The Clowns are supporting characters in the 2019 comic book psychological thriller film Joker, the first installment of the DC Black film series.

They are a massive movement of people which wear clown masks on their faces, aiming to instigate an anarchist mutiny against the rich and the powerful population of Gotham. They were inspired by Arthur Fleck's murder against three Wall Street men on the subway.

Their mutiny eventually triggers widespread riots and causes the deaths of many rich people, including Thomas Wayne and his wife.

Biography[]

Joker[]

The Clowns' riot started after Arthur shot and killed three rich, businessmen that were assaulting him because of his uncontrollable laughter. This caused an uproar because everyone saw it as the people fighting against the rich, causing outrage against Thomas Wayne. They also attacked two detectives after fighting amongst them took place before one of the detectives shot and killed a clown, causing him to be brutally assaulted by the crowd of clowns because of what they did.

They then began rioting around Gotham City after the live murder of Murray Franklin and managed to save Arthur from the authorities and hailing him as their leader. Although there is no given explanation of what happened to the riots afterward, it's presumed the Gotham police managed to fight off and stop the riots before taking Arthur into custody, ending the Clowns organization, though it's implied a following is ongoing, praising the Joker for his rebellion.

In the two years since Arthur Fleck's arrest and incarceration in Arkham State Hospital, the height of chaos unleashed by his followers seemed to have subsided, as they had been largely committing relatively minor disturbances, such as petty theft and vandalism, although done in disturbing frequency. During Arthur's televised trial, a crowd of his admirers cheer outside the courthouse, engaging in support for him and taunts at the other crowd gathered in protest to him even being allowed a trial.

As Joker acting as his own attorney now, Arthur delivered an impassioned speech about how he was so depressed and hopeless that he wanted to "tear it all down." Two of the clowns interpreted this as a command. Days later, when Arthur was receiving his sentencing, a car bomb detonated, ripping a hole in the courthouse, seeming to kill many in attendance and maiming others (notably prosecutor Harvey Dent, who suffered disfiguring injuries to half his body). Arthur was briefly unconscious due to being knocked away by the explosion, but recovered to confusedly stumble outside through the hole caused by the blast. A man dressed as his Joker persona guided him into a taxi driven by another man in a clown mask.

As the two clowns excitedly mention how they got away with it, they also ask Arthur for the next step of the plan; since Arthur had no plans, he remained silent, which the clowns believed was him merely readjusting after the explosion. When the taxi reached gridlock, Arthur exited the car, to the confusion of the clowns. Arthur began to sprint away, with the two clowns following him; when the clowns are apprehended by newly arriving police officers, they shout that they still love "Joker."

Joker: Folie à Deux[]

Despite Arthur Fleck's incarceration at Arkham State Hospital, the Clowns continue to be active and in support of their idol. Their influence sparks protest and riots across the United States.

Two years follow Arthur Fleck's arrest, district attorney Harvey Dent wants Arthur put on trial to find him guilty and give him the death penalty for the murders he committed. Arthur ends up being put on trial, and the Clowns turn up outside the courthouse to show their support. Weeks into his trial, Arthur dismisses his "Joker" person and gives a non-guilty verdict. The Clowns target the courthouse by planting a car bomb, and two members attempt to extract a freed Arthur and get him to safety. But Arthur escapes from the car during a traffic stop, and later ends up being arrested and sent back to Arkham to await his execution.

In Arkham, Arthur is stabbed to death and killed by a deranged former idol, who is implied to continue the legacy of Joker.

Trivia[]

The Clowns may have been inspired by Cult of Jerome, Church of Jeremiah or The Jokerz from the Gotham and Batman Beyond series, in which members of the gang imitate the deceased Joker and try to continue his legacy and madness.
The Clowns are involved in two major events associated with the Batman mythology. They are responsible for the deaths of Thomas and Martha Wayne, which will lead to Bruce Wayne becoming Batman. In the sequel they are connected to the scarring of Harvey Dent, which leads to his supervillain alter-ego Two-Face.
