~ Tikal after Chaos assumes his Perfect form. |
Chaos is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Dr. Eggman) of the 1998 platform game Sonic Adventure.
Initially the first known guardian of the Chaos and Master Emeralds, Chaos is a powerful mutated Chao with nearly complete control over water. While taking up that role, Chaos had also watched over a colony of Chao around the area, and was once a good friend of Tikal.
When Tikal's father Chief Pachacamac attacked the Chao under Chaos' care to claim the emeralds for his own ambitions, Chaos' rage drove him to madness. Tikal was forced to seal him and herself within the Master Emerald to stop his vengeful rampage, until Dr. Ivo Robotnik released him in an attempt to use his power to take over the world.
Biography[]
Origins[]
In prehistoric times, a race of extraterrestrial beings known as the "Ancients" lost their world to a cataclysmic entity and escaped to Earth with the Chaos Emeralds, having been guided there by them following the energy signature of the Master Emerald. When they learned that the entity followed them, they made preparations and had a small group bring the Chaos Emeralds to the Master Emerald. There, they constructed an altar to house all the Emeralds, with the Master Emerald sitting in the center while the Chaos Emeralds sat atop the surrounding pillars.
Sometime after the Ancients' extinction, the altar became revered by other civilizations which grew around it, as well as the home to a colony of Chao, the devolved descendants of the Ancients. One of these Chao somehow became mutated by the power of the Master Emerald. The mutation gave it a liquid-like body with a similar appearance of it's ancestors. Since then, it used its new powers to protect the altar, the emeralds and the other Chao inhabiting it. He also guaranteed the clean water surrounding the altar.
Meeting Tikal and Being Sealed[]
Around four-thousand years ago, Tikal, a young girl from the still-thriving Knuckles Clan, discovered the shrine and became friends with the local Chao with her gentle nature. Upon which, Chaos revealed himself to Tikal and shows its trust by allowing her to approach the shrine, where she discovered both the Master Emerald and Chaos Emeralds, recognizing them from her grandmother's prayer. Sometime later, Tikal returns to the shrine to warn Chaos that her warmongering father, Chief Pachacamac, planned to raid the altar and take the Chaos and Master Emeralds by force so that they can destroy all their enemies, and tells him that he must evacuate everyone present. When she learns that he is bound to the shrine and thus unable to leave, Tikal promises to talk with her father again in hopes of changing his mind.
Unfortunately, her attempt fails as Pachacamac and several of his warriors approach the shrine with the intent of taking the emeralds. Despite her father's demands to move aside, both Tikal and the Chao stand their ground, and so Pachacamac orders his men to charge through them, injuring them. Enraged at seeing those he loved hurt, Chaos appears before Pachacamac just as the chief approached the Master Emerald. He then absorbs the negative energy of the Chaos Emeralds to become Perfect Chaos, destroying the chief and his soldiers. Consumed by its own power, Perfect Chaos then lays waste to the Knuckles Clan, and threatened to do the same with the rest of the world. In order to stop its rampage, the still-injured Tikal goes to the Master Emerald and uses her prayer to seal both Chaos and herself inside of it. The resulting event caused a large section of land to levitate into the sky, thus becoming Angel Island.
Remorseful of what they've done and inspired by Tikal's sacrifice, the surviving members of the Knuckles Clan then vowed to never let the same tragedy occur again by forever protecting the Master Emerald from any who would attempt to steal it. In the present day, Knuckles, the last surviving member of the Knuckles Clan and possibly the Echidna race, was placed in charge of guarding the Master Emerald on Angel Island. He never knew why, but regardless, he knew it was his duty. Since then, he has protected it from thieves like Dr. Ivo Robotnik with his immense strength, as well as the help of other heroes like Sonic the Hedgehog and Tails the Fox.
