~ Charles Lovely |
Charles Lovely is the main antagonist of Season 4 the Netflix original series, Paradise P.D. He is a multi-millionaire plutocrat, who serves as the founder and currently acting CEO of Lovely Corp. He is an extremely weird person, who doesn't act like a regular human being and possesses strange abilities that suggest that he's either of celestial, supernatural, or in any other way, fantastic persuasion.
Charles Lovely's overall arc is carrying out an ultimate evil plan known as "The Eternal Reckoning", wherein he'll kidnap the immortal baby, Kevin Crawford and consume his soul, giving himself eternal life. Currently, Charles maintains his immortality by harvesting the life sources of other people younger than himself, mainly other babies and also his myriad of ex-wives.
He is voiced by Dana Snyder.
Biography[]
Charles Lovely debuted in the episode "The Brozone Lair", where he made a brief cameo, watching a story on the news that reported on the miracle baby, Kevin Crawford, (not to be confused with his older brother, Kevin, who had recently been renamed "AFKAK"), who apparently possesses immortality and invincibility.
Charles would later make his first official appearance in "Good Jeans", where he went down to Paradise to meet with Mayor Karen Crawford to talk about expanding his business of Lovely Corp into her town. Karen agreed to have Charles Lovely build the headquarters to his company in Paradise, desperately needing to profit off of his immense wealth to keep her impoverish city afloat.
After the construction of the new Lovely Corp Headquarters, Charles Lovely's sidekick, Thester Carbomb IV gave Karen and the Paradise Party Dudes a tour of the facility as well as giving them all free Lovely Phones, all of which took DNA samples of their owners, which they used to create genetic clones of them.
At the end of the day, Charles Lovely got to meet with The Crawford Family in person and was especially delighted to see Baby Kevin, who he presented with a gift, this being a stuffed bunny rabbit toy with his face on it. After this, Charles Lovely introduced everybody to his fiance, who turned out to be none other than Gina Jabowski, much to the horror and chagrin on AFKAK Crawford.
In "The Shartist", Charles Lovely had started to gentrify Paradise by building an art museum to bring culture to the city. Charles invited his fellow billionaire friends to the grand opening, which included such plutocrats as Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos. There, they discussed their last infant blood harvest.
At this time, AFKAK badgered Gina for answers about why she was suddenly going steady with Charles Lovely and Gina gave him some weird enigmatic answers that made her not seem like herself. Charles Lovely interrupted their conversation to tell AFKAK about how great of a guy he is and that he considers him to be one of his friends.
Later in the episode, AFKAK exposed Gina at a funeral, hoping to prove she was a clone that Charles Lovely made, only to find out that he was wrong and he just embarrassed himself, showing everyone the real Gina. This led to him getting arrested and thrown in jail, where he was approached by Charles Lovely, urging him to stay away from his fiance in the future. He also warned AFKAK that he's seen into his future and assured him that things don't turn out well for him.
In "The Butt Cut", Charles Lovely had a meeting with some supernatural entities on the ethereal plane and said that he's seen into the future and learned that one of his fellow bureaucrats is going to betray him. He trusted that Thester and Gina could never be said mole and tasked them with finding out who among them is planning to take him down.
It was eventually revealed that Randy Savage was the mole, as he traded secret intel about The Eternal Reckoning with AFKAK. However, Thester falsely accused Gary of being the mole, leading to Charles Lovely exterminating Gary by crushing him to death under a clown car.
At the end of the episode, Charles decided that because AFKAK knows too much, he needed to be dealt with but knew that killing him would be too risky as he's the son of his greatest ally, Karen Crawford, who he needs to maintain his trust with. As such, Charles simply bought the city of Paradise from Karen for $10,000,000, legally making himself the new mayor, and banned AFKAK from Paradise and kicked him out of the town, entirely, which Karen was perfectly okay with.
In "Boat!", AFKAK was completely banned from Paradise and Charles Lovely had built a borderwall and a moat around the city to ensure he'd never enter. Outside of town, AFKAK discovered a group of vigilantes called "The Resistance", composed of several other people who had been wronged by Charles Lovely in the past and were assembled to take down his company once and for all.
In "King of the Norf", Charles Lovely had announced to the city that he was marrying his fiance, Gina Jabowski. Now that AFKAK knew the love of his life would be marrying another, especially someone so sick and twisted as Charles Lovely, things got personal and he needed to stop the wedding.
