She was played by Becky Hindley.

Biography[]

Background[]

Charlotte Hoyle worked at Weatherfield High with John Stape in 2007, until he was suspended for having an affair with pupil Rosie Webster. It was then Charlotte and her colleagues became aware of that when John was arrested for Rosie's kidnapping in 2008, although held nothing against John due to Rosie's bad reputation at the school and put it behind them after the initial gossiping about his actions.

2010[]

Charlotte and other teachers attended the leaving party of colleague Colin Fishwick in April 2010. John and his wife Fiz attended the party after being invited by Colin, and Charlotte enjoyed being reacquainted with John. Although John feared about his colleagues talking behind his back for his past actions, Charlotte assured him they had moved on and lacked sympathy for Rosie "Plebster"'s plight.

A couple of months later Charlotte happened to cross paths with John during a teaching conference, and was confused at how he managed to gain a teaching position despite being struck off for what happened with Rosie. She discovered he had stolen Colin's identity and masqueraded as him. Charlotte found the situation amusing, as she had previously thought of John as "boring" but this current situation excited her.

She became more active in John's life and constantly bothering him. Colin later returned to the United Kingdom and discovered what John had done. Colin confronted Charlotte and John in the latter's home and made threats to call the police, with Charlotte sticking up for John. Colin collapsed from injuries sustained after being beaten up by a man whose wife Colin had an affair with, and died instantly. Fearing he would go back to prison, John persuaded Charlotte to hide Colin's body in the demolished Underworld factory that was currently under reconstruction. Much to John's relief, the body wasn't discovered and the hole Colin was left in was cemented over, sealing him away.

Fiz got fed up with Charlotte's constant bothering of John (unaware of the real truth) so went round to her house and smashed up Charlotte's living room and threatened to assault a terrified Charlotte. Charlotte assured Fiz that she wouldn't bother John further.

Over the next few months Charlotte's mental health began to deteriorate, and she became fixated with John and wished to be with him. She began sending anomalous threatening letters claiming to know what happened to Colin. John initially suspected Charlotte of being the suspect, but she covered her tracks by showing forged letters to make out she was also being blackmailed by a "mysterious" individual. John eventually discovered the letters, but Charlotte blackmailed him to not report her due to her knowledge of Colin's body being under the factory. Charlotte proposed that John spends time with her as well as Fiz, and a reluctant John agreed as to not be exposed for his recent misdemeanours.

Charlotte invited John to meet her parents for dinner, and made him use the name Colin Fishwick as part of her deluded fantasy. Charlotte became dissatisfied with John spending a majority of his time with Fiz so proposed that he should leave Fiz for good and move in with her. John wasn't keen as he loved Fiz and kept fobbing Charlotte off, which irritated and made her even more erratic overtime. In December 2010 she confronted John in his home and realising he wouldn't leave Fiz for her, began to go insane and threatened John with a hammer. After disarming her, Charlotte made her way to the door threatening to tell Fiz the truth, causing a desperate John to snap and hit her with the hammer, rendering Charlotte unconscious.

Immediately following the attack a tram crashed off the viaduct down the street following an explosion at the bar underneath the tracks. John placed Charlotte's body on the site to make her look like a victim of the crash. When emergency services discovered Charlotte, John was stunned to find she was still alive. He went to see Charlotte in hospital (who was still unconscious and on life support) but her parents arrived before he could finish her off. He kept up the act as her boyfriend, and all three were informed by the medical staff that Charlotte was braindead and the best solution was to turn off her life support. John agreed to this, and watched as it was turned off and she passed away.
