Synopsis

The story of Christopher Pelant in Bones.

Biography[]

Christopher Pelant was officially born in 1986 at Denmark, who then resided in the town of Pitt Meadows, Virginia after becoming an eligible US citizen as a child. His parents divorced thereafter and was close with his father, although they rarely saw each other afterwards.

During his time at high-school, he had a guidance counselor named Carole Morrissey, whom he asked for a letter of recommendation to Stanford but later refused. Following this, he then hacked into her computer and wrote the letter himself, later into murdering her with his grandfather's WWII katana he "borrowed." Upon learning that Pelant himself was obese, he replaced the pictures onto an online yearbook, having his appearance then be slim, overall distorting the statistics of Morrissey's murder.

He was already a notorious hacker before turning into a serial killer, where one instance was shutting down the Senate website in 2009 and the Department of Defense network in 2010 by hacking into Pentagon security. He would then be arrested on counts of wire and computer fraud and sentenced to two years house arrest. His hacking incidents against the US government have endangered countless United States soldiers, but stated that he did it to expose the corruption of the FBI. Most of those phrases he left on the website after shutting them down were "Where's the website?" and "What are you defending?" respectively on both incidents.

Inger Johannsen's Murder[]

Johannsen's second set of remains in the archive building.

Pelant arrived at his first victim of his serial murders, Inger Johannsen, and murdered her with a bang-stick that had her remains scattered all over the pool. His relationship with Johannsen is unknown, yet the only possibility is that both originated from Denmark and arrived to the United States. After that, Pelant scrambled the vertebrae of her spine to pinpoint the location of most of her remains, and brought her spine to the American Heritage Museum where the Jeffersonian and FBI teams would discover. Pelant acknowledges the potential scan that Angela would perform on Johannsen's remains, so he engraves malware code onto one of Johannsen's bones so that Angela's computers would fry after scanning.

In the same process, he discreetly blinded the surveillance cameras using a homemade laser pointer inside a mint tin, and wrote the words "Where is the rest of me?" with blood on the Lincoln statue. Pelant then transported most of Johannsen's remains to the Justice Departments' archive building, where he specifically stored the limbs and ribs into a box containing the identities of agents whose blood were engraved on the statue.

Meeting Seeley Booth[]

Pelant's debut appearance.

He first appeared in the series when Booth and Sweets visit him for information regarding Johannsen's murder, where his house contained an old non-functioning computer. Following previous information from his biography, he wore an ankle bracelet that pings every 38 seconds due to his government hacking incidents. In his discussion with Booth and Sweets, he mentioned that Ezra Krane called him about Johannsen's murder, implying that Krane had something do with the murder where the latter would try pursuing a story to keep his career alive, or so to speak.

He contacted Ezra Krane about the FBI's corruption, including his involvement in the murder of Johannsen. His nervousness (knowing that Krane would have the courage to out him as the primary source) made him decide to kill Krane with the same bang stick used on Johannsen, but instead of the usual mind-game with his body, he had his corpse hung on a flag post for the authorities to see. When the Jeffersonian team requested Krane's body to be delivered to their institution for further investigation into providing evidence for Pelant's involvement, Pelant manipulated the paperwork from hospitals to have Krane's corpse be cremated before an autopsy can be made.

Pelant is then taken to custody and interrogated regarding Krane's murder, but reinstated his alibi that he never left the house due to his ankle monitor still attached to his leg. Sweets stated that what Pelant did was quantum indeterminacy, since he possibly committed everything under 38 seconds. Because of this, he is released from custody due to lack of evidence that supports his involvement in the murder, yet he didn't deny the contrary of being responsible for them.

Ethan Sawyer's Murder[]

Sawyer's remains.

Pelant learns about a mental institutional patient named Ethan Sawyer, who specialized in artificial intelligence and mathematical constructs for human behavior. Sawyer had more intelligence than Pelant, and since his relationship and conversation with Dr. Temperance Brennan would decide Pelant to drug him with turbocurarine and had nearby wolves eat him alive. Upon his revelation that Sawyer's beliefs of Christine Booth as a demon, this created him Brennan's motive and allowed him to plant more evidence that tied to Brennan as the murderer. He also went to tamper the security footage of the institution entrance with Brennan leaving the building timestamped the night before Sawyer's murder.

