Charles Lee Ray, also known as the Lakeshore Strangler, or most commonly known as Chucky, is the titular main antagonist of the Child's Play franchise. He is Tiffany's ex-husband, Glen and Glenda's father, including being Andy Barclay and Jake Wheeler's arch-nemesis and former "best friend".
He is voiced and portrayed by Brad Dourif, who also portrayed Damballa in the same series. As a young adult, he was portrayed by Fiona Dourif.
Personality[]
“ | You're an abomination. An outrage against nature! You've perverted everything I've taught you and used it for evil! And you have to be stopped! | „ |
~ John Bishop to Chucky. |
Chucky is the walking and talking textbook example of a complete and utter psychopath. With a complete inability to feel guilt, empathy, sympathy, regret or remorse, Chucky is a sadistic, egotistical, temperamental and foul-mouthed individual. He also holds strong grudges against his foes and never forgets when someone has crossed him. He is a relentless hunter of victims, but if the hunting of a certain victim is slow going, he will divert his attention and murder others, sometimes if they threaten to expose him, or sometimes just for fun.
In fact, he’s proven to be a very destructive and homicidal murderer. Killing seems to be his priority to the point where he was distraught when his son, Glen, did not want to murder people and did whatever he could to corrupt him.
Chucky also has a problematic relationship with all women in general. The most prominent one is with Tiffany Valentine, who was his one-time girlfriend and later became his wife. Chucky claims he wanted an occasion to fling with her as he fell in love with Sarah. Chucky went as far as to murder Sarah's husband, so that he can have Sarah and her daughters as his family but he began to despise her for calling the cops on him and murdered her in revenge years later ironically enough it was actually Tiffany who called the cops on him and not Sarah essentially making his murders of Sarah and her family pointless.
Despite Tiffany's years of devotion to Chucky, he never fully appreciated her and even murdered her to transfer her soul into a doll to punish her for refusing to help him find a human host after he refused to marry her. Eventually, Chucky exhibited signs he does care for Tiffany much more than he lets on and actually apologized to her for "everything". Chucky admits that he does love Tiffany due to their mutual love for murder and declares her as his wife and convinces her to have sex with him while in doll form.
However, their violent natures come into conflict with each other frequently to where they try to murder each other. They still forgive each other and rekindle their relationship regardless. Although he tortures Nica by killing her family and frames her for the murders, Chucky never intended to murder her because he sought to torture her more so by possessing her body, to the point he saved her from committing suicide. Despite all of this, Chucky's love for Tiffany isn't migrating as he still abuses her and never shows any real affection towards her.
Chucky's relationship with his children is dysfunctional and mixed with awkwardness. When he learns that he is a father, Chucky faints in shock and is shocked furthermore when he sees that his child has no genitals. However, Chucky accepts his child without hesitation and declares it to be a boy, whom he names Glen. He eagerly tries to teach Glen how to murder and is dismayed when Glen has no interest in it. Chucky had little to no interest in having a daughter but when he finds out Glen has a twin sister, Glenda, Chucky was more shocked by her ruthlessness that was more than his own despite also enjoying being a heartless killer.
Chucky also possesses a sarcastic and manipulative wit and also blurts insults at the most random of times, usually for comedic measure. Apart from this, Chucky has a sexual and voluptuous fetish for monsters, being unimpressed with pictures of normal women and had to look at images from Fangoria in order to get his rocks off. However, Chucky does possess some form of morals, he has no problem with murder but is disgusted with any form of rape and sexual abuse, as he decides to murder Dr. Foley for assaulting Nica and called him diabolical (although this is a somewhat hypocritical statement, as Chucky himself has exhibited signs of being a sexual predator as well, such as when he attempted to grope Jennifer Tilly in Seed of Chucky). He even avenged Nica for her abuse with "This is for Nica" by brutally crushing her doctor's head.
Chucky also has a sense of sexism. He angrily remarks on Kyle's driving skills by saying "You goddamn women drivers!". He also doesn't hold much regard for Tiffany and has made other rude and opprobrious remarks towards other females throughout the series, even upon seeing his offspring's lack of genitals, he defiantly referred to him as a son.