AFKAK first did some research on Charles Lovely's past and found that he had been married 5 times before, all to women who were far younger than him and all who bore resemblance to Gina. Further research revealed that all of his past wives were currently deceased, which seemed extremely suspicious and made AFKAK worry that marrying Charles would lead to Gina's fate as well. Baby Kevin came in to help AFKAK with his research and pointed out that all of the women in the pictures were wearing the same heart locket, which he deduces Charles Lovely was using to brainwash Gina into loving him.
The Resistance had plans to infiltrate Lovely Corp, while Charles and his minions were all busy at the wedding but AFKAK had to sabotage their break in by snitching on them, distracting the minions from the wedding so that he could infiltrate it. AFKAK broke into the Lovely-Jabowski wedding and loudly announced that he'd be exposing Charles Lovely as a brainwashing fraud and then ripped Gina's necklace off and destroyed it, only for Gina to remain the same person, afterwards, disproving his theory about the brainwashing locket. AFKAK got his ass kicked by Gina for this and the wedding continued on.
At the end of "Sack to the Future", the entire city of Paradise was sent skyrocketing into the air with rocket boosters, installed by Charles Lovely. Charles Lovely sent up a giant hologram from the roof of the Lovely Corp HQ, announcing that his ultimate evil plan "The Eternal Reckoning" had begun.
Charles' final appearance was in "The Eternal Reckoning", where the eponymous plan was carried out. Charles Lovely summoned all of the products from his company to go rogue on their owners and attack them, while the Snuggle Me Lovely doll he gave to Baby Kevin went rogue as well, kidnapped him, and flew him up to the roof of Lovely Corp. The party dudes fought off the products and infiltrated the Lovely Corp HQ to get Baby Kevin back from Charles Lovely.
Atop the roof of Lovely Corp, Charles Lovely had Baby Kevin gagged and bound on a crystalized chair and surrounded by his fellow plutocrats, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson, and Michael Lindell. Charles Lovely explained to the party dudes what his plan, "The Eternal Reckoning" was all along; Charles Lovely is an immortality seeker, who feasts on the souls of those younger than him to obtain their unlived years in life and make himself live forever. When he heard about the immortal Baby Kevin on the news, he knew that this kid was the jackpot and with his soul alone, he could achieve his goal of immortality.
The planets aligned above Baby Kevin and Charles gathered around the kid with the other plutocrats and they all used their ethereal powers on him to consume his soul and spread his eternal life source among themselves. However, their plans were thwarted when Gina kicked Charles Lovely in the head and held him at gunpoint, proving that she was on the good guys' side the entire time. As she clarified, she was going undercover and getting close to Charles Lovely to stop his plan and the whole time, she was really working for The Strawberry Action Squad.
The rest of The Strawberry Action Squad showed up on the scene and fought with the other plutocrats, ending with AFKAK (Now renamed back to "Kevin") and Gina punching him out. While Kevin and Gina reunited, Charles Lovely managed to sneak off and escape with Baby Kevin, flying away from them all in the hijacked Strawberry Action Squad helicopter. As everyone stood there, looking helpless, Randall Crawford had one last trick up his sleeve; singing "Pump Up the Jam", which proved completely ineffective.
Appearance[]
Charles Lovely is a tall, creepy, elderly man with extremely pale-white flesh, covered in wrinkles and sunspots. He has light gray hair worn in a slightly unkempt crew cut, which also has some silver streaks going along the front and sides. He has a long vertical face with a pointed chin, a long crooked nose, and extremely faint light-blue eyes that sit deep within his saturated and darkened sockets. He wears a buttoned up black business suit, matching work pants, black dress shoes, a white undershirt, and a gray tie with a yellow diamond symbol on it for some reason.
Personality[]
Charles Lovely is an extremely bizarre and creepy man, whose abnormal behavior makes him come off as deeply unsettling and even terrifying to others. Charles Lovely speaks in a weird, swirly voice that inconsistently shifts in pitch and sound. As he talks, he'll often times flinch and flail. Charles describes basic human functions in oddly scientific manner, as though the concept is completely foreign to him, (i.e. describing happiness as a "positive human emotion" and describing eating hamburgers as "consuming rotting cow flesh"), which makes it seem like he has disassociated himself with humanity as a whole. This kind of behavior not only leads some to question his mental sanity but also his legitimacy as a human being.
