The Church of Jeremiah, also known as the Cult of Jeremiah, is an underground cult of anarchism and chaos believers who worship Jeremiah Valeska as their god and messiah, they were build by Jeremiah to replace The Cult of Jerome and to achieve all his cruel goals against Bruce Wayne and Gotham.

Cult was dedicated to follow Jeremiah C. Valeska during No Man's Land and was buided and lead by the first and most devoted worshiper, Ecco.

At some point after No Man's Land, The Church of Jeremiah Valeska is formed and Ecco becomes their leader, working under the orders of Jeremiah. They made their headquarters in the Old Town Church located in an unnamed area of Gotham City that was classified as The Dark Zone.

No Man's Land

  • Why was The Cult/Church of Jeremiah Valeska formed?

During the events before of season 5, Jeremiah had the idea of recreating the worst day of Bruce's life, to achieve that goal, he had to create a tunnel that would take him to Wayne Manor. To achieve that goal, Jeremiah made Ecco summon people who showed some kind of adoration towards him, so the rumor of a way to get closer to Jeremiah spread, until Valeska ended up having a very wide variety of followers. . And he also obtained slaves, who were not even aware that they served him.

Year Zero At the end of this episode, we meet Will Thomas, who arrived at the GCPD from beyond the train station, having traversed six sectors to get there. The message he brought was:

"My brothers and sisters.. they killing us"

Trespassers

Day 88: Gordon and Bullock discover a runaway boy who claims to have been a slave to a band of outlaws who intend to return to the mainland. (Jeremiah's followers tunneling for him) Gordon and Bullock track down the gang, the Soothsayers, and rescue all the children, who are sent to safety.

Penguin Our Hero

Day 95: Looking for Jeremiah, Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle travel to the Dark Zone and stumble upon the Church during one of their recruiting sessions. Ecco dons her Mummer mask and a red and black robe and preaches to the people who wish to become followers. Bruce and Selina ponder about her identity, as it is concealed by the mask. Several people pledge themselves and Ecco tells them to go up the stairs to perform a task to prove themselves worthy, while she orders the rest of the people present to get out. Selina pledges herself in order to get closer to Jeremiah and Ecco orders her to follow the rest of the followers. Ecco goes to the recruits and explains the rules of the task to them. Each person will get one gun and one bullet. Their task is to fire the gun into the neck of the person in front of them, while the follower behind them does the same.

Many of the followers are killed from the shot, while a few of them survive, including Selina who blocked the gun with her claw on her glove. Ecco is upset with Selina and reveals that she had previously performed the task as well, the bullet still remaining inside of her body. She also reveals that she is fully aware of who Selina is and she and Jeremiah have been keeping tabs on everything to do with Bruce.

After a showdown between Ecco and Selina, Ecco mockingly waves to Selina before walking away as Selina growls in frustration.

Ruin

The next time we see The Church of Jeremiah is while its members are helping Jeremiah with his plan to create the tunnel to Wayne Manor. Jeremiah kills Sykes, due to his complaint about his members' inability to finish the task on time.

Ecco informs Jeremiah about Selina going after him, while they waltz, after that, she takes some followers with the intention of clearing the way for Kyle.

Jeremiah would be relaxed and totally "off guard" as he encourages his followers not to give up despite the precarious circumstances. Selina would catch up to Jeremiah and stab him with a knife several times, apparently killing him. Given this, Jeremiah's followers react with anger and attack Selina, and she is rescued by Bruce and Alfred who had followed her to prevent her from getting blood on her hands.

13 Stitches

After the tunnel has been completed, Ecco along with some other members of the Church go in search of Jeremiah (who had survived Selina's stitches) to inform him about the progress of their plan, then, Jeremiah would follow. Ecco who guides him to Wayne Manor, where a doctor was waiting for The Joker to show him the result of the creation of Bruce's false parents.

Ace Chemicals

The activities of the Church of Jeremiah seem to have stopped during the realization of their Master's master plan, We can count the Chessmen as members of the Church, since they helped in the mass manufacturing of Jeremiah's special gas, even though they have been mind controlled.

The Beginning

In the series finale, more than 10 years after the events of No Man's Land, there is a possibility that up to that point there are still people loyal to Jeremiah's will, despite this, it is clear that the group is not as powerful as it had once been, therefore, while there may be traces of it, it is safe to say that the Church of Jeremiah is mostly dissolved. This, however, does not mean that he cannot return in the future of the Hellerverse story.

Trivia

  • The Joker has inspired various cults in the comic books, an example being the League of Smiles and his obsessive teenage follower Duela Dent.
  • They may also be a nod to the Joker Gang of Arkhamverse
  • The Church of Jeremiah was already present from day 88 of No Man's Land, and was the behind-the-scenes antagonist at the end of the first episode of the season, and is a much more direct antagonist in the second episode through the Soothsayers.
  • The Cult of Jeremiah at its top during more of 3 months aprox, but, because of Jeremiah's influence, it's sure to say that the Chrurch of Jeremiah has not disapair completly.
  • The fact that they decided to base themselves in a church is a reference to Arkham City, as The Joker did the same.
  • The fact that Jeremiah prefered a Church ,instead of just a Cult, highlights his god complex, as well the Ecco's extreme worship for him. There are even pictures representing Jeremiah as Jesus The Christ of Bible.
  • This could be a reference to the own name of Jeremiah, that means: Yahweh loosens", or " Yahweh will raise", or "God is high".
