“ | Greetings. I am (name given by the player). | „ |
~ Chara introducing themselves at the end of the Genocide Route and its subsequent playthroughs. |
“ | Chara: Now, we have reached the absolute. There is nothing left for us here. Let us erase this pointless world, and move on to the next. The Player: DO NOT. Chara: No...? Hmm... How curious. You must have misunderstood. SINCE WHEN WERE YOU THE ONE IN CONTROL? |
„ |
~ Chara, should the player refuse Chara's offer to destroy the world. |
Chara, also known as the Fallen Human, is the overarching antagonist of the 2015 indie RPG game Undertale.
They are the adopted child of Toriel and Asgore Dreemurr and the adopted sibling and best friend of their son Asriel. It's implied numerous times that Chara is the true identity of the narrator, guiding Frisk throughout the Underground and helping them no matter the route they choose. Although this is a popular theory among the fandom, this has not been fully proven to be canon.
Chara is the character the player names at the start of the game, and not Frisk (the player character). Chara was the one who devised the plan to kill seven humans to break the Barrier, with this plan later adopted by Asgore after Chara's death.
According to several characters, Chara's personality mirrors the protagonist’s in the Pacifist Route, with both being described as a beacon of hope for the monsters trapped underground. A human SOUL with the power of determination can, in Chara's own words, awaken them from death. Frisk and/or the player's behavior also influences Chara's, with good deeds bringing about their salvation, while evil deeds in the Genocide Run prove that the purpose of their reincarnation was power.
At full Level of Violence (LOVE/LV), Chara is one of the few beings in the game capable of directly challenging the player's influence over the world.
The game is purposely vague on Chara and their character, but upon inspection much can be found about their character through narration and how they are described and thought of by the monsters.
Physical Appearance[]
Chara is a child—like Frisk, their age and gender is unknown. They have beige skin and dark brown eyes that can seemingly turn red with brown hair that reaches to their neck with rosy cheeks. They wear a green long-sleeved sweater with a brown collar and a light yellow/cream stripe in the middle with brown pants and shoes. Chara can change their face, which they can have hollow eyes or a more distorted, melting face.
Biography[]
Past[]
For reasons they never disclosed even to their closest friend Asriel, Chara despised humanity, despite being human themselves. They climbed a mountain for an "unhappy reason", and once coming across the cave that led to the Underground, they tripped on a root and tumbled into the hole where the monsters lived their lives after the war against humans.
A young Boss Monster by the name of Asriel Dreemurr befriended Chara, and his mother and father Toriel and Asgore took Chara in and raised them as a second child and beloved sibling to Asriel. They grow fond of each other.
A notable event during Chara's stay with the Dreemurrs was when they attempted to bake a pie with Asriel for their adoptive father, King Asgore. As children are known to do, they mixed up "buttercups" and "cups of butter" and accidentally poisoned Asgore. Asriel says that he should just have "laughed off" the incident like his best friend Chara did, although it could have been for another reason.
For a certain plan, Chara later decided to take their own life by poisoning themself through consuming buttercups like the ones they had accidentally hurt their father with. Their plan was to give Asriel their SOUL, thereby allowing him to pass through the Barrier that trapped monsters underground and take six human SOULs from the surface. These could then be used to destroy the Barrier and free his people.
Upon reaching the village where Chara had grown up, the humans attacked Asriel on the assumption that he killed Chara. Upon seeing that the humans were hurting Asriel Chara begs him to fight back and stop them but Asriel refuses, dooming the both of them. He returned to the Underground to die before his parents, in the Royal Garden. Greatly angered, Asgore decides to wage war against the humans.
Asriel's remains and memories were placed into one of the golden flowers that grew around his dead body by Alphys' experiments. The flower was imbued with DETERMINATION, which caused Asriel to be reborn as Flowey. Chara's essence and consciousness seemed to have been resurrected as a spirit in Frisk's body.