He is later seen awaiting parole to have his ankle bracelet removed, where Booth and Brennan provide evidence and crime photos against Pelant for his possible involvement in the killings. However, Pelant had hacked both Booth and Brennan's phones to mimic a wolf howl prior to his parole hearing, and looking at them once they acknowledged. The sound gave clues to both with the potential murder victim's cause of death. The potential murder victim is later known to be Sawyer, Brennan's best friend back in grad school, and that the demon who Sawyer believed was Brennan's child.

Booth received a call to what he believed was a kidnapped Brennan in the closet at Pelant's house, so Booth immediately rushed to check. When Booth arrived to Pelant's home unannounced and unprovoked, Pelant stated that Bones was not here and that he was all alone. Booth didn't realize that Pelant had already deactivated the ankle bracelet, so that the authorities would arrive to his house within moments. Booth's arrogance and stubbornness of Brennan's whereabouts would prove critically to release Pelant from house arrest, and got both Booth and Brennan removed from the case, to where Agent Hayes Flynn took over in response.

This act would also entail with several other Jeffersonian members, which involved Sweets because he protected Brennan, and later Caroline because of warrant infringement. Meanwhile, a large triangle of symbols engraved in Sawyer's saliva were left for Hodgins and Cam to discover in Sawyer's own psychiatric room. The evidence of Sawyer's murder is too tight towards Brennan to the point where Max Keenan had to assist her escape off the grid. While Booth and Brennan were christening their child, Pelant trespassed their property, switching out their bed clock with his own. Upon leaving their household, he encountered their baby room security camera, knowing that he would erase himself from the footage at that moment.

He became an IT instructor and teacher who guides his students how to operate a computer. He then requested Hayes to arrive and arrest Booth when he entered with a stare. Meanwhile, he later met Hodgins at a graveyard, where he used Sweets' files of Hodgins to use against him, stating that he's too good of a threat to kill Pelant. Hodgins proved otherwise, as Pelant expected, to which Hodgins realized about Brennan and released him. Keenan later arrived to Pelant's whereabouts at the graveyard and told him that himself and Brennan are headed for the Mexican border. Booth needed a way to bring Pelant in for a particular crime, such as computer fraud (alike with the government websites he hacked back in 2009 and 2010), to which he was placed under arrest unprovoked. It was until the Jeffersonian teams that uncovered Morrisey's murder in 2003 where they uncovered iron-solid proof that proved his involvement in the murder. Angela also used Sawyer's saliva triangle with its three sides as an eraser to Brennan's appearance from the institution footage, with the entire triangle depicting Pelant's entire personality.

Pelant planned his interchangeable identity in advance as Bassam Alfayat. For this situation, he made up his alias background (specifically being an Egyptian diplomat whose his alias' government deports him back) to release himself from custody as a different person originating from Egypt. He then delivered a marigold to Brennan, symbolizing his "pain and grief" message that Booth later threw away, and Flynn retrieving said flower back.

Hunt for Pelant[]

Another murder victim of his killing spree was a Special Forces mercenary named Xavier Freeman. Upon finding him, he tortured him extensively with multiple needles before he later died from suffering pain. He then flayed Freeman's corpse to resemble Vesalius' but with carved holes that intentionally would spell the letters once Brennan got a hold of the book containing said information. Pelant broke into Angela and Hodgins' apartment complex, and released "untraceable" anesthesia gas that drugged them as they slept. He tied a net above their double bed, placed Freeman's flayed corpse over, and bloody flower petals encircling their son Michael Vincent in his crib due to Hodgin's threats against Pelant a few months ago.

Pelant then used Freeman's Serberus ID card and replaced their identity with his own as Justin Trimple. Most of his mistakes, Angela used against him, is shown when he tried to clear out all intentional spam messages sent from a proxy link, he unintentionally released his server IP address which pinpointed his location to the FBI.

During the FBI raid at Serberus headquarters, Pelant watched the FBI SWAT teams barged in and made his escape just after hot-wiring the in-house servers that controlled the defenses and equipment there. With this, he manipulated the cameras to show him leaving at multiple places within the same time (like how he manipulated Sawyer's institution's with Brennan to pinpoint her as the former's murder), where he actually escaped through a secret exit. As soon both Booth and Flynn caught up towards him, he activated the mounted mini-guns to unleash towards them, successfully incapacitating Flynn but missing Booth. An unscathed Booth caught up to Pelant, and proceeded to shoot from behind, eventually obliterating Pelant's face's right side just before he escaped the building.

