The Children of Umbra are the secondary antagonists of the Umbra arc in Monica's Adventures.

They are the spirits of the seven kids from the Flying Donkey’s legend, cursed by the Donkey to haunt the woods of Sococó da Ema for mistreating the innocent Lake Girl. However, it turns out that the legend was modified by the townsfolk, as the seven children were actually the victims of both the Lake Girl and her mother, Berenice, also know as the Flying Donkey.

Biography[]

The True Victims[]

The Children of Umbra were a group of seven children from Sococó da Ema, a town in the countryside of the state of São Paulo. They often visited the home of a charitable woman named Berenice, who distributed sweets in plastic pots to the town’s needy. As she had a wooden winged horse in her yard, the children called her the Flying Donkey. However, the Berenice's daughter hated the other children because she believed that her mother paid more attention to them than to herself.

On October 31st 1994, while they were going to a Halloween party in the town center, the Flying Donkey's daughter took advantage of the moment to scare the group. She took a donkey skull that was nearby, placed two branches like a pair of horns and roared after the children. However, as the skull blocked her vision, she fell off from a cliff and drowned in the river below. Berenice, upon discovering her daughter's body, blamed the seven children for the tragedy and locked herself in the house for days, begging for a way to get revenge, until she was heard by the Serpent, an evil entity attracted by evil feelings.

The Light of the Innocent[]

Taking advantage of a desperate mother, the Serpent made a pact with Berenice to bring her daughter back to life in exchange for a favor that she would demand in the future. For the resurrection ritual to work, Berenice called the group of seven children one last time to eat sweets at her house, but this time she put sedatives in the food, which made the children fall soundly asleep. Therefore, she dressed them in the same costumes as they wore on Halloween and marked them with the Serpent Seal. One by one, Berenice placed the children in the Umbra through the Red Door in her house, being very careful not to cross it and be sent to hell.

After the last child was placed inside the Umbra, the spirit of the Lake Girl was released and all that was left to do was place the donkey's skull on her head for her to completely return to life. However, as the ritual only accepted bad spirits and the children were innocent, the light of their souls caused the entire house to blow up. Despite being protected in a magic circle, Berenice was unable to complete the ritual, as one of the children had taken the skull into the Umbra. Therefore, she left Sococó da Ema to find a way to bring her daughter back to life.

After the tragedy, the citizens of Sococó da Ema were left without understanding anything. As they did not find any bodies of the children who disappeared that night, they built a symbolic cemetery in the yard of Berenice's old house. To explain the inexplicable, the legend of the Flying Donkey was created, about a spirit of light and kindness that rewarded good children and took bad children away. The seven children became known as the Children of Umbra and, according to legend, they were evil spirits responsible for the death of the then good and innocent Lake Girl.

The Inevitable Evil[]

Two decades have passed since the incomplete ritual took place and the Children of Umbra still haunted the forests of Sococó da Ema, looking for a way to free himself from Berenice's curse. On Flying Donkey Day 2014, knowing that the Gang was going to the city to investigate the legend of the Flying Donkey, the Children of Umbra predicted that, due to Jimmy's curiosity and ambition, they could manipulate him into freeing them. On the second night that the Gang stayed at Berenice's cabin, the Children of Umbra tried to scare them into running away from Sococó, but that didn't work.

The next day, Berenice took the Gang to her old home, telling a distorted version of the legend to manipulate the Gang into helping her in her ritual. During the visit, the Spokesman possessed Maggy to use her powers of precognition and warn Jimmy that he was going to die soon - this made Jimmy more intrigued about the legend of the Donkey. After crossing the Red Door at the request of the Lake Girl, Jimmy was confronted again by the Children of Umbra, saying that they knew why he was in Umbra and that they would not let him leave with the donkey's skull to complete the ritual.

While Jimmy fled through the forest, the Children of Umbra lured him to their club, an illusion made by the Ballerina. There, they told the true legend of the Flying Donkey and saw in Jimmy's memories that Berenice was the one who was helping the Lake Girl. Convinced that the Children of Umbra were the real victims, Jimmy came up with a plan to help them defeat the duo, taking the donkey's skull from the Lady of the Boat and taking it outside of Umbra to use as bait. However, while Jimmy was talking to the Children of Umbra, Berenice trapped the spirits of Monica, Smudge and Maggy in magical masks, transforming them into the Guardians of the Threshold.

The Last Battle[]

After being defeated by the Guardians of the Threshold, the Children of Umbra retreated to Umbra, believing that the world was doomed once and for all. After Jimmy admitted his guilt for everything that was happening, the Children of Umbra returned and decided to help him defeat the Flying Donkey. Following Jimmy's plan, the Horse of Death was defeated and Berenice's curse was lifted, freeing the Children of Umbra after 20 years. Freed from the curse, the children returned to the same bodies they had 20 years ago and were finally reunited with their parents.

However, even with the curse lifted, the children retained their ghostly powers and, with the Spokesman possessing all the citizens at once, they took over Sococó da Ema.