Undertale[]
Genocide Route[]
In the Genocide Route, the player corrupts Frisk (and in turn, denies Chara's salvation) and causes them to become violent, similar to Flowey. Chara's morality (which was already wroth and furious) becomes even more vengeful and psychopathic. As they kill more and more monsters, Chara begins to assume control wherever possible to speed the game up, much like a typical RPG player grinding. Under the player's guidance, they watch Frisk kill every monster in the game, including Toriel, Papyrus, and Undyne, all of whom try to convince the player to stop. Chara's speech also becomes increasingly first person, referring to their drawing of a flower as "My drawing", unlike in the True Pacifist Route, where they refer to it as "A drawing of a flower" in New Home.
Upon arrival at Asgore's palace, Sans confronts Frisk, surprisingly and efficiently proving to be possibly the most challenging character in the game. Despite having the weakest of powers (his HP, ATK and DEF stats being a mere one point each), he dodges the player's hits, which makes the entire battle a struggle to land a single, fatal blow. Furthermore, Sans' attacks are continuous and are enhanced by some sort of venom which makes them deal continuous damage to Frisk's SOUL as long as it is making contact with them, rather than a single hit like every other attack in the game.
The last hit is delivered by the player after Sans falls asleep, which misses, before another hit is delivered, presumably by Frisk without the player’s influence, though it is not certain and also speculated to be Chara who did it. He then reminds the player that he warned them of the consequences before "heading off to Grillby's" and seemingly dying and dissolving off-screen. Frisk, or possibly Chara, then proceeds to attack Asgore, even when he kindly spoke to them.
Asgore is then killed by a desperate Flowey, who was enthusiastic about the player's choice to destroy the Underground's entire population, but also knows he is going to be killed as well. Flowey claims that he had never betrayed Chara, that his betrayals at the start of the game and when he warned Asgore of Chara's arrival were mere pranks, and begs the player not kill him as he revealed his true identity as Asriel Dreemurr by modifying his face and mimicking his voice.
Flowey is then killed, presumably after Chara takes control of the human, and the Fallen Human reveals themselves to the player, claiming that all the power stats represent themselves, they ask the player to join them in destroying the world. At this point, the player can back out only by closing the game (through Task Manager on Windows/Force Quit on Mac or red Close button), but choosing either option results in Chara destroying the world and closing the game themselves in the process.
If the player reopens the game, they will only encounter a void in the remnants of the Underground, with howling wind playing in the background. After ten minutes, Chara offers them to return the world in exchange for their SOUL. To fully restore the world, the player has to accept. Otherwise, Chara will leave until the player restarts the game and waits ten more minutes.
If the world is restored and the player completes a True Pacifist Route, its ending is modified to that of a "Soulless True Pacifist Route". If Frisk chooses to stay with Toriel, Frisk wakes up with Chara's features and glowing red eyes, while emitting a slower version of Photoshop Flowey's signature laugh. If Frisk claims to have places to go, Chara replaces Frisk in the picture in the end and crosses everyone else's faces out. Both endings may be a reminder to the player of their genocide and they are not above consequences, even if they do a True Pacifist Route. The former option is indicatively revealed that Chara can take full possession of Frisk, having exchanged Frisk's SOUL in return, while the latter may imply that Chara killed the main characters.
If the player completes the Genocide Route a second time, Chara will speak to the player again. Chara describes them as "wracked with a perverted sentimentality", stating that they could not understand doing a second Genocide Route. They will then make the same offer to destroy the world as they did before, with the same results of the player's choice in both routes. However, no matter whether the player chose either option, the game reopens normally even after the world's destruction.
Neutral and True Pacifist Routes[]
At any time, should the player fail to meet an area's requirements to continue the Genocide Route (save Sans, who kills Frisk if they accept his offer when he pretends to spare them), you have the option to continue without grinding for more EXP and attain one of the Neutral endings.