As Pelant left the Serberus headquarters, he activated the eighth floor, which contained the controls that manipulate Serberus' MQ-9 Predator drone, after Pelant coordinated the drone towards a target specifically within the Kanahar Province of the Middle East. Serberus team tried to intercept, but no success. M-E-L-Y-C-U were the letters highlighted by Pelant from Freeman's corpse, becoming the unscrambled LYCEUM as an access code for the Predator drone, and another word for "school." Pelant's hijacked drone had been planned to target and destroy a nearby school filled with young girls. Meanwhile, Pelant drains Hodgins' entire savings on all of his accounts and made the ultimatum towards Hodgins, him deciding to save the money or the children, since shutting down the Serberus server would leave the drone feral. Hodgins decided to save the children, so Angela then ordered the Predator drone to self-destruct, saving the school and relieving all the Jeffersonian, FBI, and Serberus team from danger.

Upon being wounded by Booth in the right cheek, he stormed into a random and nearby veterinarian office where he murdered a veterinarian off-screen to use their medical supplies and sew his injured face. His wound then healed after the event, revealing a scar that permanently blinded him on his face's right side.

Pelant's Counterattack[]

Pelant posing as Harris Samuels, Anna Samuels' father.

You, uh, you crossed a line when you shot me, Agent Booth. I thought... I thought we were working so well together. I never did anything to hurt you guys. Now the rules have changed.
~ Pelant intensifying his game.

He planned his counterattack against the Jeffersonian and the FBI by manipulating Anna Samuels into murdering FBI agents involved in the Crystal Creek raid that went south, by creating deepfake videos using her father Harris Samuels to express his "assassination" and cover-up by the FBI, ultimately convincing Anna. During his time behind the camera and orchestrating Samuel's serial murder spree, he's consistently stalking Booth and Brennan, and felt dismayed upon observing Brennan's marriage proposal to Booth to which the latter accepted.

Pelant led Samuels to murder many of Booth's old partners such as Alan Friedlander, and Jeff Stone. Once Samuels was (or even already) at the crime scene, she acted as a supposed witness who saw the killings and falsely incriminated Zane Reynolds for the murders. As for Friedlander and Stone's medical history, Pelant wiped their records to throw the Jeffersonian team off many steps of catching their supposed killer. When Booth discovered Stone's corpse, Pelant discreetly called Booth that he crossed the line by scarring him and made his game more dangerous. Samuels learned of her "father's" words before heading off to assassinate Sweets, whom Pelant had stuck in traffic following the several fender-benders by malfunctioning the traffic lights on Sweets' street and scrambling the guidance for helicopters to direct away from Sweets' location, ensuring Samuels' lenient approach to attempt killing Sweets before Booth intervened in the last second.

I really do decide what happens next, and this will happen too maybe because I've read everything Dr. Sweets has written about you and Dr. Brennan. I know you could never trade five innocent lives for your own happiness.
~ Pelant to Booth.

When Booth hung out with Brennan at the park, Pelant called him once again and threatened to murder five more innocents if Booth kept his engagement with Brennan. His threat led Booth to break up with Brennan to save the innocents from Pelant's harm, which made Angela and some others to temporarily break off their friendship bond with Booth. Eventually, Pelant was then implied to have spied on them once again when Brennan reconciled with Booth due to her faith in him.

Agent Flynn's Murder[]

ChristopherPelant-hayesflynn-death

The Jeffersonian attempts to communicate and goad Pelant with Donald Hestnes' corpse, having been only interested in Baroque, and their idea was to trap Pelant using his techniques and appeal his tendencies. With Flynn's assistance, Booth entrusted the body to him and Brennan instructed him to perfect the visual. Unfortunately, Pelant went beyond their plans, and theirs backfired. Flynn alone made it the perfect opportunity for Pelant to strike and murder him, with Hestnes' body being replaced with Flynn's. Pelant left the flower on the crime scene, which already told the Jeffersonian that he outsmarted them once again.

