Chiang-Wah, also known as Chiang-Wah the Fierce, is a character in the 2009 historical fiction novel Red Lotus (first published in the US as The Concubine's Daughter). He is mentioned as a background influence in both parts of the novel, but only appears briefly towards the end of Part One: Children of the Moon.
Biography[]
Part One: Children of the Moon[]
Before the start of the story, in order to end a generational blood feud between his family and the Yellow Dragon triad in Shanghai, Benjamin Jean-Paul "Ben" Devereaux challenged the triad's senior boxer Chiang-Wah to a duel and won, thus officially ending the feud. This greatly hurt Chiang-Wah's pride, leading him to seek revenge. He attempted to burn Ben's ship the Golden Sky, but was caught in time; the attempt scarred his face and cost him an eye. In the present day, after being paid off by Ben's housekeepers, he takes part in a coordinated attack on Ben's family. While Ben is kept away from his house, Chiang-Wah infiltrates it, then rapes a pregnant Li-Xia and disfigures her face, driving her to commit suicide after sending her and Ben's newborn daughter to safety.
Part Two: Red Lotus[]
Chiang-Wah is confirmed dead by Yellow Dragon head Jack Teagarden "J. T." Ching. Ben mentions that he has shot him dead off-page to avenge Li-Xia.
Personality[]
“ | They say he can split the planks of a sampan or crack a stone water jar by charging it like a bull. Perhaps it is this part of his training that makes him such a dangerous maniac. | „ |
~ Ben Devereaux |
Chiang-Wah, who is a senior boxer for a triad, is said to be a dangerous and thuggish fighter. He refuses to accept his defeat at the hands of Ben, as it affects his pride and his standing amongst his triad, and holds a grudge against Ben. His hatred of Ben extends to the latter's wife Li-Xia, driving him to savagely assault her.
