My name is Colin Frater, 4th dan Black Belt at Kyoka Ten Karate. And I'm here to show you yellow bitches the taste of real combat. Fight me, with your hokey pokey Kung Fu, I dare you.
~ Colin Frater introducing himself to the Kung Fu masters.
You understand I will go all out?
~ Colin Frater preparing to fight Master Law.

Colin Frater is the secondary antagonist of the 2019 film, Ip Man 4: The Finale, the fourth and final installment in the Ip Man film series. He is a US Marine Corps karate instructor & a 4th-dan black belt in Kyokutan Karate.

He was portrayed by actor and martial artist Chris Collins.

Biography[]

Colin first appears sitting in a karate tournament in which Bruce Lee is participating in. He tells his fellow fighter that Bruce's fighting demonstration is a fixed match & is a phony.

Later, he is seen training a Black Marine Corps Troop (in which the troop surrenders & the gunny berates him) until Hartman Wu, a Staff Sergeant in the United States Marines & student of Bruce Lee, attempts to convince the Gunnery Sergeant to incorporate Chinese martial arts into their hand-to-hand combat training. Geddes agrees to do so if Hartman can beat Colin in a fight, but Colin easily manages to best Hartman.

Hartman later manages to convince the Commanding Officer to do the same and is instructed to film the Mid-Autumn Festival for research, which upsets Geddes. Geddes shows up by interrupting a training session & he privately tells Frater about what Hartman did. Geddes then instructs him to challenge all of the Chinese martial artists at the Festival. He does so by easily besting 3 grandmasters until Ip Man interferes & easily bests him. His students then carry him off the stage.

He was last seen in the Marine Corps Hospital with a broken rib with Geddes storming off seeking vengeance.

It's unknown what happened to Collin afterwards, but it's safe to assume he got fired & dishonorably discharged, just like Geddes.

Personality[]

Fight me

Frater taunting Master Law, whom he easily managed to defeat.

Frater, like his superior, share the same overly proud & openly racist behaviors against the Chinese-Americans living in San Francisco & like the Gunny; he too believes that Karate is superior to Chinese martial arts, & when asked to go to Chinatown & openly challenge all of the Chinese martial artists there, he is happy to oblige.

He is extremely confident & proud of his Karate skills, repeatedly taunting Chinese martial artists with racial & xenophobic slurs. Having bested Hartman & even three Chinese martial arts masters, he arrogantly challenges Ip Man to a fight, only to be badly beaten & defeated with relative ease.

Powers and Abilities[]

Karate mastery: Frater is very strong & proficient in karate. His combat skills are so advanced & powerful that he manage to defeat Master Law, Master Chiu, & Master Chiang. He also manage to fight Master Ip landing a few blows & knocking Ip off his feet, although he was easily bested by Ip Man after he swept Frater off his feet.

Trivia[]

  • Despite both having villainous roles, Sensei Garmadon is more responsible compared to Sensei Frater when it comes to training pupils. Either way, he is the synonym of Sensei Yang.
