No matter how many trials I face or how much I get hurt... my Reason will not change.
~ Chiaki to Gozu-Tennoh.
You're so weak, yet you struggle so hard to live. Dreaming the dream of power... That's your sin.
~ Chiaki to Futomimi at Mifuashiro.

Chiaki Tachibana is a major antagonist in Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne. She is the childhood friend of the protagonist and fellow classmate of Isamu Nitta. After the Conception arrived and destroyed the world, she became reason holder of the Yosuga reason (a world that is based on strength, where the strong rule over the weak) and strives to rebuild the world to it. Her demonic sponsor is the god Baal, a Caanite and Semitic deity who later became a false god in Abrahamic faiths. If the player chooses to follow her, the world will be rebuild in strength. Depending on the dialoge options and choices the player makes, she can either succeed in her goal or fail.

In Japanese, she was voiced by Nana Mizuki in the drama CD adaptation of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne and Reina Ueda in the game's HD remaster. In English, she was voiced by Carla Tassara in the game's HD remaster.

Personality[]

At the beginning of the game, Chiaki seemes to be a caring person. She was glad to see the protagonist alive after the Conception and went to search for Isamu and her teacher. Chiaki also showed interest in the occult magazine the protagonist found.

Despite this, it is later revealed that her goal is to create a world of Yosuga, as Chiaki hates the old world and belives that the previous world had too many unnecessary things, beliving that she was chosen for creating the new world. Traits that she retains from her older appearance is being quite intelligent and having a disliking to those she deems lazy.

After getting Gozu-Tennoh's strength, she killed all the manikins and showed deep hatred for them following being attacked by Sakahagi, just because they were weak and called them "mud dolls". Chiaki never showed any remorse or guilt for her actions later on.

Her obssesion with power was further shown at the Tower of Kagatuchi, where she battles the Demi-Fiend, even if he joins her, to prove his strength.

In the Yosuga ending, she states that she wasn't the one with the tasked to create the universe, but to find someone to do it for her. She also seemed to be thankful that the protagonist choose her path.

Biography[]

At the begininng of the game, Chiaki went to visit her teacher at the hospital with Isamu and the protagonist. While the protagonist was searching for Isamu, she was reading an occult magazine that she borrowed from the protagonist, and after the protagonist came back, she suspected that the hospital was under influence of a cult. She sends the protagonist to the basement of the hospital to look for their teacher. After the resulting encounter with Hikawa, the Conception arrives and destroyed the world.

The first time after the Conception we see her is in Club Inferno, where she tells the protagonist that she is glad to see him and that she is going to search for their teacher and Isamu.

Chiaki can later be encountered in the Mantra's headquarters, where she explains to the Demi-Fiend that she wants to gather Magatsuchi to create the world of Yosuga, a world ruled by the strong. This is also the first chance the player gets to flag her reason.

She later searched for the Yahirino Himorogi (a stone that holds a lot of Magatsuchi) in Yoyogi Park, but when she arrived there, she was found by Sakahagi, with Chiaki losing her arm in the resulting clash.

At the Mantra's headquaters, she asks Gozu-Tennoh to lend her his strength so she can create the world of Yosuga. Gozu-Tennoh agrees and after absorbing his power, she is turned into a Pseudo-Fiend.

After obtaining power, she heads to Mifunashiro, where she slaughtered all the manikins there to gather their Magatsuchi in order to summon her demonic sponsor. The protagonist meets her at the end of the dungeon, where the manikin Futomimi tries to stop her. Here, the protagonist has his second flag, which will result into the Yosuga ending. If the player chooses not to side with her, she will summon Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel. However if he sides with her, he will have to fight Futomimi. Whatever the player chooses, Chiaki will kill Futomimi and summon the Baal Avatar.

After the protagonist opens the Tower of Kagatuchi, Chiaki enters as well. No matter what choices the player made, he will have to fight Chiaki and the Baal Avatar, with the only difference being the dialouge with Chiaki. If the player didn't choose the Yosuga route, they will fight as enemies, but if the player chooses the Yosuga route, they will fight as friends. Regardless of what ending the player picks, she will die after the battle is over.

In the Yosuga ending, Chiaki's ghost appears, thanking the protagonist for choosing the path of Yosuga and tell him that she can finaly find her rest.

In the Freedom ending, the world is restored to how it originaly was, as she meets with the protagonist and Isamu to visit her teacher at the hosptial.