The FBI searched inside Flynn's apartment to where they discovered money and passports in his fridge, which implied Pelant planted those to believe that Flynn was selling the team out when Booth thought otherwise. Later, the Jeffersonian found and the FBI interrogated the doctor that operated on an incapacitated Flynn during the Serberus raid, having stated that Pelant was using him to make Flynn corrupt.

Pelant confronting Dr. Brennan about the Ghost Killer.

As Brennan were looking for bones from 9 years ago, Pelant arrived in Jeffersonian staff uniform and conversed with Brennan about the Ghost Killer, just after setting one of his toys that almost acted a motion-sensor grenade against Brennan. He first told about Chloe Campbell, and many other unidentified victims who were killed by one person, where Brennan unknowingly missed. Then he gloated about how he'll find the killer first and that they will never find them without him. Pelant later activated the grenade, and took off before the security guards and Booth arrived, to which the latter discovered the fake toy and disabled the object. With Brennan inspecting six of Pelant's mentioned remains, he scrambled them, except Campbell's, meaning he was sending another message.

Cam found a tooth in Flynn's stomach, filling with particulates where Pelant forgot to sterilize. The particulates lead the Jeffersonian to an abandoned foundry, having it been identified as coal ash. Booth acknowledged this information, and planned to go there and kill him. However, Brennan arrived first, so Booth moved immediately.

Final Confrontation[]

Pelant seeing Brennan once again in his lair.

Dr. Brennan: Christopher? I'm here.
Pelant: So am I. Nice to see you. Temperance, you look beautiful. How much time do you think we have before Booth gets here?
Dr. Brennan: I'm alone.
Pelant: Yeah. But, that never lasts very long, does it?
~ Pelant to Brennan before meeting for the first time in person.

Pelant expected only Brennan to arrive in his lair, giving information to Brennan that only she understands where Pelant currently resided. Upon her meeting Pelant, he gleefully introduced himself to her in person for the first time since his arrest following Ethan Sawyer's murder. When Booth got a hold of this information with surveillance cameras, he also arrived at Pelant's location, prompting Brennan to make a quick decision since he now acknowledged Booth's arrival. Luring her into an electrical trap, he activated it, creating a small faulty explosion that disarmed Brennan of her pistol. Pelant ensured that the minor explosion didn't fatally wound her, and that he helped her back up after.

Booth eventually arrived to his whereabouts, where Pelant then proceeded to threaten both by leveling the building with a remote, when in actuality was one of his toys that never do such. Brennan, knowing this, called out Pelant's bluff and Pelant then retaliated by manipulating Booth that Brennan was willing to let the former die to save Pelant. His spiteful plan ultimately failed, given Booth's determination and reflection of his bluffing to finally "disconnect the computer" by fatally shooting his neck.

Aftermath[]

His contributions of the Ghost Killer gave the Jeffersonian Institution some leads to work with, with six bodies of the killer's victims, and his statement being that he has "a reason to believe it's a woman." This eventually led to the exposure of Stephanie McNamara, who he may or may not know them personally; and Glen Durant, who covered up her crimes and resulted in Kenneth Emory fatally beating Sweets to death under their orders. These events also led to Booth's gambling addiction relapse due to the former, until Booth later mentally improved.

A killer had been using his exact same techniques: the engraved blood, the flaying, the monument of the corpse display, and a flower entailing a message. They were then revealed to be Leelah Strawn who killed Franklin Holt as the murder victim. Later they housed the earnings of Hodgins account that Hodgin lost two years ago, to which the discovered savings are then transferred to charities that need it.

The late Pelant in Brennan's computer monitor.

If you're watching this, I'm dead, but not gone. There is an afterlife; A digital afterlife that will keep me alive forever. If you thought something as simple as death would stop me, you've underestimated my abilities. Freed from the limitation-
~ Pelant's final message in a video before Dr. Brennan turns it off.

Daisy Wick stumbled upon the recovered tape that referenced her favorite movie Strange Brew, unknowing that she provided Angela the data she needed to uncover. Angela then decoded the data from the tape which contained a recording from the late Pelant, later showcasing the clip to Brennan. Pelant stated that he currently lives in the virtual world where he will forever exist, yet Brennan decided to leave him in the past, since its where he belongs and won't hurt her and Booth's family in the future, finally deciding to let him go forever.
