~ Chrollo Lucilfer to Neon Nostrade. |
Chrollo Lucilfer (Japanese: クロロ゠ルシルフル), is one of the main antagonists of the manga/anime series Hunter x Hunter. He is the founder and leader of the Phantom Troupe, being the number 0 of the group, hailing from Meteor City.
After attempting a raid at an auction, he falls victim to Kurapika's Judgement Chain, which prohibits him from using Nen or speaking to the other members of the Troupe, forcing him to search for an exorcist who can remove the chain. He is the archenemy of both Kurapika and Hisoka Morow.
In Japanese, he was voiced by Yoshikazu Nagano in the 1999 anime and Mamoru Miyano (who also voiced Light Yagami in Death Note, Shuu Tsukiyama in Tokyo Ghoul, Doma in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba), Hikaru Kamiki in Oshi no Ko in the 2011 anime. In English, he was voiced by Richard Meen in the 1999 anime and Robbie Daymond (who also voiced Goro Akechi in Persona 5, Happy Chaos in Guilty Gear Strive, Gaelio Bauduin in Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, Flect Turn in My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission, Jugram Haschwalth in Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, Toneri Otsutsuki in The Last: Naruto the Movie and Curious Cat in RWBY) in the 2011 anime.
Appearance[]
Chrollo is a handsome young man with dark hair and grey eyes. Two of his distinguishing features are the cross-shaped tattoo on his forehead and a pair of orb-shaped earrings. He is usually seen wearing a fur-collared leather and fur trench coat that is unbuttoned, revealing his muscular body, the coat is imprinted with the golden St. Peter's Crosson the back. Prior to the foundation of the Phantom Troupe, Chrollo never wore his trademark coat, nor did he comb his hair backwards. When approaching Neon Nostrade in order to steal her Nen ability, he wears a blue blazer, with his hair hanging down naturally and the cross tattoo hidden behind a bandage wrapped around his forehead. His spider tattoo is located on his right arm in the 1999 anime series.
Personality[]
Chrollo Lucilfer is calm and comes across as intelligent and charismatic. He seems to be a born leader, able to hold the Phantom Troupe together despite the volatile personalities that make it up, and is a very capable strategist. He is always accompanied by at least two people, which is why Hisoka was unable to fight him. After he has admired the objects that he targeted and acquired, Chrollo sells everything. It is also stated that Chrollo likes antique books.
The only people Chrollo seems to care about are his fellow members of the Phantom Troupe. When Chrollo reads Neon's prophecy, which contains Uvogin's death, he cries for him. Later on, he orchestrates a massacre of Mafia members as a requiem to his fallen comrade. Besides that, Chrollo shows no fear of his own death, even anticipating it. Melody stated that his heartbeat sounded as if he was happy living alongside death. To Chrollo, the Phantom Troupe is more important than his own life. He once stressed in a group meeting that the survival of the group comes before the well-being of the leader. To paraphrase him, the head of the spider is just another limb that can be sacrificed for the survival of the Spider.
Despite that, he is cold-blooded and not above inhuman mass murder, as he and all of his Troupe members (with the possible exception of Bonolenov) casually and remorselessly commit those crimes. The best example of this cruelty is the massacre of the Kurta clan, in which he and the Troupe killed people regardless of age or gender only to acquire their Scarlet Eyes. but only did Chrollo's usage of his Indoor Fish ability on a helpless assassin further reflects his sadistic nature. There is also an implied hostility between Chrollo and Silva Zoldyck, most likely rooting from their previous encounter after Silva's killing of a Troupe member.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Chrollo was born in Meteor City, a junkyard city populated by outcasts. In his childhood, he is friends with other Troupe members, such as Franklin, Shalnark, Phinks, Uvogin, Machi, and Pakunoda.
One day, Franklin, Shalnark, and Chrollo went to the territory Uvogin was guarding, in hopes of getting a VHS tape of an anime or action series. However, Machi reported their presence to Uvogin, causing him to yell at them to bring back the tape peacefully. Shalnark laughed at him in disbelief, but he was knocked out after Uvogin threw a trash at his head. Franklin then interfered and fought Uvogin, telling him to run. As Chrollo decided to run away, he heard a motorcycle engine where he met both Phinks and Feitan who told Chrollo that, unlike Uvo, he promised to return the tape if he hands it to him nicely. However, he outsmarted Phinks and handed him a VHS tape of learning Gelman language.
He returned to the church where he met Pakunoda and started translating a recording of the Mighty Sweepin' Power Cleaners via dubbing, which was recorded in a foreign language. The dubbed version was then presented in the church where numerous children from Meteor City decided to watch their performance. Becoming impressed by his performance in multiple roles, numerous other children including Uvogin and the other Troupe members decided to join the cast in the next taping. As they lacked enough voice actors for the other rules and needed new ones, they also gave their group the name "Troupe."
