Chelonia is a fictitious religion and religious cult featured in Red Dead Redemption II.
They appear as major antagonists during the mission ''We Loved Once and True III'' during Arthur's part of the story and as strangers in their random event during John's part of the story.
Biography[]
Background[]
The cult was founded in the late 1700s in Boston and are led by Anders Helgerson at least between 1899 and 1907. Sill headquartered in Boston, they also established themselves in the states of New Hanover and Ambarino, particularly active in Cumberland Forest and Grizzlies East regions. They actively recruited young and able men in the area, something that made them particularly unpopular in these states.
Red Dead Redemption II[]
Arthur Morgan's ex-lover, Mary Linton, is worried at her brother Jamie joining the cult, knowing perfectly that they are "mad" and that it can't end well for Jamie. She in turns writes to Arthur, whom she hadn't seen in years, asking him to meet her north of Valentine to talk. Arthur arrives to the rendez-vous point and Mary explains the situation. Arthur can choose to help or reject her, but if he does help her, he will ride to their camp in Grizzlies East, but has to face the Chelonian Master and other members. The Master will then question Arthur, who can either answer politely or in a hostile way. If answered politely, the Master will allow Jamie to speak with Arthur. If answered hostilely, the Master won't accept Arthur's request and ends up being throttled by Morgan. After a pursuit, Arthur and Jamie reunites and Morgan convinces the young man to leave Chelonia.
Furthermore, Anders Helgerson can be encountered in Saint Denis, seen handing out pamphlets and sharing information about Chelonianism to passers-by. The player can accept or decline the pamphlet. If encountered during the epilogue, he will inform the player that "the end of the world is coming" and that a new Chelonian Master will initiate a rite within the near future, on the very same hilltop where Arthur confronted Jamie. If John travels to their camp, he will find numerous inducted members dressed in turtle's (the cult's sacred animal) that starts to sing before eventually jumping off the cliff to their deaths, making their journey to Chelonia.
