Chizumi Azawa is one of the two main protagonists (alongside her brother Yuuma) of the Junji Ito manga series Dissolving. She first appears in the series' first part, Dissolving Classroom.
She is the young evil sister of Yuuma Azawa who devours the remains of those that have dissolved following their interactions with Yuuma. Upon each of their encounters, the two of them travel to a new location.
Biography[]
Past[]
The exact origins of Chizumi and her twisted personality are unclear due to Yuuma and Chizumi contradicting parts of the story each time he tells it.
Yuuma had claimed that Chizumi's and his parents had died while Chizumi was still a toddler, as a result of their brains spilling out of their heads. Chizumi had apparently developed her taste for brains after lapping up the remains as a toddler. Following this, Chizumi had Yuuma raising them by himself. Yuuma also claims that prior to their parent's deaths, Chizumi was initially sweet and innocent. Yuuma also came to believe that after the deaths of his parents, the spirits of the snakes that he killed had possessed his sister, and warped her personality. Yuuma however also claims that she was actually conceived as a result of Yuuma's mother having an affair with the Devil, and thus was doomed from the start to be evil.
Dissolving Classroom[]
When reports of the outbreak of a mysterious disease had emerged, a schoolgirl named Keiko, walking on her way home, notices a creepy little girl who has been stalking her along her trip. Keiko tries to runaway from her, but keeps seeing her on every corner. Chizumi then declares that she wants to slurp out Keiko's brains, which causes Keiko to retreat and get hit by an oncoming truck.
After Keiko was sent to the Ohashi Hospital following the accident, Yuuma has been making daily visits to apologize for Keiko's current state, stating that his sister was at fault. Rumors of a creepy girl appearing on street corners then began to spread. Yuuma apologizes to a couple who's faced the misfortunes set by Chizumi, to which Keiko intervenes when his apology isn't accepted. Keiko decides that she wants to befriend Chizumi, and visit the Azawas' apartment, believing that doing so can redeem her.
When Keiko visits the apartment, noticing the overbearing smell, Chizumi suddenly appears and frightens her. After Keiko requests to befriend Chizumi, Chizumi tells Keiko that she'll do this in exchange for her brains. After Keiko asks Chizumi about how Yuuma feels about constantly apologizing, Chizumi answers that he does this out of the pleasure of asking for the Devil for forgiveness, rather than admitting any guilt or regret for the misfortunes that are brought upon people. Chizumi also claims that contrary to Yuuma's claim of killing and abusing small animals to relieve stress of his own abusive family life, Yuuma has actually done this as part of ritual to summon the Devil.
After Keiko declares that Chizumi is lying about her brother, Chizumi opens a closet, which reveals a shrine decorated with sacrificed forest animals and the severed heads of their parents with their eyes and brains melted out. This prompts Keiko to run out of the apartment scared, and return home. That night, and the day after, everyone besides Keiko has a grotesque liquid leaking out of their nose, causing them to lose their memory. By the time Keiko attempts to stand up for Yuuma against some bullies, their eyes have also melted out of their eye sockets, and they drop dead. Chizumi suddenly appears on the scene, and proceeds to lick off the dissolved brains of everyone who had died.
Chizumi explains that the brains of those that Yuuma apologizes to melt due to electromagnetic waves passing between him and the Devil. After Keiko is hospitalized due to her brain being partially melted, word got out that both Yuuma and Chizumi had moved to another location.
Dissolving Beauty[]
Chizumi appears towards the end of the second part, Dissolving Beauty. After the face of another school girl, Nao, becomes malformed as a result of Yuuma complimenting her beauty, Chizumi appears and repeatedly insults her appearance. She also tells Nao about Yuuma's ability to melt people's brains and faces by apologizing and complimenting them. Nao does not believe this, Yuuma returns, and Yuuma demands Chizumi to return home. Under mysterious circumstances, both Yuuma and Chizumi have again moved to another location.
Dissolving Apartment[]
When the undead parents of both Yuuma and Chizumi are visiting the apartments of various people, they offer them mochi which gives them severe food poisoning. It also makes them hear the voices of the both of them, along with Yuuma's and Chizumi's. A group of the residents then go to the Azawa's apartment, where they find Chizumi, whose face is covered in band-aids. When a woman in the group asks if her parents are there, she repeats that they died when she was still an infant, and threatens that they should all kill themselves if they want to see them.
Chizumi invites the woman in, which the woman refuses. Afterwards, Chizumi dangles the severed head of her mother by a tied up clump of its hair at the window of her apartment to scare her. That night the woman is greeted by Yuuma who tries to apologize to her for his sister, also looking battered in appearance like his sister. This prompts her and a group of other people at the apartment to go to the Azawa's apartment, where they seem to meet their parents, who appear to be zombified.
The next day, Chizumi is watching over the woman, who is conversing with an older woman about the strange family. The old woman then invites Chizumi into her apartment for shortcake, which Chizumi is shown eating rather savagely. When the old woman comments on the bandages on her face, Chizumi removes them, and tells them about Yuuma's seemingly deceitful behavior, stating that he enjoys being abused by his parents.
After a man from the apartment comes up to the Azawa's apartment, he witnesses the brains of their parents melting out of their eyes sockets and noses, and he, along with his parents, start to beat Yuuma up, only to be stopped by the woman. Chizumi has also been watching over this. She also watches over the old woman cleaning the bruises on Yuuma's face, telling both him and Chizumi that they can stay at her apartment. Suddenly, a smelly goop drips from the ceiling, and Chizumi tells both the woman and the old woman that this is the result of the man from earlier having his body dissolved. When they go up to the apartment, they find the bodies of both parents melting, and their bodies also begin to melt. Afterwards, Chizumi tells her brother that they will be moving to yet another location.
Chizumi's Dissolving Love[]
???
Appearance[]
Those unfortunate enough to run into Chizumi often note her large beady eyes with small, pin-hole sized pupils. She also has a large mouth with a long narrow tongue, used to slurp up the dissolved remains of those that have interacted with her brother.
Personality[]
In contrast to her brother, Chizumi is rude, aggressive, and openly hostile towards everyone who speaks to her. Chizumi also stalks around people that have met up with her brother, typically women and other children, giving an ominous presence. Of the two, Chizumi also appears to be more blunt and honest with her statements regarding both Yuuma and herself, no matter how unpleasant the truth may be.
