Christopher Maynard is the secondary antagonist of the 1996 action film The Glimmer Man. He is a fanatically religious serial killer who kills couples in their sleep and crucifies them after their deaths.

He was portrayed by Stephen Tobolowsky, who also played Happy Chapman in Garfiled: The Movie, Jerry Barkley in Justified, Uncle Ubb in The Lorax, Ronald Tompkins in Toy Story of Terror! and Ferris Boyle in Batman: Arkham Origins.

Biography[]

As the movie begins, Maynard has already killed six couples. When the police distribute photos of the crime scenes in jails and psychiatric institutes, a woman who organizes drawing class in prison recognizes its signature as belonging to Maynard, who had previously been incarcerated there. Detective Jack Cole, who is investigating the case, learns the identity of the killer, he finds a Catholic church close to his home.

There, after assisting to a mass, Maynard spots Cole, so he takes a priest hostage. Cole in turn enters in the church, he begins to talk with Maynard, so he confesses to Cole that he hates killing people. Cole finally convinces Maynard to let the priest go what it does, now alone, they begin to talk of the murders, with Maynard revealing that he didn't kill the two last couples. After that, he begins to panic, and threatens to shoot Cole in order to commit suicide by cop. Cole shoots first, however, and kills Maynard, unwittingly giving him what he wanted.

Trivia[]

  • Allegedly, Steven Seagal (the actor who played Cole) didn’t want his character to kill anyone onscreen, so the scene where Maynard is killed was rewritten to him wanting to die so Seagal would do the scene.
