Joey, Marky and Dee Dee (also known as the Cockroaches) are the titular main antagonists of the French animated comedy television series, Oggy and the Cockroaches.

They are a trio consisting of JoeyMarky and Dee Dee who often cause trouble and hardship for Oggy. They can take on different rules depending on the episode whether as sadistic villain protagonists, antagonists, anti-heroes or just simply bumbling comic-reliefs.

All three cockroaches are voiced by Hugues LeBars. However, Dee Dee was given a deep-toned voice provided by Michel Elias after eating one of the special biscuits in the second series episode, Chatter Box.

History[]

Each being named after members of the punk rock band the Ramones, the cockroaches are three brothers comprising of Joey, the oldest, implied to be 21 years old, Marky, the middle child, and Dee Dee, the youngest of the three, whose ages are unknown. They live in the air condition vent of Oggy's house which they to travel to different rooms. They enjoy instigating trouble where ever they go. They have even hijacked vehicles for joyrides, such as a dump truck, train, firetruck, and planes ("Rock 'n Roll Altitude", "Panic in the Air", and "First Flight"). They additionally commit crimes willfully on a near-daily basis showing no remorse whatsoever. Like many villains, the cockroaches are sadistic, up to the point they take pleasure from seeing people suffer, whether it be physically or emotionally, examples of this are when Oggy gets beaten up by Bob, the bully of the show, or when the former tears up. In the backstory from the episodes "It's a small world", shows that they have been bullying Oggy since he was a baby, also, weirdly enough, they looked older than him.

Members[]

Joey[]

Joey is a selfish, vicious and highly sadistic individual. On a few cases, he has even sent at least one of his fellow roaches into action, so he would not have to go himself (e.g., "Mouseagator" and "Mouse Attack"). He is quite devious; possessing no qualms toward cheating ("Sports Fans") and using manipulation (e.g., the aforementioned "Fake News" which also shows that he knows how to edit videos). In addition, there is practically nothing he will not do to get his way. A good example of this is in "Don't Rock the Cradle" and "Oggy the Babysitter" when he attempted to kidnap a baby for ransom, also displaying his avarice. He is additionally revengeful and bad-tempered, sometimes seeking vengeance on Oggy out of anger merely for rubbing him the wrong way. In the cartoon's more recent seasons, Joey is sometimes shown to act harsher toward Dee Dee and Marky. He has even physically harmed them, particularly when they defy or irritate him. Joey is additionally said to metaphorically view things in black-and-white. Despite these traits, according to some official profiles, he would produce an incredibly emotive speech concerning the ultimate fate of all cockroaches if he could talk. It is also noted to canvass how victimized cockroaches will stand up and be emancipated. His end goal is said to hold sway over Oggy's household for himself and "his people."

Joey is incontestably the cleverest member of the trio who frequently cooks up various stratagems. He is the most knowledgeable of the trio when it comes to technology; e.g., constructing a robotic and alligator-like mouse in "Mouseagator" and "Mouse Attack". However, despite naturally being the smartest member of the trinity, Joey doesn't exactly know how many beans make five. A good example of this trait is in "Toy's R Oggy" and "Brain Drain" when Jack outwitted him by utilizing a stratagem similar to the one the trio used on him.

Like all cockroaches, Joey possesses a big appetite and incredibly low standards of cleanliness, as he is stated to find Oggy's house "much too clean" and is shown to be prone to making messes. He appears to be aware of the fact that he is in a cartoon, as he occasionally looks so directly at the watcher(s). In fact, he even provided a transition scene in "Beachcombers" and "Beach Havoc".

In "Oggy's Double", thanks to a certain blue moggy and his doppelgänger, Joey ended up losing his sanity. However, his insanity was never displayed again outside of this episode.

Joey is mischievous and loves stirring up trouble nearly everywhere he goes. He enjoys irritating and harshly pranking other characters, with Oggy being one of, if not his, favorite target. This in fact appears to be one of the reasons for their detestation. However, to be fair, it is worth noting that Joey's enmity with Oggy is less one-sided than what it is often believed to be. This is because Oggy has sometimes assaulted Joey without provocation, like in "Airship House", "Water Sports", and "Let's Party, Guys!" Furthermore, Oggy is equally guilty of doing some vile, sometimes beneath contempt, things to the trio. For example, he once cruelly forced them to enact the Olympic games all the while deriving sadistic pleasure in repeatedly tormenting them. Bear in mind that Oggy did this just because Joey and Dee Dee inadvertently caused him to miss watching the Olympics, as stated in the episode's summary on the official YouTube channel.

For all his flaws, Joey is not without sentiment. While he can be nasty to Dee Dee and Marky, he is shown to feel affection for them. He helped Marky without reluctance in "Marky's Tournament" and mourned when Dee Dee "died" in "The Fugitive", "Globulopolis", and "Inside Oggy", among other examples. In addition, despite being stated to hate Oggy, Joey often consorts with the cat more than his fellow cockroaches. For instance, after suffering a head injury in "Ugly, Dirty, and Good", he began believing Oggy was his father and genuinely enjoyed spending father-son activities with him. (In this state, his mentality was also reduced to that of a child's, and he did not remember Marky and Dee Dee.) Furthermore, despite eventually reverting to his old self, Joey was seen staring at Oggy with an affectionate look on his face. Once he realized that Dee Dee and Marky were watching him, he stopped staring at the cat and slapped the two in annoyance. Joey also saved Oggy from plunging to his death in "Journey to the Center of the Earth" and actually teared up after he left in "Moved Out".