As well as being an absolute monster, extreme sadist, egotistical hypocrite and a dangerous psychopath, he is also shown to be quite cowardly. An example of this is when Andy was about to set him on fire, he tried pleading with him saying they were friends till the end with Andy exclaiming "This is the end, Friend" & another example of this is in the end of Curse Of Chucky when Andy points a shotgun, resulting in Chucky saying "Andy!" in a cowardly way, which does nothing to save him.
Overall, people consider Chucky to be one of the vilest serial killers and for good reasons. Not only does he take sadistic pleasure in murdering others, but he lacks any redeeming traits that stick. Even when the series became more comedic, he retained his lack of regard for anything other than his own blood lust and shredded any compassion he had towards his family.
Appearance[]
Throughout the series, Chucky has gone through changes to his appearance. As Charles Lee Ray, he’s tall and somewhat slender. He also has long brown hair and blue eyes. When becoming a doll, Chucky is about 2'5", has red hair, blue eyes and freckles. His attire is a red, green and blue striped shirt with blue overalls with the "Good Guy" logo on the front.
In the first three films as a doll, Chucky's appearance stays consistent although some minor changes were seen. In Child's Play, as Chucky stays in the doll longer, he starts to develop human like physical traits, with bushy eyebrows and a receding hairline. At the film's climax, Chucky gets burned alive, resulting in his skin turning into a dark black, most of his hair missing, and his lips are burned off. His endoskeleton is also shown in his fingers. In Child's Play 2, Chucky loses his hand while chasing Andy and his foster sister Kyle, and then painfully inserting a knife into where his hand was. In Child's Play 3 at the film's climax, Chucky gets half his face sliced off by a reaper prop scythe, revealing the muscle under his skin.
However in Bride of Chucky, Chucky has a major physical change. After his ex-girlfriend later wife Tiffany fixed and stitched him up after he got sliced up in Child's Play 3, his face has large scars, which would be his most iconic look. His eyelids on his right eye are bloodied, and a piece of metal from his head is showing. His clothing is tattered and also has some blood on it. In Seed of Chucky, Chucky's hair is brighter, and also appears to be longer.
In Curse of Chucky, Chucky's appearance is once again altered. His hair has a darker shade of red, though this time it's straightened, his overalls are darkened and his skin is paler. His most noticeable change is that Chucky's scars are now absent, though later in the movie Chucky reveals that they were covered up by fake skin, which is removed.
Cult of Chucky also alters his look. The original Chucky is missing a chunk of his right side of his face from being shot by Andy with a shotgun, and Andy chained his head to a board. Unbeknownst to Andy, Chucky has used a voodoo spell so he could awaken more Good Guy dolls he could be in. These Good Guy dolls appear chubbier, and have wider necks. One doll has a singed hand from it being burned by Dr. Foley. Another is missing an arm and a shoe and is dirtied from being nearly buried.
A 3rd has a buzz-cut like haircut, referencing Sergeant Botnick from Child's Play 3, which Chucky hates a lot.

Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
Despite his small size and structure, Chucky has the strength and speed of a full grown human adult. He is able to easily restrain and kill people over three times his size with little to no difficulty. He can also wield many varying types of weaponry with no problem at all. Chucky is also very intelligent, capable of planning out complex traps, scenarios, and escaping from many situations. Chucky also knows voodoo magic and techniques taught to him by John Bishop (before becoming a doll and before John knew he was evil).
Perhaps Chucky's most dangerous power of all is his ability to cheat at death, as seemingly nothing can actually stop him permanently, thus Chucky can be considered immortal. While Chucky can indeed be harmed and killed, it never lasts as he always seems able to find some way to come back (even through outside help). Chucky seems to have great accuracy also; for instance, he's able to throw his knife from considerable distances and is able to hit his target almost completely on point. In Cult of Chucky, he gains the ability to possess multiple bodies, including multiple Chucky dolls. As a doll, Chucky has the natural ability to pose as a regular doll, and in addition to that, he can also talk in a child-like voice. If Chucky's physical body is destroyed he can keep fighting as a spirit which is completely indestructible unless Chucky sacrifices himself. Also, Chucky's spirit can move objects with telekinesis, manifest blood out of any hole he pleases, he can mess with electronics, appear invisible to whoever he pleases, and he can possess others although the person have to have their soul outside their body for this to work
Weaknesses[]
Chucky isn't without his flaws, as he is known to be very impatient and rather arrogant. Chucky's Voodoo abilities only work under specific circumstances and have requirements for them to work. Despite being a doll, he has spent so long in his doll body that he has turned anatomically human. Chucky can also bleed and feel pain just like a normal human and can be easily overpowered, due to be around the same height as a young child. Therefore, those who are stronger than him or can adapt to his small size could prove to be his match.
