Clifton Franklin James is the main antagonist in the 2023 horror/comedy The Blackening. He portrays himself as a nerdy, innocent man, but in truth, he is a vengeful manipulator.
He was portrayed by Jermaine Fowler.
Biography[]
His origin and childhood is not known in the movie. All we know is his motive for the attempted killings of his former friends.
In college, Clifton was an average nerd. He also loved board games and he was good at all of them, except for Spades. Which his friends wanted to play. Because he wasn't good at the game, his friends picked on him and said "His black card was revoked". This is a reference to why he played a sadistic game to see who was the "blackest" amongst his former friends. The mocking and teasing made Clifton drink liquor for the first time, Clifton later got behind the wheel and drove, he got in a crash with a pedestrian, which ended up killing the pedestrian. Clifton was sentenced to 4 years in prison and swore to get revenge on his former friends.
He wasn't the one who was doing the killings, up until the end, it was revealed he hired two racist twin brothers, Camden and Clive Connor. They would wear a black, leather mask, which symbolizes Blackface (a racist trend of putting black paint on a white persons face to mock Black people). And they would be paid 100 dollars for every one person they killed. The twins were ultimately killed by two women in the group, Clive was stabbed with arrows and Camden was killed by his face getting smashed in by a heavy trophy. When the group gets outside, it is revealed that Clifton is the mastermind of the sadistic game, which involved them pulling a card to reveal a black person only question in a racist game board. He had a specialized belt that would be used to close and open doors when he was with people he wanted dead. Clifton, then tried to charge at one of the females in the group and they shot him with an arrow in the chest and pushed him into a well. The group also pushed something heavy into the well, but all the heavy thing hit was water, leading the group to believe Clifton survived.