Throughout these routes, just as in No Mercy, Chara provides flavor text for Frisk and the player. However, these routes show a very different side to their personality. Gone are the blunt and harsh fragmented sentences of the No Mercy Route. Chara shows themselves to be very sarcastic and contumelious, make puns and jokes, and become so overcome with emotion during the fights against their parents that they fall completely silent. They clearly have a large vocabulary for someone so young and enjoy describing the world around them.
During the True Pacifist final boss fight against Asriel, it is implied that Chara provides memories to save Asriel as otherwise there is no way for Frisk to get those exact memories. Through Chara's memories of Asriel, his rampage is finally stopped, and he uses the power of all of the SOULs he has absorbed to break the Barrier and free monsterkind. In this run, it's heavily implied that Chara found peace since they describe the bag of the dog food from Alphys's laboratory as "half-full" (while as "half-empty" if anyone is killed), which indicates that they are optimistic, and after the credits, if the player reloads their save file by reopening the game, Flowey implies that everything Chara was worried about is realized (monsters' freedom and peace), thus they can "take a deep breath".
Of note is the fact that when Flowey regains his original body at the end of the True Pacifist Route and transforms back into Asriel, he mistakes Frisk for Chara. When he realizes his mistake, the player learns that the name Chara, or any name they chose at the creation of their save file, isn't the protagonist’s, but the first human's. This realization doesn't occur in the Neutral or Genocide Routes, as Asriel isn't properly SAVED and still holds on to the memory of his sibling.
Personality[]
“ | I know why (name given by the player) climbed the mountain. It wasn't for a very happy reason. Frisk. I'll be honest with you. (name given by the player) hated humanity. Why they did, they never talked about it. But they felt very strongly about that. | „ |
~ Asriel describing Chara during the game's epilogue. |
While initially cast in a sympathetic light, Asriel admits at the end of the True Pacifist Route that Chara "...wasn't really the greatest person." Asriel states that Chara climbed Mount Ebott for an unhappy reason, and adds that Chara "hated humanity" for reasons unknown." However this is only meant to illustrate that he has stopped idolizing his former sibling. It does not necessarily mean that Chara was completely heartless or psychopathic, or that Asriel doesn't love or care about them anymore. As for how exactly Chara treated Asriel when they were alive still remains open for interpretation.
At the end of the Genocide Route, Chara behaves in a polite, deliberate manner, thanking the protagonist for guiding them, and teaching them that power was the reason they awoke. They tell them that their determination woke them from death when entering the Underground. However, if the protagonist refuses to destroy the world, Chara tells the player they aren't the one in control, before destroying the world anyway. But while it may seem like they're nothing more than a straightforward megalomaniac only interested in power, a number of things that make their actions all the more ambiguous.
Should the player return to the destroyed world, Chara will call out the player for being the one who brought the world and "pushed everything to its edge." Chara even calls out the player further as they tell them "You think you're above consequences." and won't give back the world if they answer “Yes”. Not only that, Chara expresses uneasiness towards player should they do a second Genocide Run, saying that they are wracked with a "perverted sentimentality." They even tell the player that if they recreate the world again, "another path would be better suited."
Powers & Abilities[]
- Non-Corporeal: As a spirit, Chara has no physical form unless possessing a being with a red SOUL that is connected with Chara.
- Fear Manipulation: Chara's presence during the Genocide Route induces fear into certain monsters, and even Flowey, a soulless being.
- World Destruction & Creation: Chara can seemingly destroy the world with a powerful slash, as shown after clicking "ERASE" or "DO NOT". Later on, Chara offers a deal to recreate the world if the Player/Frisk give their SOUL to Chara.
- 4th Wall Awareness: The fact that Chara states "You made your choice long ago," implying memory, after you complete a second Genocide Route and click "DO NOT" suggests that they are aware of the timelines and remember what the Player does to some extent, considering a post-Genocide ending has a severe impact on the game, which Chara reminds the Player of what they have done.
- Possession: Frisk is depicted near the conclusion of the Soulless Pacifist Route with red eyes, rosy cheeks, and a smile, suggesting Chara had possessed them at that precise moment due to the Player/Frisk selling their SOUL to Chara. If this is true, it can be said that Chara can only take control of someone if they have access to their SOUL, and possibly if said SOUL has high Determination.
