Chikara Kawabe is the deuteragonist of the Junji Ito short story Flesh-Colored Horror.

He is the son of Mrs. Kawabe who has a particularly eerie appearance and a violent demeanour, revealed over the course of the story to be the the result of particularly unusual and cruel experimentation he is subjected to on a daily basis.

Biography[]

As the son of Mrs. Kawabe, Chikara had been subjected to a horrible chemical reaction every night as part of his mother's efforts to recreate the skin-separating compound his deceased father had accidentally invented, even though he was scared to death by what he saw. As a result of this, Chikara looked very different compared to his peers at the Kindergarten he was enrolled at; he had an unnerving, ghostly complexion, no fingerprints on his hands, not an inch of hair on his head, and had murky, sullen eyes. He had also gained an unhealthy compulsion towards ripping things from having to have the chemical mixture torn off his body, including posters on the walls, and eventually the skin of one of his classmates, resulting in him getting expelled, though his teacher, Momoko Takigawa, began taking matters into her own hands to find out why he was this way.

Shortly before being abducted by Mrs. Kawabe, Takigawa learned from Chikara's aunt, Maya, that his condition was as a result of the chemical experimentation his mother was subjecting him to, with Maya being an unwilling participant. Even though it caused Chikara great pain by doing so, Maya had been sabotaging the chemical mixture so that it would not work as intended.

Chikara later came to the rescue of Maya and Takigawa by destroying his mother's skin suit with acid, then ripping her calf muscles in half when she tore off the skin of Maya's head. With Mrs. Kawabe's death assured, he stood over her and watched, having finally gotten the revenge he deserved.

Appearance[]

As a result of the repeated experiments conducted on him by his mother (with Maya as an unwilling assistant), whatever Chikara originally looked like is long gone, with his eerie and unnerving appearance being all that's left. Chikara has extremely pale, scaly skin and sunken eyes that are almost always set in a fearsome glare. Chikara also has no fingerprints on his hands, nor does he have any hair on his head.

Abilities[]

Despite his sickly appearance, Chikara is remarkably strong for a child his age, as shown when he was able to effortlessly tear the skin of one of his classmates, and when he bit through his mother’s leg muscles.
