Chiropterans are the main antagonists in the Blood+ anime/manga series. They are bat-like creatures that feed from blood.

Biography

Extremely large and muscular, chiropterans are fast and agile monsters. Most chiropterans are large, muscular monstrosities that can easily tear a human apart with their bare hands. Most are capable of flight and are invincible to bullets as they have the ability to regenerate themselves, including entire limbs. Many of them are able to assume human forms, but when a food source is nearby, they reveal their true forms and feast on human blood.

Most of the chiropterans (except for the queens) were originally humans who drank or were injected with a queen's blood. In the series, Diva's blood is used to create most of the chiropterans, so they are vulnerable to the blood of the other queen (Saya), which is extremely toxic to them. Upon death, their entire body crystallizes and they become completely inert. They will shatter if struck after they crystallize.

The very first chiropteran discovered was a mummy found in the 19th century by the scientist Joel Goldschmidt and his assistant Amshel Goldsmith. They named this mummy "SAYA", noting that it was a female and she had died while being pregnant. Joel and Amshel dissected her and removed two cocoons from inside the mummy, from which, two baby girls were born (Saya and Diva).

Queens

The only original chiropterans known are the "queens", the hightest level of chiropterans. There are two queens for each generation, usually twin sisters. The only known ones are the Chiropteran Mummy ("Saya"), the Chiropteran Mummy's twin daughters (Saya and Diva), and Diva's twin daughters (Kanade and Hibiki).

The blood of one queen is poison to the other, killing the opposite queen and any chiropteran that was created by her if drank or injected. The queens also go through hibernation cycles in which they stay awake and active only for a couple of years before falling into a deep slumber that lasts 30 years.

Chevaliers

If a human is given blood by a queen directly, normally mouth-to-mouth, they will become a "chevalier", the second highest level chiropterans. Chevaliers are servants who share a strong bond with the queen who turned them. They usually loyally follow and protect their queen forever. They are also the only chiropterans who can impregnate the queens, as the only known way for a queen to get pregnant is if she has sex with the chevalier of the other queen, which was confirmed after Diva raped Riku (one of Saya's chevaliers) and got pregnant with twins.

The Schiff

The Schiff are chiropterans that were created in a lab with Diva's blood to be used as soldiers. The lead scientist who created them was named Dr. Boris and the research was sponsored by Amshel Goldsmith. Schiffs are different from other chiropterans, in addition to being artificially created and raised most of their lives inside a lab, they have weaknesses that the others do not: they can be burned to death by sunlight and they have a condition called "Thorn", which slowly crystallizes their bodies and will eventually kill them if they don't drink the blood of the queen they were created from. According to Dr. Boris, this happens simply because the Schiff were created as disposable soldiers who aren't supposed to last.

Regular Chiropterans

Any human who is injected with one of the queen's blood or consumes it indirectly (in their food, drink, medicine, etc), gradually becomes a type of chiropteran that is eventually consumed by their desire to drink blood. They are the most common form of chiropteran: bloodthirsty monsters without conscience that attack foes or friends indiscriminately.

With the intent of turning the entire humanity into chiropterans, Diva's chevaliers (led by Amshel) have a pharmaceutical company called Cinq Flèches distributing products made with Diva's blood. The transformations of humans who consumed these products are also triggered immediately if they hear Diva's song (especially if it is heard in person or through a live broadcast).
