| ~ Chris encouraging Scott Kagen to join him and Michael Kosina in gang-raping a woman |
Chris Salters is the secondary antagonist of the Criminal Minds episode "Middle Man". He is a serial rapist and kidnapper who is one of serial killer Michael Kosina's two submissive partners in raping and murdering exotic dancers.
He was portrayed by Michael Grant Terry.
Early life[]
Chris was born and raised in Greenwood, Indiana by the town's sheriff, Jeff Salters, an abusive bully who regularly beat and belittled him. As a teenager, Chris was arrested several times for assault and petty drug offenses; while his father pulled strings to make the charges go away, he beat him mercilessly to "discipline" him.
As an adult, Chris went to Ernstrom University, where he tried to join the track team and pledge the fraternity Kappa Iota Phi, only to be rejected from both. He started hanging out with Michael Kosina, a sociopathic classmate who was thrown out of the fraternity for sexually assaulting female coeds, and the two of them spent their nights prowling the bar where Chris worked for drunk women to take advantage of. One night, they got into a bar fight that Kosina instigated in which they both injured several people.
After Chris and Kosina were kicked out of school for sexual harassment and fighting, Kosina came up with the idea to get back at the women they felt had wronged them by kidnapping and raping exotic dancers. He assured Chris that they could get away with it because he and two accomplices had raped four women in his hometown in Louisiana without getting caught; he left out that he escaped arrest by framing and murdering his accomplices. At Kosina's direction, Chris recruited Scott Kagen, a classmate who had also been rejected by the fraternity, into the group, whom Kosina nicknamed "The Johnson County Brotherhood". The three of them kidnapped exotic dancer Kimberly Jukes, forcing her at gunpoint to dance for them and taking turns raping her. After they had raped and abused her for two days, Kosina - without Salters' or Kagen's knowledge - took Jukes out into a nearby cornfield and strangled her to death. Weeks later, the trio kidnapped and raped another dancer named Amanda Frye, and once again Kosina murdered her without his accomplices' knowledge.
"Middle Man"[]
After kidnapping and raping their latest victim, Stephanie Wilson, Kosina orders Chris and Kagen to keep her locked up in the former's basement. The following day, Chris and Kagen watch the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), who are consulting with Sheriff Salters' office on the case, hold a press conference on the local news in which they reveal that the gang's rape victims were also murdered. Horrified, they confront Kosina, who nonchalantly admits to killing the women to keep them from going to the police.
When Kagen panics and says he wants out, Kosina orders Salters to beat him up with a baseball bat to "put him in his place". Salters does so, but balks when Kosina orders her to kill Kagen. Kosina threatens to kill him too unless he does as he is told, however, so he reluctantly beats Kagen to death. Feeling scared and guilty, Salters calls his father for help, but changes his mind and hangs up at the last minute. Nevertheless, Kosina beats him up for even thinking about turning himself in.
Kosina tells Chris that they have to kill Wilson to tie up loose ends. Before they can shoot her, however, BAU Agents David Rossi, Aaron Hotchner, Emily Prentiss, Derek Morgan, and Spencer Reid - who have deduced their identities and whereabouts from a psychological profile and information on their past run-ins with the law found by Technical Analyst Penelope Garcia - burst in to arrest them, with Sheriff Salters accompanying them to make sure Chris is taken alive.
Terrified, Chris threatens to open fire unless the BAU backs off, while Kosina holds Wilson at gunpoint. When Prentiss tells Chris that Kosina murdered his accomplices in Louisiana and will do the same to him, however, he accuses Kosina of betraying him, and a fight ensues in which Kosina tries to kill him. Sheriff Salters shoots Kosina dead and begs his son to surrender, but Chris refuses, saying he would rather die than go to prison. Before he can turn his gun on himself, however, his father shoots him in the arm, incapacitating him long enough for the BAU to arrest him. He is then imprisoned for life for murder and multiple charges of rape and kidnapping.
