Logan: Ah sh*t man, I can't believe we made it! At this point, I'll be goddamn glad to have all my old problems back, as long as the world is the way it used to be.

Charon: It's not, and never will be. Trust me.

~ Charon's closing line after escaping Banoi, hinting his plans are far from over.
On you, poor wretches, Charon will expend his breath, baring his napless coat. For I am the Ferrymen of Ghosts, and I am now at my oar.
~ Charon in his first audio log.

Kevin Barrister, also known as Charon, is the overarching antagonist in the Dead Island franchise.

He has been voiced by Zach Hanks in Dead Island, Dead Island: Ryder White's Campaign, and Dead Island: Riptide. He was voiced by Erik Meyers in Escape Dead Island.

Biography[]

Past[]

When Kevin Barrister was young and living in San Francisco, he looked up to his father Chase who was the co-founder of the company GeoPharm along with Ronald Crown, who created the company in an attempt to create cures for diseases. GeoPharm eventually expanded all around the world including Banoi where Chase would discover an enzyme called the Hewitt Kahn enzyme accelerator (HKEA) which he believed could be helpful in curing viruses, though at the moment it was unstable and cancerous.

Ronald's son Emory Crown who was a member of Palm Garden Order eventually found out about HKEA and took a great interest to it. After an experiment resulted in the excruciating death of a test subject, Emory saw the chance to profit from HKEA and kidnapped Chase, who forced him to sign over ownership of the company to him, and then murdered him.

The PGO with their partners known as the Consortium led by Frank Serpo began to use GeoPharm as a means to create chemical weapons, destroying Chase's legacy. After this, Kevin would vow vengeance for his father's death and take on the moniker of Charon and would use his hacking abilities to work with terrorists and gangsters all around the globe to make himself infamous and fund his mission to avenge his father.

Sometime later he began working with Dr. Robert West, who worked for GeoPharm, to make a zombie virus by mutating the blood from Kuru infected natives led by Koritoia Ope, which normally takes years to turn them into the undead into just a few hours, with Yerema being an asymptomatic carrier of the super-virus.

Kevin then later allowed himself to be arrested and was sent to the Banoi Maximum Security Prison along with all of the most highly dangerous gangsters, hitmen, and serial killers in the world. From here, after a riot where all of the guards were either killed or turned into The Infected, Charon took control of the security system and used his hacking abilities to watch whatever he wants on the main island of Banoi as it goes down.

Dead Island[]

The player first hears from Charon inside of an elevator inside the Royal Palms Resort, where he impersonates Australian Colonel Ryder White to gain their trust, and asks them if they've been infected by any zombies and they confirm to him they haven't. Charon then tells them they have to find a weapon to defend themselves and leave the hotel as quickly as possible.

However, the player is ambushed by The Infected who chase them into a stairwell and are knocked unconscious by a zombie and then bitten, but are luckily saved by John Sinamoi and are taken back to a hut on the beach in the resorts. After waking up, Charon contacts them again on a radio and after Sinamoi confirms his beliefs to him that they are all somehow immune to the virus (in actuality they are all asymptomatic much like Yerema), he tells them that they must find a way to get to him on the prison island in order to leave Banoi and then loses his signal with them due to an incoming monsoon.

Later on, after Yerema has been taken to the science lab in the jungles of Banoi with Dr. West, Charon once again imitates Colonel White to tell the heroes to hurry to the labs after they finish what they believe is an antidote to the virus, after Dr. West once again tries taking another sample of Yerema's infected blood to make a vaccine. Yerema however locks herself inside of a cell and Charon uses his hacking abilities to release the caged infected at the labs to kill most of the scientists there. The heroes collect the now finished "antidote" and with the help of a former inmate of the prison named Mowen, they manage to get to the island where Charon is being held.

While the player is on a mission to help obtain guns and ammo for the prisoners, they finally meet Charon face to face, who lets them believe he's just another prisoner that helps them into the armory. After the heroes guard him from The Infected while he unlocks the doors to cell block C by getting him a master keycard, he warns them that they shouldn't be helping the prisoners since they're dangerous and instead leave the island with the helicopter Ryder White is planning on using to help himself and his wife escape Banoi. After the heroes, Yerema, and Jin are knocked unconscious once again with knockout gas in an elevator, Kevin wakes them up and tells them that Ryder stole the antidote to betray them, whom they believed was actually The Voice this entire time.

