“ | Odd animals that have never been seen before now lurk in our forests, and giant balloon-like objects soar our skies! What's going on?! What's happening to the world we live in?! | „ |
~ Fassad addresses the Chimeras in his speech. |
Chimeras are the secondary antagonists of the Mother 3 video game. They are prominent enemies throughout each chapter, and with time even the Pigmask commanders end up becoming chimeras over the course of the story. In the Mother Series, chimeras show up as early as in EarthBound.
Behaviour[]
Chimeras vary greatly in behaviour. Certain chimeras like the Dryer Chimera, and Pump Chimera are completely docile, while many, many others are extremely hostile. Some, like the Mecha-Drago, are relentlessly hostile and willing to kill nearly anything on sight. Most chimeras are animals, however there are very few exceptions in which humans have become chimeras. Chimeras are still alive, and possibly living in constant pain however unlike most of the peaceful animals in Nowhere Islands, chimeras will often attack people without a second thought.
Biography[]
Earthbound[]
In EarthBound, Dr. Andonuts begins practicing with chimeras by allowing Dungeon Man to become a walking dungeon. The experiment is a near success, the latter however latter getting stuck in some palm trees not long after.
Mother 3[]
Chapter 1[]
Porky Minch steals Dr. Andonuts for his own plans at some point, and begins to start treating the chimera project as a playful matter. He forces Andonuts to transform forest creatures into chimeras. These chimeras are then used to invade the Sunshine Forest alongside the Pigmasks, as the Pigmasks set the forest on fire chimeras infest the place making it difficult for anyone to make it out. Lighter struggles to fight off the chimeras, requiring Flint to pitch in and help save Lighter's son, Fuel. After defeating a Flying Mouse holding Fuel captive in the burning house, a rain puts the fire out and the attack of the chimeras seemingly stops then.
Yet, when the villagers search for Hinawa and the twins, two Pigmasks spark up a Reconstructed Caribou to attack Flint, Duster, and Boney. After destroying it, the Pigmasks flee and Flint can get his hands on a notebook detailing the vile Chimera Project. Later when the twins are found, it's revealed that Hinawa was killed by a Drago. But no one in the village predicts that the Drago had been reconstructed by the Pigmask Army, and was mechanically modified into becoming hostile. At the end of the chapter, the Drago is put out of its misery as the chimeras seem to signal a turn for the worst in Tazmily.
Chapter 3[]
Concern raises for the chimeras infesting Tazmily, as Fassad uses it as an opportunity to monger fear upon the Tazmily villagers in order to swindle them.
Chapter 4[]
As the years pass, the villagers grow to accept the chimeras being a common danger on the islands, but concern for them decreases. The line between chimeras and real animals blurs, as they spread across Nowhere Islands, becoming even more common than normal animals. When Lucas walks to the Clayman Factory on foot, there are various chimeras for him to stay cautious of.
Chapter 5[]
Chimeras are no less common in Chapter 5, remaining as frequent enemies and even being present in Pigmask workspaces, as "Whatevers" are kept in Thunder Tower for an unknown reason. Many chimeras are also present on the highways.
Chapter 7[]
Chimeras are present all throughout Chapter 7. Even remaining on Tanetane Island across the seas. Lucas must enter Chimera Lab so he can get Salsa and Samba to help him reach a needle point. Here, it is revealed that some chimeras actually go for prices, and can be brought out with enough DP. This is also the first area in the game where Porky's name is mentioned. However, during his visit as a disguised part-timer, the Ultimate Chimera and another dangerous chimera break free because of Salsa. Lucas is attacked by the Almost Mecha Lion, which nearly kills him before a Clayman saves him by charging into the lion, catching it off guard and knocking it out.
The Ultimate Chimera is much stronger, as Lucas is warned by a Pigmask to stay cautious and avoid it by all means. Lucas is nearly cornered by the Ultimate Chimera, but once his mask falls off and Salsa catches a glimpse of his face, Salsa remembers how he was saved by Lucas and repays the favor by shutting off the Ultimate Chimera. When it is time to pull Doria's needle, it is at the bottom of a pool of water, and Andonuts assists Lucas by providing him an array of chimeras to help. Eventually, only the Pump Chimera is of any use yet Doria is optimistic regardless of the chimera and how effective they are.
When trying to pull Lydia's needle, Lucas is confronted with the Masked Man who decides not to handle the group, and instead leaves them to the Steel Mechorilla which was made specifically for destruction. The foe proves formidable, but it is eventually destroyed and the group progresses. When Fassad crosses Lucas again, it's revealed that Fassad too has become a chimera after falling from Thunder Tower. Fassad uses his new mechanically modified body to try giving Lucas payback.
Chapter 8[]
In Chapter 8, it becomes much more clear that the chimeras are truly Porky's twisted toys as they are scattered throughout floors in the Empire Porky Building, one particular floor made solely for Hippo Launchers, which are chimeras which were developed for Porky's birthday. When Lucas and Co. reach the 100th floor, they must face one last challenge to reach Porky, defeating the Natural Killer Cyborg.
After meeting Porky Minch for the first time and accessing the needle mines, Flint reveals to Lucas that Claus himself has become a chimera, and is being brainwashed by Porky to pull the needles. When the final needle is pulled, various chimeras can be seen sorrowfully roaming the islands as everything crumbles down.
Trivia[]
- An unused chimera enemy, the Tube Blood Machine, was meant to suck the party's blood in the final game but never made it past the concept phase. Another chimera, the Yellowtail and Radish chimera was cut because it wouldn't be to Porky's liking.
- In a scene that was cut from the final game, Dogfishes are shown dead from the last needle being pulled. This was likely cut due to either implying that all characters died from the final needle, or overall dark imagery.
