Chumsley is the main antagonist of DreamWorks’ 50th live action/animated hybrid feature film Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie, the film adaptation of the Netflix preschool series Gabby's Dollhouse.
He is a stuffed cat who wants to have all the fun that he can have, but was abandoned by Vera many years ago until CatRat found him in a drawer and took him to the dollhouse. He is also the second former arch-nemesis of the titular Gabby.
He is voiced by Jason Mantzoukas, who also played Nadal in The Dictator, Steelbeak in DuckTales (2017), Jay Bilzerian in Big Mouth, Scarecrow in The Lego Batman Movie, and Mr. Ross in Regular Show: The Movie.
Biography[]
Long ago, Chumsley used to be a plush toy who was brought to life by magic from the love of a young Vera. Vera and Chumsley used to play together all the time, but as Vera got older, Chumsley became forgotten and was put away and left in a drawer by her.
Personality[]
At his debut, Chumsley appeared to be happy-go-lucky, nice and playful who loves having fun with the Poppers and the rest of the Gabby Cats, but later in the film, it is revealed that Chumsley is a serious, threatening and very sinister plush that is very traumatized by his abandonment and vows never to go through the same event again, becoming aggressive and making the Gabby Cats physically suffer, even at the expense of using too much magic. In the climax of the film, Vera reunites with him and reconciles, deciding to never forget him again and play together just like when they were younger, making him heartfelt and friendly again, giving hugs to his owner.
Physical Appearance[]
Chumsley is an orange plush cat with white fur in his paws and belly, white muzzle with pink whiskers, pink eyebrows, pointy ears with pink triangles, lime green eyes and a long tail. He wears a light blue bow tie around his neck.
In the climax in Sweet Mountain. Chumsley wears a light blue beanie with a pink bobble on his top and blue mittens.
Biography[]
Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie[]
Chumsley first appears as a plush cat after Vera puts CatRat in the same drawer that he was in, while also putting MerCat in her aquarium, Kitty Fairy in her garden and Cakey, Baby Box and DJ Catnip in her purse after she took Gabby's Dollhouse back to her home. CatRat later brings Chumsley back to life and the two would leave the drawer and head to the dollhouse.
Gabby, determined to save her dollhouse, turns small, along with Pandy and is sent to Vera's home where the dollhouse is. Gabby finds out the Gabby cats are missing, but CatRat, and meets Chumsley, who is playing around at Cakey's kitchen along with The Poppers. Chumsley tells Gabby that her friends are in trouble as Vera sees Gabby's friends as collectibles and doesn't want to play with them.
Gabby orders CatRat to stay in case the Gabby cats return while Chumsley suggest that he can help with Gabby as well, Gabby agrees and tells Chumsley to keep CatRat company. Gabby and Pandy find MerCat in Vera's aquarium, Kitty Fairy in Vera's garden and Cakey, Baby Box and DJ Catnip in Vera's purse, just before Vera arrived to find out that they were gone.
Gabby, Pandy, Cakey, Baby Box and DJ Catnip head back to the dollhouse to find out that Chumsley is causing chaos. Chumsley then shares his story of how a young Vera used to play with him, but got older over time and left him in her drawer. Afterwards, thinking that Gabby is exactly like Vera and not wanting to go back to the drawer, Chumsley sends Gabby, Pandy, and the Gabby cats out of the dollhouse, boarding up the windows, locking them out and stealing ownership of the dollhouse. And afterwards, decides to make a cake with The Poppers.
Unbeknownst to Chumsley, Pandy, Carlita and DJ Catnip head to grab Gigi, while CatRat unlocks the door and the team enter the dollhouse to stop Chumsley. As Gabby is about to pinch her cat ears, Chumsley steals them, and as Gabby gives chase, Chumsley belittles her, telling her that she'll stop playing when she gets older, causing the dollhouse to corrupt. As Gabby makes her way back to the kitchen, she finds Chumsley telling her friends about his belittling comments and leaves the dollhouse upset. When Baby Box finds her, Gabby tearfully tells Baby Box that she's scared of growing up, the latter comforts her, and gives Gabby her cat ears back after presumably fighting Chumsley to get them back. Gabby and Baby Box head to the dollhouse to find that Chumsley was making a cake with every ingredient that he could find.
At the same time, Carlita returns with Pandy, DJ Catnip and Gigi. Gabby reunites with her grandma and tells her about what happened and what Chumsley had said, Gigi tells Gabby that just because someone gets old doesn't that they can stop having fun. Gabby, Pandy, Gigi and the Gabby Cats then realize that Chumsley, who was trying to make a cake, had accidentally created a portal because he was using too much magic. Gabby then has an idea. So Gigi gives Gabby her ears and Gabby heads off. Gabby becomes big again, intervening Vera from trying to relax. Gabby and Vera turn small, where Vera meets Gigi and the Gabby cats. Gabby, Pandy, Gigi, Vera and the Gabby Cats enter Cakey's kitchen, finding the portal that Chumsley created, which sucks Gabby, Vera, Cakey, and Chumsley into a world made out of sweets named Sweet Mountain while leaving the others behind.
In Sweet Mountain, Gabby, Vera and Cakey spot Chumsley's paw prints, and ride cookies shaped like animals to catch up with Chumsley. They soon spot him and try to catch up to him, when suddenly, gummy worms erupt from the candy grounds, carrying the three, and Chumsley manages to get away. Gabby, Cakey and Vera make their way up the mountain where Chumsley was, but then, the ground breaks down, causing Gabby, Cakey and Vera to fall into a river, in which they float on a donut. As they make their way down the river, Gabby and Vera talk as they floated along. With Vera talking to Gabby about growing up, while Gabby tells Vera that just because she's grown up, that doesn't mean she can't have fun. Just then, a friendly cookie monster named Cookie Bobby, who Cakey met during their conversation, throws Gabby, Cakey and Vera to safety to avoid getting swept away into a whirlpool.
Meanwhile, Chumsley, not wanting to go back to the drawer just to be forgotten, crosses a rickety bridge made with sweets. Gabby, Vera and Cakey soon catch up to him, but before Vera is able to reconcile with Chumsley, he destroys the bridge out of spite but gets in danger in the process. At the same time, the magic from the dollhouse begins fading away, causing the world to start collapsing. Gabby tells Vera that she can save Chumsley. Taking Gabby's advice and remembering the fun times from her past, Vera and Chumsley save each other and reconcile, with Vera telling Chumsley that he doesn't need Gabby Dollhouse to have fun and that's what she there for. Chumsley then realizes the error of his ways and Gabby, Cakey, Vera, Chumsley and Cookie Bobby make their way back to the dollhouse
Meanwhile, Pandy, Gigi and the Gabby Cats were in the kitchen, hoping that Gabby would come back. Just then, Gabby, Cakey, Vera, Chumsley and Cookie Bobby arrive back and the magic of the dollhouse is restored. Vera then thanks Gabby for helping her seeing that she can still have fun and promises Chumsley that she won't forget about him. She then hands back Gigi's ears and Vera and Chumsley fly out of the dollhouse, at the same time, a balloon shaped like a cat inflates from the dollhouse, lifting it up as it flies over Cat Francisco and back to Gigi's home.
Chumsley is last seen having fun with Vera and the Kitty Rangers, having fun like they used to.
