailor Galaxia, are traced to Chaos as their creator, which are the fragments of Chaos are all tainted with its power and act as a proxy of it in many story arcs. It aims to engulf the universe with darkness and despair and thus leads its powers against those of light, headed by Sailor Moon. Its ultimate aim was to destroy everything positive, which made it one of the most dangerous threats that Sailor has ever faced.
In Sailor Moon Cosmos Chaos was voiced by Mitsuki Saiga in the Japanese version and by Kari Wahlgren in English.
Appearance[]
Chaos does not have any fixed form and most of the time has been depicted as a 'shadowy mass' or formless. Depending on its influence, it can be in many manifestations. In the manga, an abstract nature was given much emphasis, appearing to be overwhelming rather than taking physical being. In Crystal/Cosmos, it is a purplish mass of darkness, with two red dots serving as his eyes.
In its "Chaos Galaxia" form, it possesses Galaxia's body after corrupting her. It gives the body a more humanoid, glamorous appearance that belies its sinister essence. That is a godlike yet malevolent aura, blending beauty and terror in this form.
In its "Sailor Chaos" form, it takes a much more feminine form, with red hair in the style of a Medusa, and having a black crop top with a sailor collar around her neck.
Personality[]
It is defined by an insatiable lust for destruction and dominance, manipulative and patient, cunning in its ways as it works through its proxies to extend disharmony and darkness throughout the universe. While it embodies pure evil, it is highly intelligent and calculated, using deception and corruption to achieve its goals.
It's nihilistic to the core, considering order, harmony, and light to be pointless and seeking to reduce the universe to an eternal state of nothingness and chaos. Chaos is relentless in its ambition to overpower Cosmos and wipe out the hope and love brought along by the Sailor Guardians.
Biography[]
Manga/Sailor Moon Cosmos[]
Having existed since the Milky Way Galaxy came into being, Chaos is an entity that failed to become a star and resided within the Galaxy Cauldron, from which all life in the galaxy originates. An indifferent being of pure darkness desiring to consume all light for a since of wholeness, Chaos seeks the Legendary Silver Crystal and spawned Queen Nehelenia, Queen Metalia, Wiseman, and Pharaoh 90 with that goal ingrained in them. She also arranged Sailor Galaxia into coming to Sagittarius Zero Star, exploiting the rogue Sailor Guardian's ambition to bring Sailor Moon to her. Once Galaxia succeeds, Chaos disposes her despite Usagi's attempt to save her. While told she would need to destroy the Galaxy Cauldron to kill Chaos at the cost of bringing death to the galaxy, Sailor Moon instead jumps into the Cauldron with the intent of sealing Chaos within her body. But Chaos resists at the last minute resistance and ends up destroying herself rather than becoming a part of Usagi.
But Sailor Moon's decision to preserve Galaxy Caludron would result in Chaos being eventually reborn as the humanoid Sailor Chaos, who would be locked in an eternal struggle with Usagi after her transition into Sailor Cosmos.
90's Anime[]

In the anime, Sailor Galaxia battled against Chaos. In order to defeat it, Galaxia sealed it within herself to save the galaxy. Eventually, Chaos gained control over her and started stealing Star Seeds throughout the galaxy. In the last episode, Sailor Moon frees Galaxia from its control and returned Chaos to its rightful place within the hearts of everyone where it could no longer do any harm.
Trivia[]
- Chaos is named after Chaos from Greek mythology. Chaos was a primordial god, a dark shapeless void, and the original state of existence from which the first entities appeared. The mythological Chaos was neither good nor evil, and was rather just the ultimate expression of nothingness and the antithesis of Cosmos.
- Chaos' concept as a force of evil whose repeated incarnations serve as the main foes of the Sailor Scouts is similar to the Great Leader from the Kamen Rider franchise, whose incarnations repeatedly menaced the Kamen Riders.
- In the manga and the later anime reboot releases (Sailor Moon Crystal, Eternal, and Cosmos), Chaos can be considered the overarching antagonist of the series due to the fact all the major villains are incarnations of Chaos. However, this fact is unconfirmed in the 90's anime.
