Colonel Grat is the main antagonist of the Enterprise episode "Detained".
He was portrayed by the late Dean Stockwell, who also played Second Lieutenant Katell in The Twilight Zone and Tony Russo in Married to the Mob.
Biography[]
Colonel Grat was a member of the Tandaran military in charge of a detention centre. His prisoners were all Suliban, who the Tandarans were at war with. However, the prisoners were not members of the Suliban Cabal but civilians who had been living in Tandaran territory. He claimed they were there for their own safety, since they had been the target of attacks from Tandarans, but ran a harsh system with strict curfews and time in isolation for breaking rules, and had three prisoners who tried to escape killed.
Captain Archer and Ensign Mayweather were sent to the detention when they inadvertently trespassed in Tandaran territory and scanned one of their military installations. Grat initially greeted them in a friendly if bureaucratic manner, saying they would go before a magistrate in three days and be released, and contacting Enterprise to apprise them of their situation. However, things soured between them when Archer began to query the morality of the Suliban's detention, while Grat learned Archer had had contact with Silik and the Cabal and tried to get information from them. Grat had them kept at the centre instead of being sent to their hearing, giving Enterprise an excuse, although this allowed Enterprise to locate his camp.
Grat became more and more frustrated at Archer and Mayweather's lack of co-operation and had them beaten when he found Enterprise had sent them a communicator. T'Pol sent him a large amount of Enterprise's database, jamming his communications so he couldn't call in patrol vessels. Archer, Reed and Mayweather then freed the Suliban prisoners, helping them get away in ships. Grat angrily confronted Archer and Reed, arguing that the prisoners would end up working for the Cabal. Archer left him locked in one of his own cells as they made their escape.
When Archer encountered a Tandaran spy not long after, he wondered if Grat had sent her after him, but it was never confirmed either way.