- Frisk’s Abilities: Given that Chara can probably possess Frisk, it stands to reason that they would have Frisk's skills and arsenal.
- Determination: Because Chara claims that the Player’s (through Frisk, or just Frisk themself) "human soul" and "Determination" were theirs and not Chara’s (and that the Player/Frisk's power resurrected them), Chara has Determination; the ability to alter the timeline, and the potential to resurrect themselves. While they don’t directly do it, it’s implied they can from the said information and could potentially do it while possessing Frisk.
- Transmutation: Chara can manipulate events in the timeline with Determination (e.g., SAV(E)ing).
- Frisk’s Abilities: Given that Chara can probably possess Frisk, it stands to reason that they would have Frisk's skills and arsenal.
- Face Manipulation: As explained, Chara can manipulate their eyes and mouth.
- Knifemanship: With the "Real Knife/Worn Dagger" and "The Locket/Heart Locket" having some relation to Chara, it is indicated that Chara may have a connection with knives (and even asking "Where are the knives?" in New Home in the Genocide Route). Each fallen human also has a weapon and piece of armor that represents them. Additionally, Chara destroys the world with an attack animation identical to the various knives and stick weapons used by Frisk.
- Concept Manipulation: When the Player/Frisk’s LOVE increases, Chara says they are the "feeling" in question.
Quotes[]
“ | You and I are not the same, are we? This SOUL resonates with a strange feeling. There is a reason you continue to recreate this world. There is a reason you continue to destroy it. You. You are wracked with a perverted sentimentality. I cannot understand these feelings any more. Despite this. I feel obligated to suggest. Should you choose to create this world once more. Another path would be better suited. | „ |
~ Chara if the player concluded a subsequent Genocide Route. |
“ | A cotton heart and a button eye. You are the apple of my eye. | „ |
~ The narrator, possibly Chara, upon checking the dummy. |
“ | But nobody came. | „ |
~ Chara when all of the monsters in a given area are slain. |
“ | YOU MADE YOUR CHOICE LONG AGO. | „ |
~ Chara telling the player that they already made their choice, if they choose not to erase the world at the end of the subsequent Genocide Route. |

Trivia[]
- Unlike other antagonists and villains in the Undertale series, Chara's motivations and personality are for the most part left entirely ambiguous and open to interpretation, and it's for that reason that their moral alignment has become one of the most heavily debated topics within the Undertale fandom. Some suggest that there are a tragic hero that genuinely had good intentions, perfectly capable of love and empathy. Others have argued they're a heartless psychopath who is sees everyone else as a mere tool for their own ends. Others have just suggested if they're an amoral force completely detached from concepts such as "good" and "evil," and more or less just a physical embodiment of the players desire for completion and "increasing numbers."
- Chara's color scheme for their clothes (cream and green) is a color negative of Frisk's (blue and purple).
- Chara's favourite food is chocolate; during the Genocide Route, inspecting the fridge in New Home will have Chara angrily comment on it not containing any.
- Toriel and Chara both greet new figures using "greetings" (Toriel to the protagonist at the beginning of the game, Chara to the protagonist at the end of the Genocide Route). It is likely Chara assimilated this behavior from Toriel.
- In the Japanese translation, Chara uses "watashi" and "jibun" for themself and refers to a person using "omae". Their speech is also written in "proper" Japanese, that is to say, it employs a standard level of kanji usage (Chinese characters), which puts it in stark contrast with the rest of the game, which hardly ever uses kanji in its text. This gives their speech an air of high formality.
- "Chara" is likely short for the word "character", as all internal references of either Frisk (mainchara) or Chara (truechara) use "chara".
- Chara notes that they were confused at first upon awakening, and the player taught them just how essential power is for success.
- This implies that on the Genocide route, the player is responsible for Chara's highly negative worldview.
