Villain Overview

I'm not going to scold you for your lies. Rather if anyone should accuse you of lying... I would never forgive them. If anything, I want to applaud you... for doing your best all by yourself these past three years. You don't have to lie anymore. Because, you see... I've come back.
~ True Ciel to his brother.

Ciel Phantomhive, also better known as "Ciel Phantomhive's Elder Twin" to differentiate him from his brother, is one of the two main antagonists (alongside the Undertaker) of the Black Butler manga/anime franchise.

He is the true head of the Phantomhive house and Elizabeth Midford's original fiancé. His brother, the series protagonist, took on his identity after Ciel was ritually sacrificed to summon Sebastian Michaelis. The Twin was eventually resurrected as a perfected Bizarre Doll by The Undertaker and reclaimed his birthright.

Biography[]

Ciel and his brother were born to Vincent and Rachel Phantomhive on December 14, 1875, being a few minutes older than his brother. They were close despite their differences in personality and his younger brother's asthma.

As the heir to the Phantomhive family, he was trained by his aunt Franchise into fencing. He and his brother were kidnapped by a cult and the elder Ciel was sacrificed to summon Sebastian. The younger brother named himself Ciel and decided to burn the place and corpses so no one would know that Ciel's brother would impersonate him however Undertaker managed to save his corpse and sometime later would eventually revive him.

In the Blue Cult arc, the true Ciel returned and the current Ciel and Sebastion were shocked to see him alive again. Although the servants have their doubts Sebastion eventually confirmed that the other Ciel was indeed the true Ciel and that the Ciel they have been following was his twin brother. Tanaka knew and was planning on taking it to the grave but now would be pointless. The real Ciel was not angry at his brother for lying to everyone and tells him that he no longer needs to since he is back.

Trivia[]

  • Despite being brought back to life by the Undertaker, true Ciel is still an undead Bizarre Doll.
    • He has no soul (literally)
    • He needs constant chelation and infusions of blood to function.
      • His body cannot produce its own blood from bone marrow anymore.
    • Even if he was preserved to prevent decomposition by the Undertaker, Ciel cannot heal from injuries; meaning he will be in constant danger of becoming irreparably mangled.
  • His presence had confirmed the well-known "Two Ciels" theory. The said theory was formed because of the presence of an extra Phantomhive tombstone (besides the tombstones of Ciel and his parents) shown in Elizabeth's flashbacks, which occurred during the Luxury Liner arc and its 2017 anime film adaptation Black Butler: Book of Atlantic.
    • Multiple contradicting flashbacks to Sebastion's summoning also was proof; it was stated a sacrifice/murder was needed to summon him. However, fake Ciel was also implied to be a live offering to entice a demon to appearing; rather than Ciel being offered/killed to do so.
    • In addition to that, in the said flashback, Elizabeth also described Ciel as a person who often smiles until the fire occurred. It contrasts the protagonist who seldom smiles. Although, Elizabeth believed he was traumatized and tried to keep his smile by pretending to be childish. However, after True Ciel's presence, this description suggested otherwise.
    • Likewise, Elizabeth was always loyally clingy to Ciel, stating she had found her "radiance" and wouldn't leave it; at the time, Ciel was going by by codename Lord Sirius.
    • The extra tombstone could have initially been a mistake on the author's part, or the implication a grandparent died as well; the Undertaker is shown crying over Claudia Phantomhive (Ciel's grandmother).
    • During the Emerald Witch arc, fake Ciel's mind was briefly damaged by mustard gas, making him hallucinate the real Ciel as comfort; at the time, fans took this as representing the past and current Ciel (the pure kid and the traumatized Earl).
    • At the start of the Blue Cult Arc, a sleeping Ciel is visited by the Undertaker to take medication; however, fake Ciel never mentions this nor does Sebastion ever mention encountering the Undertaker.
    • Violet Wolfe had met "Lord Sirius" and had been giving more blood than usual; hence why absolutely freaked out upon seeing the fake Ciel (he thought it was Lord Sirius there to drain him to death).
  • It is widely speculated that the true Ciel is the murderer of Agni.
    • Evidence: Soma was friendly and familiar with the assailant; plus he slapped fake Ciel in a rage. He even tells Sieglinde that Ciel was involved.
