~ Cody Hjuger attempting to rationalize his crimes |
Cody Hjuger (コーディ・ヒューガ Koodi Hyuuga) is the main antagonist of the first chapter of Tales of Crestoria and the father of Kanata Hjuger.
History[]
Chapter 1: The Wake of Sin[]
Cody Hjuger fathered the protagonist, Kanata, but it's unknown what became of his wife. In the village of Dalchia, Cody appears to be a benevolent orphanage caretaker, but he secretly uses the orphanage as a front for his child-trafficking ring, under the guise of finding them better homes. He sells the boys into slave labor, sells the girls into sex slavery, and butchers any children who fits neither role in order to sell their organs.
At one point, Cody's crimes are discovered by one of the village's swordmasters, Mibaru. In response, Cody waits for Mibaru to be wounded by a monster before capturing him and sending him to be subjected to Malcolm Sloat's horrific experiments, resulting in Mibaru being trapped in the body of a monster.
At the start of the game, Cody praises Kanata for cornering Gordon, a criminal from a neighboring village. He then falsely announces that he found an wealthy adopter for Misella. When Misella asks Kanata to visit her in their special place, Cody allows it, confident that she won't reveal the true nature of the orphanage to his son.
That night, Cody has Misella dress up in preparation for her sale, but she tries to make him promise that she will be the last child to be sold. When he refuses, Misella attempts to kill herself, but Cody's underlings restrain her. He attempts to take away her hair ornament despite its sentimental value to her, since it could lower her price, and then strikes her when she protests. Kanata, having been alerted to Cody's activities by Nash, barges into the room and defeats all of Cody's underlings.
Cody confesses the whole operation to Kanata, but then tries to convince Kanata to join and eventually take over the ring. He demands that Kanata personally sell Misella to her buyer, or if that doesn't satisfy him, cut off a piece of Misella for himself. This only serves to enrage Kanata, who picks up Misella's knife. Cody threatens to have his underlings lock Kanata up until the latter changes his mind, but Kanata kills Cody. Unfortunately, Cody's underlings are still at large and have Kanata condemned by the Vision Orbs.
Appearance[]
Cody is tall, has red eyes, and has blonde hair tied into a ponytail. He wears a dark purple robe with gold trimmings, a gray tunic with red patterns underneath that robe, and a Vision Orb necklace.
Personality[]
On the outside, Cody is very polite, encouraging, and generous towards Kanata and the other villagers, but this is only for the sake of his public image. In private, Cody is a cold and greedy man who dehumanizes the children under his care as "commodities." He deludes himself into thinking that because he took them in and fed them, he's entitled to treat them as objects to sell. He sadistically enjoys hurting his victims, as shown when he fantasizes about cutting off Misella's limbs so Kanata can keep her limbs as his possessions.
He is rather hypocritical when it comes to raising Kanata. While he initially keeps Kanata in the dark about the child-trafficking ring and raises him to be good for the sake of appearances, he psychologically projects his evil traits onto his son and believes the latter is willing to become a child-trafficker. He also believes he can lock Kanata up and force him to change his mind, showing that he views his son as a carbon copy of himself, to the point where he's in disbelief when Kanata rejects and mortally wounds him.
