~ Smets to Tia Ryder

Clyde Smets also known as The Zookeeper is the main antagonist of the Criminal Minds: Evolution third season episode "The Zookeeper". Smets is a dangerous serial killer of sex workers affiliated with incarcerated career criminal Elias Voit.

Biography[]

Playtime is over.
~ Smets' other catch phrase

Smets was an employee at Hansen Mutual Insurance and a sexual deviant with fantasies of dominance involving video games. Feeling emasculated by his job, he started seeking outlets online, until he came across Voit's criminal network where Voit was recruiting violent disciples. Smets quickly gained Voit's approval, was taught all sorts of tricks and skills to kill women without leaving a trace, and even posted footage of his crimes online, amassing a serious body count and becoming one of the most dangerous offenders aligned with Voit. Smets targeted white women posting online sex services, who he lured to his house and subdued when he'd want them to participate in foreplay with him, such as erotic asphyxiation. Smets sent deepfake messages using AI software from Voit's programs to the women's families so the law wouldn't come looking for them. The women would be caged in his basement, often more than one at a time, and Smets would rape and brutalize them while dressing them in cosplay outfits evoking the video games he wanted to pervert for his own desires. Smets would torture each woman to the point of inducing Stockholm Syndrome in them all, and once he was bored with them, he killed them and disappeared their remains.

The BAU found Smets' posts through monitoring Voit's servers, so they tracked him down while trying to save the latest woman he held captive, Sabrina Traver, who was in his basement for a year and already addressing him as "slave master". By then, Smets already lured Tia Ryder to his house, acting fidgety to catch her off guard first, then choking her unconscious and holding her captive as well. He terrorized Tia by introducing Sabrina, who shaved him before Smets slashed her throat with the razor. Smets then bragged he sent deepfakes of Tia to make sure no one would look for her, and how much he enjoyed putting sex workers through hell. When his colleague Drew tipped him off about the FBI being out to arrest him, he moved to kill Tia was well, but she overpowered him. The FBI arrived and stopped Tia from killing Smets, but before they could move to arrest him, he killed himself to protect the network and avoid punishment.

Trivia[]

  • Smets is inspired by multiple real-life murderers:
    • The killers of Junko Furuta, a Japanese student who was held captive by teenage yakuza gangsters and gang-raped and tortured until she died, her family and the killers' families being told lies so she wasn't saved.
    • John Edward Robinson, a.k.a. "The Internet Slave Master", a serial killer and fraudster guilty of murdering women he lured through online ads, forging letters to their loved ones and disappearing their remains.
    • Gary Heidnik, a serial rapist and budding serial killer guilty of raping and torturing women and girls of color in his basement, killing two of them and forcing them to follow his demands.