Sonic Adventure/Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut[]
At some point, Dr. Robotnik somehow learned of the existence of Chaos within the Master Emerald from a stone tablet, and thus created a new plan to use the being to his advantage. Within his new flying warship, the Egg Carrier, he secretly traveled to Angel Island one night while Knuckles was dozing off and somehow shattered the Master Emerald, thus releasing the vengeful Chaos onto the world once again, as well as the spirit of Tikal. Knuckles is shocked at the sight of this and assumes that Chaos was the one responsible. The echidna attacks it, but Chaos overpowers him and makes his escape by disappearing into a puddle.
Later on, Robotnik then gets into contact with the creature and forms a pact with it: if the doctor helps it gather the Chaos Emeralds to re-assume its perfect form, Chaos will serve him by destroying Station Square so he can build his own city known as "Robotnik Land". He then tests the creature's might by having it run rampant across the city. The authorities attempt to stop its rampage, but their weapons are ineffective. Then Sonic appears and does battle with the water-being, and eventually triumphed. After being bested by the hedgehog, Chaos makes its escape through a water drain.
When Robotnik managed to steal the purple Chaos Emerald from Tails at Mystic Ruins, he calls for Chaos, who appears next to him. Robotnik then throws the emerald at Chaos and it absorbs it, gaining a new form. After Robotnik boasts his nefarious scheme to Sonic and Tails, he then throws a flash grenade so he could escape with the creature.
As the story goes on, Eggman keeps feeding Chaos more and more Emeralds, until Sonic makes it onto the Egg Carrier, and defeat Chaos, with Knuckles subsequently fighting and finishing him off right afterwards, knocking out the six Emeralds he had at that point. The Egg Carrier crashes, and Knuckles holds on to the Emeralds, thus ending the main story.
Knuckles takes back all of the Emerald Shards, and the six Chaos Emeralds back to Angel Island, sending it back into the sky. As Eggman plots his revenge, Chaos finds and attacks him. Eggman flies to Angel Island to get Knuckles' help, but Chaos followed him and made quick work out of both of them. Sonic goes to see what is happening, and Knuckles tells him about Chaos' return. Sonic and Tails look for the final Chaos Emerald in the Tornado, but Chaos gets to it before them.
Using the power of the seven Emeralds, as he did thousands of years ago, he becomes Perfect Chaos. He floods the city of Station Square, and destroys everything in his path. Eggman, enraged that Chaos betrayed him, tries to use a new Egg Carrier to defeat him, but with a single blast, Chaos rips the ship in two. Just when all seems lost, Tikal shows herself to Sonic, and tells him that they have to seal Chaos away before he could do any more damage. Sonic refuses, saying that if he is still angry it will just happen again. So, Sonic's friends gather the Emeralds, and Tails tells Sonic that Chaos only used the negative powers of the Emeralds, and that Sonic can still use the positive powers they possess. After this speech, the Emeralds have their colors returned, and Sonic becomes Super Sonic.
After Chaos is defeated, he calms down and returns to his more friendly nature that he had before the shrine was attacked. Pleased, Tikal thanks Sonic, and she and Chaos rise into the sky, disappearing without a trace.
Sonic Battle[]
Sonic Generations[]
Chaos reappears only as Perfect Chaos in the Station Square as the second boss in the Console and PC versions of Sonic Adventure. He starts to go on a rampage. Luckily, Sonic did not need to use the Chaos Emeralds to become Super Sonic and defeat Perfect Chaos. Sonic rushes and speeds up to Perfect Chaos' body, hitting his brain several times. After that, Perfect Chaos was defeated and sunk back into the water.
Sonic Forces[]
A duplicate of Chaos appears in Sonic Forces as a minor antagonist. He is one of Dr. Eggman's minions paired alongside copies of Metal Sonic, Shadow, and Zavok that answer to the enigmatic villain Infinite on Eggman's behalf after the Eggman Empire conquered most of the world. Chaos tried to kill Tails while he was repairing Omega, only to be defeated by Sonic's younger self, Classic Sonic. Eventually, after Infinite and Eggman are defeated, the clones of Metal Sonic, Chaos, Shadow, and Zavok vanished, leaving the Resistance victorious in the battle for reclaiming the world.