- It is heavily implied that they are the narrator in both the Neutral and True Pacifist Route as well.
- Chara has several implicit connections with other characters:
- They seem to idolize Undyne, referring to her as a hero in all routes.
- This is particularly notable in the No Mercy Route, where they fall silent as she slowly melts.
- In one of Asgore's drawers in New Home, a knitted sweater can be found with the words "Mr. Dad Guy" on it. On the No Mercy Route, Chara remarks, "Still has that sweater", which implies they are the one who knitted it.
- They know that Asriel's revived form is named "The Absolute GOD of Hyperdeath!" and has specially named attacks, implying that this is a character he created and told Chara about.
- The battles against Toriel, Asriel, and Asgore are the only ones other than Undyne's where Chara will fall completely silent.
- They make a special note of Snowdrake on the No Mercy Route. If Snowdrake isn't killed when you arrive in Snowdin while the kill count isn't completed yet, the message "That comedian..." will appear on the save points and will be replaced with "The comedian got away. Failure." if you complete the Snowdin's kill count without killing Snowdrake.
- They seem to idolize Undyne, referring to her as a hero in all routes.
- Some fans speculated the song that plays during the Sans battle, "MEGALOVANIA", could be Chara's theme as the word comes from "Megalomaniac", which means having the obsession over power to one self, which fits with the Genocide Route version of Chara.
- Also, "Susie", "Vs. Susie" and "Vs. Lancer" shares similar components with each other with name titling being based upon the character, leitmotifs, instruments and how "Vs. Susie" was playing when Susie as the main focus was fighting Lancer. Which some fans had added as a reason since it would basically be like when Chara is fighting Sans and Chara is fighting Sans.
- If the player decides to laugh at Snowdrake's mother, the narrator, possibly Chara, starts on a somewhat cruel and pointed act about laughing until you cry, ending with "What, you didn't do that?" and note that it isn't funny if you laugh again. It's possible that this implies that laughing in stressful situations was a coping mechanism while they were alive.
- Many details throughout the game imply Chara possibly struggled with self-harm and even suicidal urges:
- Toriel's gardening tools are blunted and her fire is not hot enough to burn. She also hides her knives.
- The text they give for the faded ribbon is "If you're cuter, monsters won't hit you as hard.". This might imply that Chara was abused in the past.
- Dialogue from Asriel after his battle notes that Chara climbed the mountain for a reason that "wasn't very happy."
- Chara seems to read quite a bit, as evidenced by their expansive vocabulary and a word-for-word quotation from Banana Yoshimoto's Kitchen in the No Mercy Route.
- They seem to enjoy learning in general, such as when they get very excited to learn that Toriel owns a "water sausage", which they did not know the name of until reading it in a book in-game.
- After the "Soulless Pacifist Route", Chara reminds the player of what they did in the Genocide Route by either showing that they can take control of Frisk at any time or changing the end photo to have all main characters' faces drawn out and Frisk replaced with Chara, essentially ruining the good ending for the player.
- The "I have places to go" end may imply that Chara killed all of the main characters.
- "The End" text is also colored in red, with a slowed down version of "Anticipation" playing in the ending. The Annoying Dog does not show up to sleep under the text. It is speculated that it was presumably killed by Chara.
- Chara is the only character in Undertale whose dialogue is not accompanied by voice bytes.
- Chara is heavily associated with the number nine, with their stats being maxed out to "99" at the end of a Genocide Route and their final attacks consisting of nothing but nines.
- According to a letter attached to the 9th Anniversary Newsletter, nine is Chara's favorite number, with it being the highest digit being the main factor. According to Asriel, "If everything gets high enough, you become invincible. Nothing can hurt you anymore. Nothing can hurt anyone anymore." This heavily implies that Chara’s fascination with the number 9, and their desire for power (at least when they were alive) is linked to the trauma and pain they endured on the surface. It also implies that since Chara says “nothing can hurt anyone anymore” they wanted power for reasons that weren’t purely selfish.
