Chato is the secondary antagonist in the 2014 film The Book of Life. He is a bandit and Chakal's second-in-command who helps him in finding the Medal of Everlasting Life, so he could make Chakal immortal. He is the only bandito (besides Chakal) that talks throughout the entire film.
He was voiced by Eugenio Derbez, who later played Alejandro Gutierrez in Dora and the Lost City of Gold.
Biography[]
Chato was first seen when he and the Banditos invaded the town of San Ángel and started going over a list of Chakal's demands. He then threatened to burn the town. Chato and the rest of the bandits are about to battle Manolo when they are interrupted by Joaquin Mondragon, who arrived to stop the Banditos' rampage.
Chato and the bandits laugh at Joaquin when he declares that San Ángel only to stop when he tells them "Prepare to be beaten." This provokes Chato to order Plomo to attack Joaquin only for the latter to grab him by the arm and fling him into Chato and the Banditos, knocking them down like bowling pins.
Frustrated, Chato orders the Banditos to attack all at once and were able to pin Joaquin to the ground. As the bandits beat him, they and Chato suddenly discover that Joaquin is wearing the Medal of Everlasting Life. Joaquin notices and knocks out all of the bandits back with a powerful uppercut. After being beaten by the town hero, Chato gives Joaquin an "I'm watching you" kind of look, before ordering the banditos to fall back and they proceeded to flee from San Ángel.
Chato later rushes into Chakal's cave, where he relays to Chakal that they found the Medal of Everlasting Life in the town of San Angel only for an angry Chakal to pounce on him, He demands if he was certain about it, and Chato replied that it was for sure and pointed to a drawing of it on the wall as confirmation. Chakal then orders Chato to gather their men so they can head for San Angel before kicking him out of his cave.
As Chato and rest of the bandits make their way to San Angel, they encounter Manolo's father, Carlos, who wanted to hold them back when he asks who wants to go next. Chato and the other bandits then make way for Chakal, who kills the bull fighter in no time. He, along with Chakal and the rest of the bandits, finally make it to San Angel. Chato was seen with all the other bandits as they all watched Chakal fight Joaquin but he was able to knock the medal off of Joaquin and after he sends the town hero flying in the air, Chato and the bandits all laugh at the failed hero.
He and some of the bandits take Maria prisoner as Chakal take possession of the Medal of Everlasting Life, when suddenly Manolo returned to the living. He and everyone else were then knocked back. Chato was seen laughing with the bandits, thinking Manolo had no army, but then all of Manolo's dead family members showed up and Chakal and his army were silent. Chato participated during the battle against the people of San Ángel, Chato managed to find the Medal only to be met by Chuy and the other farm animals (with the children of the town riding on their backs), making him quote "Kids?!" before all of the animals rammed Chato, causing him to lose the medal.
After Chakal was defeated by Manolo, Chato is last seen frighteningly declaring to the Banditos that Chakal has been defeated before ordering them to retreat. He then runs away with the whole army. It is unknown what became of him and the rest of the bandits after Chakal's death.

Trivia[]
- Though Chato is Chakal's second-in-command and right-hand man, he is unsurprisingly the least wanted bandito unlike his fellow bandits, as his bounty is only at $2.00.