Other Media[]
Sonic X[]
Chaos becomes the main villain in the Chaos Saga in the Sonic X anime. Much like Sonic Adventure, Chaos was released by Dr. Eggman and gets stronger with each Chaos Emerald he obtains. Chaos also takes on the same forms as the video versions such as Chaos 0, Chaos 1, Chaos 2, Chaos 4, Chaos 6, and Perfect Chaos. Much like his video game counterpart, the anime Chaos was defeated by Super Sonic.
Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood[]
Although Chaos does not appear in the game and is only mentioned, he played a significant part in the backstory. Because Chaos destroyed the Knuckles Clan, it allowed their rivals, the Nocturnus Clan, to reign supreme in the ancient world before their civilization was pulled into the Twilight Cage.
Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games[]
An ice version of Perfect Chaos appears as an obstacle during Sonic's version of Dream Figure Skating. The only difference is that it was not actually hurting anyone and was mainly just there to be a part of the show.
Lego Dimensions[]
Chaos appears as the final boss in the Sonic the Hedgehog Level Pack of LEGO Dimensions, where a giant Chaos 0 attacks the Death Egg seeking the stolen Chaos Emeralds. It fought against Sonic until Sonic could turn into Super Sonic and defeat the monster.
Super Smash Bros.[]
Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]
Chaos appears as a sticker that can be equipped by any character. When equipped, he slightly increases the amount of health recovered when eating food.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
Chaos appears as a primary grab-type spirit that increases water attacks. His spirit battle is against a Metal Inkling on the Battlefield form of Fourside that grows to giant size when at critical damage.
Forms[]
Chaos 0[]
Chaos 0 is Chaos' first form. It is missing its tail (which had been swallowed along with a Chaos Emerald by Froggy), and possesses no Chaos Emeralds. This form of Chaos is considerably vulnerable despite its all-water composition, and can be defeated by striking its exposed brain. This form is fought only by Sonic at the beginning of his story.
Chaos 1[]
Chaos with one Chaos Emerald. This form only features minor changes from the first form. Chaos' head becomes broader and his right arm becomes bulkier, developing a rigid endoskeleton (with the Chaos Emerald at the center of the "hand") and pincer-like fingers. This form is never fought, but seen after Sonic or Tails defeats Eggman the first time and by Knuckles in the hotel before transforming into Chaos 2.
Chaos 2[]
Chaos' third form with two Chaos Emeralds is identical to Chaos 1, but now both arms are bulky and have exoskeletons. This form is only fought in Knuckles' story, in the hotel.
Chaos 4[]
With four Emeralds, Chaos takes on a hunched dolphin-like form with a bony tail and fin-like protrusions in addition to his arms. He is found in the Mystic Ruins and can be fought by Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles.
Chaos 6[]
With six Chaos Emeralds, Chaos undergoes a much more dramatic change. In addition to becoming larger, Chaos becomes arachnid-like with several eyes and tendrils, a mouth, and regains his true tail from Froggy. In this form, Chaos also moves his brain to the center of his body, making him considerably harder to damage. He is fought on the Egg Carrier, and can be fought by Sonic, Big, or Knuckles.
Perfect Chaos[]
After absorbing negative energy from all seven Emeralds, Chaos 0 takes on an immense reptilian form, and gains several new powers. In this form, Perfect Chaos can control far more water than before, and can create water tornadoes and fire lasers. This form was so powerful that he nearly managed to kill all the echidnas on Angel Island and flooded Station Square, leaving it in ruins. The form could only be stopped by the power of Super Sonic, using the positive energy from the Chaos Emeralds against the titan. This form is also fought as the fourth boss of Sonic Generations, fighting Modern Sonic instead of Super Sonic.
