~ Chief Schmohawk
Chief Shmohawk

Chief Schmohawk is a one-time villain from the Famous Studios animated series, Popeye the Sailor Man, only appearing in the episode "Wigwam Whoopee". He is an Indian chief who fought with John Smith (portrayed by Popeye) over the heart of "Pocahontas" (portrayed by Olive Oyl).

Biography[]

In "Wigwam Whoopee", Chief Schmohawk sat outside his tent and smoked some peace pipe, while he dreamt about how much he loved Pocahontas. Then, he spotted John Smith with Pocahontas and got ready to attack him. He went over to him with his little Indian boy by his side and took out a golf club and was about ready to smack John Smith on the head but then Pocahontas came up and introduced John Smith to him, saying that this was her new boyfriend. Chief Schmohawk felt obligated to pretend to be his friend and then shook his hand, only to pick him up and slam him on the ground, turning him into a giant can of spinach. John Smith came out of his own can and then threw Chief Schmohawk, turning him into a giant turkey, much to the latter's humiliation. Chief Schmohawk then turned really devilish and decided to throw a little "ceremony" for John Smith, where he had him carry a little maypole while the other Indians danced around it to some music. Chief Schmohawk winked at his drum circle players, indicating that he wanted them to speed up the tempo. When he did, the dancers sped up and tied John Smith up in the streamers, strapping him to the maypole. Chief Schmohawk poured a ring of gasoline around John Smith's maypole and lit it on fire. It was at this point, John Smith knew he was being fooled and was about to get burnt at the stake. Pocahontas saw what was happening and tried to save John Smith by putting out the fire but Chief Schmohawk just captured her and tried to lure her back to his teepee for some tea. Pocahontas refused but Chief Schmohawk didn't stop trying to kiss her. Pocahontas ran away and Chief Schmohawk chased after her. John Smith finally popped out a can of spinach cooked it up in the fire and then ate it, giving him the power to break out. Chief Schmohawk ordered his tribe to scalp him but then John Smith sent all his men flying with uppercuts, turning them all into coins with the marking of an Indian head. Chief Schmohawk had enough and then went right up to John Smith to fight him, himself. He rode a buffalo at a really fast speed and temporarily tuned into "The Chief" train. John Smith gave him one good punch, turning him into a giant Indian head gold piece with the buffalo on its flipside, and sent him into a coin slot, where a sign popped out, reading "No Sale". After defeating Chief Schmohawk, John Smith won the heart of Pocahontas and even became the new leader of the tribe.

Trivia[]

  • Chief Schmohawk is the third Indian Chief to appear in the series, with the first two being Big Cheese from "I Yam What I Yam" and Big Chief Ugh-Amugh-Ugh from the eponymous episode.
  • When charging at Popeye on his buffalo, Chief Schmohawk temporarily transformed into a train labeled "The Chief". This is a reference to the passenger train, The Chief, which transported passengers on the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway.
  • At the end of the episode, "John Smith" (Popeye) defeated Chief Schmohawk and became the new leader of the tribe. The Indians gathered around him and worshipped him, chanting the phrase "Salami, Salami, Bologna!". This exact ending gag was rehashed from the ending of the episode "Pop Pie a la Mode", when Popeye overthrew Joe as the leader of The Secret Order of the Midnight Well and was worshipped by a bunch of blackface cannibals, chanting "Salami, Salami, Bologna!"
    • "Salami, Salami, Bologna!" was also a repeated phrase, quoted by the Arabians in the episode "Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp".
  • Due to the stereotypical nature of Chief Schmohawk, the episode he comes from has been banned from broadcast syndication. However, the uncut episode can still be found intact on DVD.