Also, Joey became fascinated with soccer in "Penalty Shot" and "Soccer Fever".

Marky[]

In earlier episodes, Marky used to be as evil and active as his brothers. However, as the series continues, he has become more laid-back and apathetic, though he still enjoys hanging out with his brothers and causing troubles. This apathy may be caused by his low intelligence and laziness, so he probably can't take the slightest initiative.

He is also pretty manipulable as seen in one episode in which he is the only cockroach who gets attracted by Oggy by playing a flute, although he did brainwash Oggy once.

Marky loves dating women. When he meets a girl, he immediately became the gentlemen, losing interest for brothers (ironically, that's exactly why he and Dee Dee hated Joey when he dates a bee). He once falls in love with Oggy's doll. He starts living with her in Oggy's dollhouse and they spend much of their time by kissing, much to Oggy's anger. Oggy tries to get his doll back for several times, but unsuccessfully, as enamored Marky always defeats him. Marky and the doll even get married, causing an enraged Oggy attacks the house similar King Kong. Unfortunately, the doll then falls down and gets broken. Marky is sad at first, but then starts dating Oggy's toy robot.

Dee Dee[]

He is obsessed with eating and can eat everything, including larger animals or other things (such as hyenas, an insect and fish). He is even capable to eat while sleeping, as he once bites Oggy's tail from the sleep. On the other hand, his appetite sometimes causes problems. For example, Dee Dee once eats so much food he isn't able to move and is easily caught by Oggy.

Like Marky, he is in complete admiration of Joey and he will follow him to the end of the world. Only in some rare cases, he complains about Joey's plans. When Joey falls in love with a bee and neglects his brothers, the two beat up his girlfriend at first and then fight Joey himself. Although he usually only realizes Joey's plans without thinking, when it comes to getting some food, he appears to be very active. When The Loch Ness Monster settled in Oggy's house and ate all his food, Dee Dee becomes angry and creates a plan to get rid of it. Eventually, he is the only cockroach who actually attacks the Monster. Joey and Marky don't care about it at all, so Dee Dee's attempt ends unsuccessfully.

He shares a good chemistry with Marky, as he often spends time with him causing mayhem in a lowbrow kind-of way or just acting like comic-relief characters, although in some rare occasions, Dee Dee seems to be the straight-man of the two, for example when he provides a plan to rescue Joey, and Marky follows him.

Personalities[]

The cockroaches love stirring up trouble everywhere they go. They have even taken vehicles for joyrides, like a dump truck, train, firetruck, and planes ("Rock 'n Roll Altitude", "Panic in the Air", and "First Flight"). They additionally commit crimes willfully on a near-daily basis with no remorse whatsoever. Like numerous villains, the Cockroaches derive pleasure from seeing people suffer, whether it be physically or emotionally. It should be safe to say their favorite target is Oggy (who they also have a peculiar relationship with). The trio expresses no sympathy for the feline and becomes convulsed with laughter upon witnessing him being put through any degree of pain. On a lesser note, they are shown to be incredibly slovenly as they are prone to making messes. The Cockroaches are even stated to find Oggy's house "much too clean for their tastes." They also seem cognizant of the fact that they are in a cartoon; they sometimes look directly at the viewer(s).

The Cockroaches' goals vary from episode to episode. Sometimes, they seek to steal comestibles (particularly from a certain blue cat), but this is not out of malice; in these cases, they are just hungry and need to eat. In fact, they were so desperate for something to eat in "Oggy's Invention" that they were seen eating part of a wall and a wooden shelf. Then again, more often than not, the trio aims to ruin Oggy's life in some new cruel way; they practically live to make him suffer. In addition, they can be quite vindictive. There are even instances in which the trio has sought vengeance on Oggy simply for irritating them, rather it was intentional or not. (Though, to be fair, there are some instances in which Oggy has wronged the Cockroaches without motive; e.g., "Don't Barge In!".)

Despite their almost entirely negative history with Oggy, the Cockroaches secretly need him in their lives. In "Copy Cat" and "Oggy Robot", Oggy became so depressed that he did nothing but sit on the couch as if he was rooted to the spot. As a result, the trio grew so bored they decided to build a robotic clone of the feline which would act exactly like him. In the episode "Moving Out", the Cockroaches were initially ecstatic upon finding out that Oggy had moved out, passing it off as a joke. However, when they find out that he was truly gone, Joey and Marky burst into tears. In addition, Dee Dee and Marky insanely crushed themselves repeatedly with Oggy's fly swatter just to refresh their memories of the blue feline swatting them. When Joey discovered the location of Oggy's new home, the trio did everything in their power to reunite with him (which horribly failed).

As abrasive as the Cockroaches are, they truly care about each other ("Caviar on the House!" being the most notable example). They were also extremely happy to see their cousin visiting them in "Roachy Redneck" and "A Roachneck Cousin".
