You are fearless. You will defeat anyone who stands in your way. A warrior from the northern kingdom heard of the giant and vowed to slay him. He painted tatau on his body and took power from the land of the dead. And when he was ready, he walked the path of the lotus pond. The giant rose from the still waters. You are strong. Powerful. Fight! And the warrior raised his dagger. He cut the giant's head clean off it's body. The skull of the giant fell to earth and became our island. The descendants of the warrior became the Rakyat, our people.
~ Citra to Jason Brody.
You won.
~ Citra to Jason upon killing him (determinant).

Citra Talugmai-Montenegro is the overarching antagonist of the 2012 first person shooter video game Far Cry 3, and the main antagonist of the Far Cry 6 DLC - Vaas: Insanity. She is the mentally unstable and deeply fanatical leader of the Rakyat and the older sister of Vaas Montenegro.

She was voiced by Faye Kingslee. In Vaas: Insanity her distorted monstrous vision is voiced by Jess Salgueiro.

Biography[]

Overview[]

While quite unpleasant at times, she does not show any signs of really being a villain until the very end of the game, where she tries to make Jason Brody kill his friends and join her in order to quote "Complete the path of becoming the ultimate warrior". The player can either obey her and join her and the tribe or defy her and save your friends.

Early Life[]

Citra Talugmai was born on Rook Island alongside her brother Vaas, and grew up learning of the Rakyat traditions instead of Vaas who was often skeptical of them. During their childhood, Citra remained close to Vaas, but constantly chastised him for not caring about the Rakyat stories or their history. Into adulthood, Citra became the tribe leader of the Rakyat, and started to influence Vaas into killing others in her name. Due to Citra's manipulation, Vaas became more unstable and started to turn to drugs and later became a pirate under the leadership of Hoyt Volker. She would observe his decline into madness, and attempted to put him back on the path of becoming her warrior to no avail. Seeing him as a lost cause, Citra and Vaas became enemies as he abandoned his Rakyat traditions, and Talugmai continued to find a new warrior to lead the tribe.

Far Cry 3[]

When Jason Brody survives his encounter with Vaas, he is assisted by Dennis Rogers in adjusting to the island so he can save his brother and friends. Though only wanting to save them, Jason agrees to meet with Citra so he can become strong enough, and she orders him to find the silver dragon blade. Once he returns with the blade, she starts to trust him more after learning that he killed one of Hoyt's associates, Buck Hughes. Afterward, she explains the legend of how the island was formed, and gives Brody a hallucinogen to fight the ink monster from the tale. She has sex with him during his drug-induced trip, and witnessed him give a speech to her warriors on stopping Vaas and leading the Rakyat to glory.

Jason succeeds in killing Vaas at his compound, and Citra retrives Brody and explains that though Vaas was a monster, his fall into madness came from Hoyt. Brody then tells Citra that he will kill Hoyt, and goes on to the other side of the island to Volker's compound to infiltrate his privateers. When Citra and Dennis learn that Jason intends on rescuing his brother Riley, they decide to kidnap his friends so they can break his personal ties to become the ultimate warrior. When Jason arrives to the temple to save them, Citra drugs him once again before handing him the silver dragon blade to kill his girlfriend Liza.

Fate[]

If the player chooses to remain on the island, Jason slits his girlfriends throat along with his friends and joins Citra. The scene then cuts to the two having sex in a ritual when Citra suddenly stabs Jason when they finish as a part of said ritual, saying she that he is a warrior and should die a warrior, and that their child will become the ruler of the Rakyat, as Jason lays bleeding to death she whispers to him before he dies - "You Won".

If the player chooses the latter, however, she desperately tries to convince him to change his mind proclaiming that she loves him and that he will go back to being nothing and will stop being a warrior if he leaves the island with his friends, this only shows her deep obsession and fanatical love for him.

Dennis Rodgers then comes and attempts to stab Jason out of anger for what he considers an insult and outrage to the tribe and to Citra, but in an act of what one could consider true love Citra jumps in the way and takes the hit in order to save Jason's life, leaving her fatally wounded with a knife in her stomach. As she lay dying in Jason's arms she says she loves him and begs him to not leave her, Jason says "I'm sorry" and with that she perishes, leaving Dennis shocked and mortified by what he had just done.

Far Cry 6 Vaas: Insanity[]

Citra appears as the main antagonist of the story, being a figment of Vaas' imagination that "helps" try to escape his mind. Upon waking in his landscape, the figment demands Vaas to find a three pieces of the silver dragon blade to become her warrior. During the course of the DLC, Citra constantly torments him, often ranting about Vaas' failures and hoping that he learns from his past mistakes while the player learns that Citra was also a reason of Vaas' mental decline. Additionally, she appears as an enemy in the landscape on harder mind levels, and is a boss in the final mission "Birthright", where she attempts to kill Vaas to no avail.

Quotes[]

Once, long ago. There was a lotus pond filled with clean water. The bank composed of smooth sand and the smell of blossoms moved the air. But a giant lived beneath the pond's surface, devouring any who came to its edge. A warrior, from the northern kingdoms, heard of the giant and vowed to slay him. He painted tatau on his body and took power from the land of the dead. When he was ready, he walked the path to the lotus pond. And the giant rose from still waters, the Warrior raised his dagger. He cut the giant's head clean off its body. The skull of the giant fell to Earth and became our island... The descendants of the Warrior became the Rakyat, our people.
~ Citra explaining the story to Jason.
You are strong, powerful.
~ Citra to Jason.
You are a warrior. You live for battle. Every man you fight dies and deserves to have his life taken from him. You wear the tatau. You feel the jungle around you. You are Rakyat!
~ Citra to Jason.

Trivia[]

  • Her name means "image", and is a very common name in Indonesia and Malaysia.
  • Due to the many references to Alice in Wonderland, Citra is possibly based on the Caterpillar, as both are mentors of their stories' main protagonist.
  • It is quite strange that Vaas and Citra have different surnames, despite the fact that they are brother and sister. Either Citra changed her last name, or Vaas changed it in order to finally sever all ties with Citra.
