Claire Shannon is the main protagonist of the 2017 supernatural horror movie Wish Upon.
She was portrayed by Joey King, who also played young Talia al Ghul in The Dark Knight Rises, Magenta in The Flash, the Prince in Bullet Train and Poppy Prescott in Despicable Me 4.
Biography[]
Claire Shannon is a 17-year-old high school outcast, haunted by memories of witnessing her mother's suicide 10 years prior. One day, her father Johnathon finds a music box in a dumpster and gives it to her as an early birthday gift. Deciphering one of the inscriptions as "Seven wishes", Claire wishes for her tormentor Darcie Chapman to rot, resulting in Darcie being rushed to the ICU for necrotizing fasciitis. That day, Claire's dog Max and uncle dies following her second with to make Paul fall in love with her, and the relative leaves everything to Clare including his mansion through her third wish, resulting in Mrs. Deluca's death.
Claire, still can't translate on the box, consults the help of her classmate Ryan Hui and his cousin Gina. They find out that the box can grant seven wishes and when the music ends, "something" is paid. On her way home, Claire spots her father dumpster diving.
Angry and embarrassed, she makes a fourth wish for her father to stop being an embarrassing loser. Jonathan immediately has a personality shift. Soon after, Gina deciphers the meaning of the phrase which says understanding the full extent of what Ryan told her, Claire consults Meredith and June who attempt to talk her into trashing the music box. She is reluctant because that night Claire realizes that Paul has been stalking her. Horrified, she breaks up with him on the spot. The consequence starts to take effect and June almost dies after a fire bull almost crushes her, but Meredith is able to pull her to safety in time. The three hang out in the lobby of a hotel where Meredith decides to separate from the two to explore. She uses the elevator and is killed when the cable snaps.
Claire discovers that Clare's mom appears alive and well at the door, with two younger sisters. She realizes that her dad will pay the price. Claire uses her last wish to revert everything back to the day she obtained the box before suddenly snaps awake alongside her dog Max. She calls Meredith, who is alive and well, and joins her father, Jonathan, to go dumpster diving with the intention of secretly retrieving the music box and preventing her father from finding it.
She then asks Ryan to bury the box. Claire believes all is well, but she is killed when Darcie accidentally runs her over. Thus, making the music box claim her soul as it did. As Darcie and the shocked crowd look at her corpse, the camera zooms on her face before the credits roll.
Trivia[]
- Her death being run over by a car driven by Darcie would later have a similar scene in “Bullet Train” where Prince, also portrayed by Joey King, would get run over by Lemon in a stolen truck at the end of the film while proclaiming herself to be the new “White Death”.
- Due to the film’s underperformance, Claire Shannon had somewhat been an unlikeable character for fans to root for due to using seven wishes at the cost of the lives of loved ones.
- Even if Claire didn’t use the seventh wish or was close to hitting all of the wishes should she be in the fifth one, it could be likely that she may have realized its consequences even if she reversed time on the seventh wish and somewhat would move on from the deaths of her loved ones and friends and realize that the wishes she’s obtaining are making it more difficult for her and would eventually lead to death.