By the next special screening at the church, the Troupe wait for both Franklin and Nobunaga who were running late, but are more concerned about Sarasa (who portrayed the Orange Cleaner), who was been missing since the day before. Chrollo then announced the postponement of the show due to Sarasa missing and the recent number of kidnappings occurring in their hometown. Many of the audiences told Chrollo to help him find Sarasa. As they went to a nearby forest, they saw a garbage bag hanging in a tree. As they retrieve it, they found Sarasa's mutilated body with a message inside. The Troupe mourned her death and prepared for her funeral later on.
As Uvo and Chrollo walked in the cemetery, they discussed waiting for years to avenge Sarasa's death and becoming regretful of the actions they caused. Chrollo then stated that he would live the rest of his life as a villain in order to keep away the small-time crooks from Meteor City. The rest of the Troupe decided to join his cause.
At some point, he formed the Phantom Troupe. He and the Troupe killed many people and stole many things. They massacred and wiped out the Kurta Clan to steal their Scarlet Eyes.
Yorknew City arc[]
Chrollo gathered the members of the Troupe to rob the Mafia's auction. He gave them permission to wreak havoc and kill as many people as they wanted. However, Neon's Nen ability revealed the robbery of the auction, and the items were moved. Uvogin suggested that someone betrayed them, but Chrollo doubted any member of the Troupe would be a traitor.
After Uvogin was killed, Chrollo met Neon and tricked her into giving him her Prophetic Abilities. He knocked her out and killed a mafia assassin with ease. He watched as the Phantom Troupe massacred the Mafia, thinking that the carnage was a good requiem for their fallen comrade. Chrollo was attacked by Silva and Zeno Zoldyck. They battled, and Chrollo tried to capture them to steal their powers. However, in the middle of the fight, Illumi Zoldyck called and revealed that he killed the Ten Dons who had hired the Zoldycks, so Silva and Zeno left.
The Troupe also wanted to find Kurapika and kill him. However, using Neon's ability. Chrollo discovered that many members of the Troupe would die if they stayed in Yorknew City. However, Hisoka altered his prophecy to convince the Troupe to stay.
As the Troupe tracked down Kurapika, they discovered Gon and Killua following them and captured them, which was caused by Kurapika recklessly chasing after the Phantom Troupe. Gon asked Chrollo why he so easily killed people, and Chrollo pondered the question, not being able to come up with an answer. They then took Gon and Killua to a hotel. However, due to a meticulous plan with the help of Leorio, Gon and Killua started a diversion by turning off the lights and Kurapika captured Chrollo with his Chain Jail.
The Troupe agreed to trade Gon and Killua for Chrollo. However, Kurapika used his Judgement chain to prevent Chrollo from using Nen. Pakunoda carried out the exchange and Chrollo went free. Hisoka wanted to fight Chrollo, but since Chrollo had no powers, he couldn't fight.
Greed Island and Chimera Ant arc[]
Hisoka used Chrollo's name as a fake alias during the Greed Island arc, much the confusion of Gon's team, who then asked Kurapika about the situation. Kurapika assured them that his Nen ability was still intact on Chrollo's heart, preventing him from using his Nen abilities. Gon's team then used an Accompany card to travel to the location of the player who used Chrollo's name, revealing himself to be none other than Hisoka.
Later on, the Troupe hired a Nen exorcist named Abengane to heal Chrollo with the help of Hisoka.
Succession War arc[]
Chrollo had spent months preparing to fight with Hisoka. Once ready, he entered Heaven's Arena and easily became a Floor Master.
During the fight, Chrollo revealed many new Nen abilities. He had Kortopi's power to make copies and Shalnark's power to possess people. He could also make objects and people explode by marking them. He and Hisoka battled. Chrollo used the audience members as suicide bombers to attack Hisoka. Eventually, he defeated Hisoka, who was killed in the fight.
However, it was later revealed that Hisoka faked his death. Upon reawakening, Hisoka killed Shalnark and Kortopi, vowing to kill everyone in the Phantom Troupe.
Chrollo and the Troupe, including its newest member, Illumi, entered the ship heading towards the Dark Continent, trying to find and kill Hisoka. Shizuku suggested that Chrollo's book acted like the Death Note, in that everyone whose name and ability were written there died.
Powers and Abilities[]
Abilities[]

~ Chrollo Lucilfer to Hisoka Morow. |
Since Chrollo was born in Meteor City, his existence is not recorded in any database, which makes obtaining information about him nearly impossible. As the leader of the Phantom Troupe, his orders are considered of absolute priority by his underlings; however, as Chrollo himself stated, he is not their top priority: they should not take actions that could threaten the whole Spider, even if this means letting him die. Chrollo is an exceptional fighter, being the leader of the Phantom Troupe and recognized as the strongest member by most of them. He was able to fight against Silva and Zeno Zoldyck, both extremely proficient assassins, simultaneously, without leaving any openings for the two to exploit, though he was unable to cause significant damage to either of them.
