The Church of the Saved, also calling themselves "The Church", is a modern-day American apostolic cult organization of "grass-roots" Christian fundamentalists founded and led by the Satanic Communist mutant preacher called "The Rev", and they are one of many villainous factions in the Marvel Comics universe.
This church group hails from their humble beginnings in Samuel "Sammy" Smith's former hometown of Terre Haute in Indiana, though they know nothing of The Rev being born a mutant which is the true source of his uncanny ability to heal virtually any wounds and not God behind that very power, they now live and operate in the Bedford–Stuyvesant neighborhood district of Brooklyn, New York. He amassed his huge following because of his gift that his disciples believed to not heal the ill and the injured, also possibly raise the dead. He often preached that the United States of America was a condemned country which he calls the "Great Sodom" as if it was no different than the doomed Biblical twin cities of Sodom and Gomorrah themselves due to the seemingly rampant amount of political fascism and ethnic bigotry within the U.S., and told his followers they would one day create their own paradise in the South American nation of Dutch Guiana, a brand-new community by the name of Smithtown.
Local New York citizen Ray White told the Punisher about "The Church", and how his wife was enrolled with them. The Punisher decided to go undercover and learn things about the cult. As a former Vietnam War Marine veteran "Joe Rainey", he was introduced to cult member Byron Gresham and later the esteemed Reverend Samuel "Sammy" Smith, the man called "The Rev" who runs the Church of the Saved. The Reverend sent "Joe" on a mission with Gresham and Keena to bring down a man who about to make a documentary on the Church of the Saved. Byron Gresham and Keena were sent alongside "Joe" on the mission. Byron was wounded by the man, and "Joe" was shot by the man as well, but managed to kill the man, and was taken to the Reverend by Keena. The Rev saved him, and accepted him as a new member of the organization, introducing him to Vicki White, another cult member.
The Rev told the revived "Joe Rainey" that the Church of the Saved was about to leave the US and to go to Dutch Guiana. Later "Joe" left the Church to watch the documentary he found at the man's apartment, and hid from The Reverend. On the tap, he saw pictures of The Reverend killing "Brother" Homer for his own reason of seeing and protecting his daughter despite his faith in the Church of the Saved themselves.
