Children of the Forest (Russian: Дети Леса) are one of the factions that appear in the 2019 video game Metro Exodus. They appear as antagonists in the Taiga chapter.

The said faction is a splinter faction, which consists of two groups: Pioneers and Pirates, with the latter being more hostile to Artyom. The former, on the other hand, is player-determinant, as it will based on the player's actions throughout the level.

Biography[]

Overview[]

A group of children known as the Children of the Forest were left behind at a scout camp during World War III. They were raised by their camp master, whom they now refer to as "Teacher," who helped them acquire the survival skills needed to deal with whatever dangers the forest could pose. Be it shifting weather, dangerous animals, bandit assaults, or unwanted visitors.

After 2013, they established a tribe in post-apocalyptic Kazakhstan. Children of the Forest dress simply, like ancient nomadic tribes did, with materials gathered from nature. To make their adversaries fear them, the members of the cult wear masks constructed from mutants' skulls that cover their faces.

They tend to reside in forests and other secluded locations, as suggested by their name, distant from the metropolitan regions of humanity's previous grandeur that are now contaminated by radiation.

The Forest Court, which was created by the Children of the Forest, is primarily used to assess trespassers and strangers in order to decide whether or not they are hostile. While the hostile ones are either imprisoned or put to death, others who are not hostile are permitted to move around the area quietly.

The Children of the Forest split into the Pioneers and the Pirates, two subgroups with opposing perspectives on the Teacher's lessons, as the bandit raids grew more frequent and deadly over time. The Pioneers like to live in peace and seclusion, only killing bandits and allowing peaceful trespassers to pass.

On the other side, the Pirates repeatedly disregarded the Forest Court and actively attacked and looted strangers. Artyom has the chance to converse with some of the Children of the Forest, gaining moral points for his actions along the way.

Metro Exodus[]

The Children save both Artyom and Alyosha when their train derails as they are exploring the Valley. Alyosha is kidnapped by the Pioneers and put on trial, however he subsequently manages to escape, while Artyom is covertly saved by Olga. Artyom will be required to go through many camps that the Children have set up along the course of the level.

Choosing a stealthy approach and either only knocking them out or avoiding them completely will earn positive moral points. After Artyom's fight with the bear, Olga and a few other Children will confront Artyom and Alyosha. If Artyom showed restraint in dealing with the Children, they will simply see the pair off, while Alyosha warns Olga that the dam is about to burst and to evacuate the Valley with the rest of the Children.

However, Olga and the Children will be considerably more hostile and will expel Artyom and Alyosha from the Valley if Artyom was cruel. As the two are zipping away, they will also shoot at them, wounding Alyosha with an arrow.

If Artyom and the Children split up amicably, bandit radio communication that is subsequently heard onboard the Aurora proves that the Children really did leave the Valley.