In the past, he survived a confrontation with Silva, whilst in the present his abilities rival Zeno's. His fighting style is probably freestyle and combines speed with deadly precision. His high level of intelligence aids him, rendering him able to exploit the enemy's weak points. He is also able to kill skilled warriors with just a pen, sometimes even remaining entirely concealed with Zetsu. When put in a tight spot, he fights using a poisoned blade - which contains 0.1 mg of toxin that can paralyze a whale. However, Chrollo tends to hold back if his opponent owns an ability that interests him, so that he can steal it later on.
Zeno stated that Chrollo would lose to him, but the outcome could be different if Chrollo was serious in his attempt to kill him. Chrollo is also endowed with an astounding strength of mind and willpower, even by the standards of the Troupe. Due to Kurapika's Judgement Chain, he is currently unable to use Nen.
- Superhuman Strength: Chrollo was placed 7th in an arm-wrestling competition the Troupe had. However, his rank is excellent, since Specialists are the weakest in employing Enhancer skills. He is nonetheless able to decapitate a normal human with a hand chop and pierce through skulls with an ordinary pen.
- Superhuman Speed and Superhuman Reflexes: Chrollo was able to fight Zeno and Silva at the same time, avoiding or shielding against their powerful attacks pretty well. In the 2011 anime, he disappeared and struck mortally one of the assassins hired by the Mafia without the latter noticing. He landed a hand chop on the neck of Neon Nostrade that was so fast that neither the bystanders in the hall or the people watching through the security cameras could detect his movement. As shown in the 2011 anime, Chrollo can easily catch thrown knives mid-flight.
- Superhuman Agility: Chrollo can run on the sides of buildings, and easily jump horizontally from one to another. He also deftly dodged many of Zeno's long-distance attacks while never losing sight of Silva, and quickly recovered his balance the few times he was hit.
- Genius-Level Intellect: Despite his young age, Chrollo is the leader of the Class A bounty Phantom Troupe. His plans usually go smoothly, and he has shown himself to be both knowledgeable and intuitive. He was able to trick the whole Yorknew City's Mafia into thinking that he, along with many comrades of his, had died. He managed to predict part of the "Chain user's" strategy of vengeance, though he was outsmarted by both Kurapika and Hisoka. He has complete dominion over his emotions, as demonstrated when captured by Kurapika. In the fight against the Zoldycks, Chrollo focused on stealing Zeno's ability in the midst of combat and left no openings for Silva to exploit, proving himself to be an efficient multitasker and quick-thinker. Furthermore, even when he was a child, he was proficient in at least three languages.
- Mastery of Hand to Hand Combat: Chrollo's defense is top-class: he managed to put up a good fight against the two Zoldyck assassins, using his skills at unarmed combat almost exclusively to block and dodge. He managed to confront Zeno and avoid his attacks at the last second in order to prevent Silva from exploiting his openings, keeping an eye on him the whole time. While he was mainly forced on the defensive during that fight, he has also shown incredible offensive abilities, such as when he knocked Neon out. In fact, his chop was so fast that it would have beheaded her if not for his perfect control of his movement.
- Proficient Weapon Specialism: Chrollo defeated and killed a few skilled Nen users wielding just a normal pen. He was able to injure Silva's arm with a Ben's knife (the sole injury he could inflict in the triple confrontation), demonstrating his skills with this type of weapon.
Nen[]
Chrollo is a Specialist; his Nen type is a combination of the other five, but in a way that no normal Nen user can utilize. Despite his Nen category being the least compatible with Enhancement skills, Chrollo ranks seventh in arm wrestling in the Phantom Troupe, even above an Enhancer like Nobunaga. Furthermore, his defensive usage of an aura is so great that, despite fighting against both Silva and Zeno at the same time and taking powerful blows without managing to block them with any part of his body, he took only relatively minor damage, which did not impair his ability in combat. His talent for Nen is judged prodigious not only for his age but even by the standards of masters in the discipline. Chrollo is also very analytical, easily understanding he would be unable to guard against Zeno's superior Ryu. His Zetsu borders on perfection, and he is generally very proficient in any of the basics of Nen. Due to Kurapika's Judgement Chain, he was unable to use Nen, lest he be killed on the spot. However, the Troupe hired an exorcist and Chrollo got his Nen back. He also learned new abilities to prepare for his fight with Hisoka. He took Kortopi's ability to copy objects, and Shalnark's ability to possess people. After Shalnark and Kortopi died, it is suggested that anyone whose ability Chrollo takes will eventually die.
- Skill Hunter: Bandit's Secret: Chrollo's trademark Nen ability. This ability allows him to conjure a book titled "Bandit's Secret." He can steal another Nen ability in 4 conditions:
- Chrollo must witness the ability being used.
- Chrollo must ask questions relating to the Nen ability and the victim shall answer.
- The victim's palm must touch the handprint on the book's cover.
- All of the conditions must be met within an hour.
As soon as all conditions are met, Chrollo can access the stolen ability and turn on the page of the ability he desires. The original owner of the Nen ability is unable to use it, although only one ability can be used at a time. If the original owner dies, the Nen ability will be removed, unless the owner in question has been empowered by post-mortem Nen. Chrollo's notable stolen abilities include the Indoor Fish, Fun Fun Cloth, and The Sun and Moon.