While he can split his souls to possess multiple dolls, he can't possess any other kinds of dolls, beside the Good Guy doll due to the requirement of the spell demand similar vassals, furthermore there is a limit to how many times he can splinter his soul. Furthermore, despite the fact that he can possess human, he has to have a full soul to fully control a person since it is shown that Nica still be able to briefly regain her body after the fragment of Chucky's soul possesses her. It is also revealed, the soul-splitting spell causes Chucky's soul fragments to gain individuality, which causes Chucky-possessed dolls as well as human to sometime get into disagreement and can potentially hinder each other. This fact is clearly shown in one Chucky doll called Colonel Chucky who killed other Chucky dolls to maintain it power and prevent other from overthrowing his role as killer. If any of the possessed Chucky doll is destroyed, the soul fragment within the doll will be destroyed as well, showing that there is a limit of how much souls Chucky can split in the long run.
The TV series also reveals that since Voodoo can be considered to be a dark art of a Pagan God, in this case is Damballa, all Chucky dolls are shown to be burnt by holy water and vulnerable to exorcism. In term of exorcism, the possessed soul or soul fragment of Charles Lee Ray can be thrown out of the possessed dolls or a person during exorcism but its will try to seek a human host or an object-like dolls to possess. If a human resists possession, the human host can be killed by the soul fragment or the full soul of Charles Lee Ray through the self-destruction of the soul, which claims the live of both the host and the soul fragment or the full soul. This is shown when the soul of Scout Chucky tries to possess Father Bryce after he successfully exorcism him from the doll only for Father Bryce to resist with all his might, forcing Scout Chucky to self-destruct his own soul to kill Father Bryce by exploding him into pieces.
Not only that, but Chucky has begun aging at an accelerated rate as a side-effect of being involved in the exorcrism. And as a result, Damballa has abandoned him, thereby losing his ability to move about through possession, meaning that if Chucky is killed this time, he will die permanently.
Furthermore, Chucky also seems to not realize that he has made a lot of enemies over the years, not limiting to Andy and he always underestimates his former victims, who escape his murder attempt. This fact makes him foolishly let Andy live at the end of Cult of Chucky, instead of killing Andy for good, thinking Andy can't give him trouble. As the result, it is highly possible that his arrogance would eventually lead to his downfall if all his victims band together to finish him off for good. This is clearly shown in the TV series that most of the possessed Good Guy Dolls are being hunted down easily by Andy and Kyle due to their experience with him. In fact, due to how ruthless and effective Andy and Kyle have become in foiling him, Chucky often tries his worst not to get him and Tiffany under their radar.

Trivia[]
- During Child's Play, Brad Dourif was voicing Chucky being burnt by fire when his real-life daughter Fiona Dourif, the same who would later play Nica Pierce in some of the film's sequels and the 6 year old, came into the recording room. Hearing her father's acting of screaming in agony, she rushed out of the room very shocked and frightened. Brad Dourif had to stop his session to calm his daughter down.
- Chucky made a cameo appearance in the 2017 anime TV series Love Tyrant.
- A tie-in novelization to the second film was later written by Matthew J. Costello. The author added in some of his own plot scenes exclusive to the novel such as revealing Chucky's backstory. Chucky is characterized to have an absent father and his abusive mother being a dwarf. Chucky got teased a lot because of this and later strangled his mother to death. Also, Chucky was put in special classes when he was a kid.
- However, this backstory has since been contradicted by the Chucky television series, which depicts Charles to have grown up with a loving family but posessing a sadistic personality disorder no one was aware of, resulting in him killing his mother just to please a serial killer who had just murdered his father. It's likely that Child's Play creator Don Mancini was either unaware of Costello's novel or simply decided to retcon Chucky's origins.