Powers/Abilities[]
- Clairvoyance - Charles Lovely supposedly has the ability to see into the future. He has demonstrated on numerous occasions that he has seen into the future and witnessed the apocalypse, as well as the fates of everyone he knows. In "Good Jeans", he predicted that Karen Crawford would die on June 24th, 2042. In "The Shartist", Charles told AFKAK that he foresaw his ultimate fate in life and although he didn't go into detail, he claimed that "things don't end well for [him]". In "The Butt Cut", Charles predicted that one of his high employees would betray him, thanks to contacting the spirits of the ethereal plane. In "The Eternal Reckoning", Charles mentioned that he knew how the world was going to end but nobody seemed interested in hearing it.
- Dream Inception - Charles Lovely has the ability to insert himself into people's dreams, even if he'd never met said person before. In "Good Jeans", Thester claimed that Charles had been appearing in his nightmares ever since he was 3, which was long before he even first met him in real life.
- Emotional Vampirism - Thester said in "Good Jeans", that he assumes Charles Lovely feeds off the negative emotions of others as a substitute for eating actual food. However, this remains ambiguous as in "The Shartist", Charles stated how he ate some cheeseburgers with Randall.
- Ethereal Manipulation - Charles Lovely has the ability to transport his consciousness to the ethereal plane, where he communicates with supernatural cosmic entities. Apparently, the cosmic entities dispense to him cryptic information about the future, which is why he's so clairvoyant. This was exhibited in "The Butt Cut", where he had a conference call with the ethereal deities and learned that someone at his company would betray him. In "The Eternal Reckoning", Charles Lovely, along with the other CEOs, used ethereal powers on Baby Kevin in an attempt to consume his soul. His powers were shown to be fueled by celestial energy, when he required the planets of the galaxy to align above him in order for The Eternal Reckoning to work.
- Immortality - Although he doesn't possess eternal life just yet, Charles Lovely has been able to extend his life by consuming the souls of those younger than him. Although it's unknown exactly how long he's been alive for, we know that currently he has consumed the souls of five of his past wives, all of whom were significantly young. His overarching goal in Season 4 was to do this same thing to Baby Kevin, which would have given him immortality. This process was shown as him summoning ethereal powers from the aligned planets of the galaxy above and using it to remove Baby Kevin's life force and give it to himself. However, his plans were thwarted by Gina Jabowski, kicking him out and corrupting the process. Additionally, it's been hinted that Charles Lovely has, in fact, died before and later come back. In "Boat!", Charles describes the afterlife as "nothing but darkness", implying that he's been to the afterlife at least once.
- Mind-Breaking - Although this was never seen, it was mentioned in "Good Jeans" that Charles has the ability to make people go insane for a week just by looking them in the eyes for more than 5 seconds. However, it doesn't necessarily have to be the same week they made eye contact with him. Victims are just destined to have a week-long mental breakdown at any random point in the future.
- Necro-Organikóskinesis - Charles Lovely has a botanical variant of this, as seen in "A Star is Porn", when one of Karen's desk plants immediately wilted, rotted, and died as soon as Charles entered the room. This suggests that Charles Lovely emits some kind of invisible force field of death that can kill any plant that comes within a predetermined radius of him.
- Soul Absorption - Charles Lovely maintains his potentially eternal lifespan by using his ethereal powers to consume other people's life forces and transfer them over to himself. By doing this, Charles kills the person, whose soul he steals. In "King of the Norf", it was revealed that he had done this to five young women in the past, all of whom were his wives. In "The Eternal Reckoning", Charles attempted to do this same thing on Baby Kevin before the process was corrupted by Gina.
- Telekinesis - While it remains uncertain whether or not Charles Lovely has can directly read people's minds, it has been demonstrated that he can extrapolate information about a person without them even telling him. In "Good Jeans", Charles accurately deduced Karen Crawford's blood type, birthday, and future death date just by sitting next to her.
- Teleportation - Charles Lovely has a habit of randomly appearing in front of people without them seeing or hearing him come in, which is usually frighteningly jarring to them. He first did this in "A Star is Porn", making Karen shriek in terror and again in "Good Jeans", startling Thester into getting a mini-heart attack. It remains unclear how he manages to do this but it can be inferred that this comes from an ability to teleport.
- Temperature Manipulation - In "Good Jeans", Thester said that the temperature drops by 5 degrees, whenever Charles enters the room.
- Time Manipulation - It's heavily implied that Charles is some kind of a time lord, given various odd comments he's made about the concept of time. In "Good Jeans", Charles propagated the ideology that "time" is a meaningless social construct and that everyone is already dead, making an eerie suggestion that he doesn't even believe that time exists. In "The Shartist", Charles found it amusing that AFKAK perceived time in a line, which suggests that Charles sees the imaginary concept of "time" as being circular, rather than linear.
