“ | A lump of clay brought to life. It works as hard as it looks sad. | „ |
~ The Battle Memory. |
Claymen are a major antagonistic force in Mother 3, being primarily prominent in the first five chapters of the game. They are the hardworking muscles of the Pigmask Army.
Behaviour[]
Most Claymen are docile unless commanded otherwise. They are loyal to the army, and the army only. They are massively expendable, and treated as such by the army. At times, they'll even be destroyed for doing their jobs inefficiently. However, Claymen are mute and show little emotion aside from a sad look they each always bear. They always carry on their tasks like drones, and because of their drive they are commonly used in Pigmask invasions.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
At some point, Dr. Andonuts came up with the idea to zap clay into life. Porky Minch used this idea to put the Claymen to use as some of the army's front line troops whether this was their intent to exist or not.
Mother 3[]
Chapter 2[]
Claymen first appear in Chapter 2 of the game, where Wess and Duster come across one when they return the the Osohe Castle after it is invaded by the army. Two Pigmasks rest at the entrance of the castle alongside a powered down Clayman. Panicked when Duster and Wess come, they activate the Clayman as it mindlessly charges forth to attack the two thieves of justice. Eventually, Wess and Duster come out on top. The Pigmasks become fearful because of this, and run away. They are later scolded by Fassad.
When Duster, Kumatora, and Wess finally reach the Hummingbird Egg, the Pigmasks catch up to them as it is revealed they had plenty more Claymen than the one sent out from the start. As the Claymen try to bust down the door to the Egg of Light's room, Kumatora recklessly takes the egg in attempt to get out quick but it's soon revealed to activate a trap, causing the army to lose them.
Chapter 4[]
In Chapter 4, it is revealed that the Pigmask Army has established multiple Clayman Factories in Nowhere Islands, and not only have they established these factories but they've coerced villagers from Tazmily into working at the factories in exchange for DP and tickets to the famous Club Titiboo. Children are urged to work at these factories, as well. Lucas is no exception, as he must assist in Claymen production by luring low-power Claymen to a Pigmask to zap them back to full power. Lucas does this in exchange for tickets, so he can investigate the DCMC member who has an uncanny resemblance to Duster, Lucky.
Chapter 5[]
In Chapter 5, Duster reveals that he left the Hummingbird Egg with a broken down Clayman before meeting the DCMC. Once Lucas and Kumatora recruit him again, he takes them to where the Egg was hidden but the Clayman is soon suddenly zapped back to life. However, still being broken down it malfunctions and takes off with the Egg, intending to trash itself for being too dysfunctional. Lucas and Co. give chase, getting into various confrontations (including a stand-off with the Pork Trooper in the process) as they follow the Clayman.
The Clayman is found by a Pigmask and sent off to the garbage dump. When Lucas, Kumatora, and Duster find it, a nearby clump of clay which was once a Clayman, sprouts back to life as the Forlorn Junk Heap. The group battles with the Clayman until it is finally destroyed.
Chapter 7[]
In Chapter 7, Claymen production begins to steadily decrease as they are slowly seen less and less used by the army. Even in takeovers like Saturn Valley, there is a lack of Claymen use. The factories begin to shut down, the player can however revisit the Clayman factories. When visiting the one Lucas worked at, Mr. Brown, the owner of one of the factories, will have left a song praising Claymen production. The other factory however can still be entered yet it is barren an empty, only two Pigmasks guarding the place. The player will be overleveled by this point of the game though, and they'll likely try to run away. A Clayman assists the attack on Chupichupyoi Temple, where it tries to break in to the temple. The Masked Man acknowledges its failure to break in, as he instructs all the Pigmasks within the area to stand back before he tosses a bomb to ruthlessly destroy the Clayman.
Chapter 8[]
A lone Clayman can be seen, still working at the barren factory after Lucas pulls the final needle, seemingly accepting the worlds end.