After a long fight with Ryder's fellow soldiers, they corner him on the roof and Jin releases his infected wife Emily to avenge her infected father, and Emily bites Ryder on his arm. Ryder shoots Jin to death in retaliation for ruining all of his efforts to save her and injects himself with what he also believes in an antidote to the virus, but it instead mutates his body even faster than regular zombies into a combination of both a Thug and The Infected. The Heroes put down the zombified Ryder and are then flown off Banoi in the helicopter by Charon who tells them things will never go back to normal. Unbeknownst to them, he plans on somehow using Yerema to spread the zombie virus once again.

Dead Island: Ryder White's Campaign[]

After Ryder White's helicopter is shot down over the city of Moresby by a group of bandits, he is the only survivor of the crash. Ryder however completes his mission in destroying a bridge in an attempt in slowing down the infection. On another helicopter ride to pick up his wife Emily however, she tells him over the radio that an infected inmate at the maximum security prison has bitten her and she begs him to leave the island without her. However, Ryder's stubbornness does not allow him to, and he orders the helicopter to fly to the prison so that he may try and save her.

Once on the island, Ryder meets with Kevin Barrister and discovers that he's actually Charon, the infamous hacker and terrorist. Charon tells him that if he wants any chance in saving his wife, Ryder has to do everything Charon tells him to do. First, Ryder turns on the emergency power generator so that Charon is able to monitor all of the security cameras in the prison. After obtaining an antibiotic known as Tetracycline, Charon informs him that four "guests" are coming to the island with the cure for his wife and the antibiotic will only slow down Emily's infection.

Then, Charon instructs Ryder to clear the showers in Cell Block C that is infested with zombies so that the four heroes will able able to make it to the elevator without issue. After returning to the control room, Ryder overhears Charon imitating him while talking to the four protagonists and threatens to kill him for not only endangering Emily, but forcing him to betray his country, though Charon is able to convince him that they would never listen to him if they had known they were speaking to a prisoner of one of the highest security prisons on Earth.

Charon then instructs Ryder to collect knockout gas and place it above the elevator the four heroes, Yerema, and Jin would use to get to the roof and not have to bother negotiating with them for "the cure". After returning to the control room however, Ryder destroys all of Charon's computers and takes the cure from him, then locks him inside to try and prevent Charon from stopping him. However, Charon has a keycard hidden away and is able to make it to the elevator and wake everyone up to convince them that it was actually Ryder who stole the cure and is not only planning on escaping Banoi with it and his wife, but is also going to have the entire island nuked if he isn't killed in time.

After the four heroes kill Ryder, it's revealed to the player that Charon was speaking to them for the entirety of Dead Island and plans on using Yerema to spread the virus once more.

Dead Island Riptide[]

After Charon, the four heroes, and Yerema are arrested by the Australian military once their helicopter runs out of fuel onto their battleship, Kevin is never seen or heard from again in Riptide. According to Purna's retelling of the events of Dead Island, none of them are aware of how they were all fooled by Charon. After the arrest, it's highly unlikely that Charon was sent to prison for his crimes since he was working with VIP Frank Serpo. It's unknown as to where he went after he managed to escape Banoi or what he's planning to do with the virus in the future.

Escape Dead Island[]

Charon never physically appears in Narapela, though Cliff Calo can find sixteen of Charon's audio logs scattered throughout the island. In them, Kevin expresses his extreme hatred for the Palm Garden Order, the group who killed his father and scared his mother into silence. Kevin further explains how the PGO and the Consortium took control over GeoPharm and used it to create chemical weapons, which he would later use with the help of Dr. Robert West to create the advanced version of the Kuru virus, only to later betray him.

Dead Island 2[]

Sometime after the events of Dead Island: Riptide, Charon was successfully able to spread the virus to California, although it's unknown if the virus will spread any further into the United States and Charon himself is never mentioned within the game. However, thanks to Tisha's immunity to the virus thanks to her adoptive father and potential to create more cures if she's ever found, it's possible that the infection could be eradicated sometime in the future which in turn would stop Charon's plans.

Trivia[]

  • Charon in Greek mythology is the ferrymen of the dead on the ferry called Hades, leading them across the river Styx. He even explains this namesake when he confirms that Ryder knows who he is.
  • Due to Charon impersonating Ryder White for the entire duration of Dead Island and Dead Island: Ryder White's Campaign, it's commonly believed by most players that whenever "The Voice" speaks to them, it's Ryder speaking. In actuality, the player never speaks to Ryder himself until the very end of the first game when they meet in person on top of the prison.
  • According to the Dead Island novelization, written by Mark Morris, the population of the Banoi Archipelago is about 133,000 people, and the virus affected 80,000 of them. This means Charon is responsible for at least 60% of all the initial deaths on Banoi, Palanai, and Narapela, as well as any that occurred after the islands were abandoned.
