The man who said "I'd rather be lucky than good." saw deeply into life. People are afraid to face how great a part of life is dependent on luck. It's scary to think so much is out of one's control. There are moments in a match when the ball hits the top of the net, and for a split second, it can either go forward or fall back. With a little luck, it goes forward, and you win. Or maybe it doesn't, and you lose.
~ Chris Wilton's philosophy.
The innocent are sometimes slain to make way for grander schemes. You were collateral damage.
~ Chris rationalizing his murders.

Christopher "Chris" Wilton is the main protagonist of the 2005 psychological thriller film Match Point.

He does not begin as a villain in the movie, and is depicted as having an inner conflict in his relationships. He falls in love with an actress named Nola Rice and has a secret affair with her. Chris takes drastic measures to ensure that his wife Chloe does not discover his infidelity, eventually resorting to murder to that end.

He was portrayed by Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who also portrayed King Henry VIII in The Tudors and Valentine Morgenstern in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.

Biography[]

A young professional tennis player from Ireland who came from a poor background, Chris Wilton has recently retired in the beginning of the film. He has moved to London, where he gets a job as a tennis instructor at a country club there. He lives by himself in an apartment, reading Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment and listening to opera in his spare time. At the tennis club, he meets a wealthy pupil named Tom Hewett, whom he becomes friends with due to their common interest of opera. Chris soon meets Tom's sister Chloe, who becomes attracted to him. Chris and Chloe begin dating shortly after.

During a family gathering, Chris meets Tom's American fiancée Nola Rice, a beautiful, aspiring actress. They immediately fall in love with each other. Chloe convinces her father, Alec, to hire Chris as an executive in one of his companies. Chris accepts the job. He and Chloe's family begin to consider marriage.

One day while shopping, Chris runs into Nola on her way to an audition, and offers to go along with her for moral support. Nola fails her audition, after which they go to a bar. Chris and Nola have a conversation about their relationships, during which Nola tells Chris he will succeed in being part of the Hewett family and will lose his chance by making a pass at her. That afternoon, Chris follows an upset Nola wandering in the rain. He confesses his feelings for her. They then kiss and have sex in a wheat field. Chris wants to continue the affair, but Nola, feeling guilty, does not and grows distant from him. As time passes, Chris and Chloe marry, and Tom breaks up with Nola. Chris appears to be fond of Chloe, but is more interested in her money than herself.

Chloe struggles to become pregnant, in spite of her numerous attempts with Chris. Chris looks for Nola, eventually meeting her by chance in the Tate Modern. They soon begin a full-blown affair. After a while, Nola informs Chris she is pregnant. Chris asks her to get an abortion, but Nola refuses, wanting to raise the child with Chris. She pressures Chris to divorce Chloe. Chris grows distant from Chloe and is unable to tell her the truth. He instead keeps lying to both Chloe and Nola. Nola confronts Chris about his behavior, threatening to tell Chloe about the affair if Chris does not.

The conflict culminates in Chris plotting to kill Nola. He steals a shotgun from Alec's home. To distract Chloe, he buys tickets for the musical "The Woman in White", although Chloe knows he hates musicals. A day later, he calls Nola and tells her to come home right after work, lying that he has taken care of the problem. Chris then heads to Nola's apartment building. He shoots and kills her neighbor Mrs. Eastby, and stages a burglary. As Nola arrives, he shoots her as well before heading out to watch the musical with Chloe. The next day, he returns the gun and Chloe announces she is pregnant.

As the police investigate the murders, Detective Mike Banner summons Chris for questioning. Before the interview, Chris disposes of Mrs. Eastby's jewelry and drugs by throwing them into a river, but a ring ends up on the pavement. Chris initially lies and denies his relationship with Nola, but Banner reveals that Nola had kept a diary detailing their relationship. Chris confesses to the affair, but not the murder of Nola.

That night, Chris is confronted by the ghosts of Nola and Mrs. Eastby in a dream. They tell him to prepare to face the consequences of killing them. Although Chris admits what he did was wrong, he says he is able to suppress his guilt. Banner dreams that Chris committed the murders and tries to link him with the incident. However, his partner tells him that a homeless drug addict who was found dead had Mrs. Eastby's ring in his pocket. The detectives conclude that he was the culprit and end their investigation. Chris, having gotten away with the murders, finally has a baby boy with Chloe.
