“ | Captain Snout: Bloody hell! They're pathetic, Colonel. They're scumbags. This is the worst group I've seen in a long time. Colonel Otto: Precisely, Captain Snout. They're perfect. They won't be an important loss. Or perhaps you don't know the expression "collateral damage"? |
„ |
~ Otto, declaring his men to be disposable pawns. |
“ | The colonel and high-ranking commanders are resting and eating chickens in their golden cages. | „ |
~ Private Grimaldo, complaining about Otto and his associate's hierarchy over his army. |
Colonel Otto is the main antagonist of the he 2022 French-Spanish adult animated feature film Unicorn Wars.
He was the supreme leader of the teddy bear army who set out to have all of the unicorns killed, creating the war between the teddy bears and unicorns, in order for him and his associates to maintain power.
He sends his latest recruits, deemed some of the worst he's had in a long time, out into enemy territory with the intent of finding a figurehead for his army by having the weaker soldiers killed rather brutally, and promoting the soldiers that survive.
He was voiced by Kepa Cueto, who also voiced the Sergeant from Birdboy: The Forgotten Children.
Appearance[]
Otto is an elderly, grey furred teddy bear with a wrinkled face and almond-shaped eyes with amber irises. He is usually seen wearing a dark grey uniform, with a hat that has a pink heart emblem on it, a pink belt, and three medals with rainbows as emblems. On his belt is a holster for a sword, which he uses to threaten his opponents with.
Personality[]
“ | A person without hatred can never beat the enemy, Commander Fluffy. | „ |
~ Colonel Otto, after Commander Fluffy expresses his hatred towards the unicorns and the "curse" they put on the forest. |
Otto is a cruel and oppressive leader, often starting wars and resorting to sending his soldiers out to kill off entire groups and species as a means to his end of maintaning power over the land that the bears reside in. Otto holds a strong belief that in order to defeat those he deems as enemies, he must first train his men to scorn them, indicating that he is willing to lie to and/or deceive his own soldiers in order to elimate anyone he and the other leaders deem as inferior than themselves.
Around his recruits, he gives off the impression of a calm, collected, and honorable leader that would never abandon his soldiers. This is shown to be a facade however, as despite viewing unicorns as inferior to teddy bears, he seems to look down upon his own people, especially those of a lower class. While he and his associates are eating actual food, his recruits are shown eating nothing but dingy fly-infested porridge, which is shown to be so rancid that even smelling it makes one gag. Private Grim also complains about how the soldiers have to do all that Otto and his associates had set out to do while they "relax in their golden cages". Towards the end of the movie, he also loses his composure and yells at Bluey when the former questions his authority.
He also shows little regard for the well-being of his soldiers, subjecting them to harsh and squalid conditions on the camp, and believing that the weakest soldiers are merely "collateral damage", sending them out on a suicide mission with the intent of having the weakest of the bunch killed and promoting those that survive. He also shows no concern for the fact that one of his soldiers gets badly injured in a gunpowder blast during training, also deeming this as "collateral damage".
Biography[]
Past[]
Many years ago, the bears and unicorns lived in harmony amongst all of the other animals. Eventually, a group of bears went into the ruins of a church, and found a sacred book, which enabled the bears to gain sapience and form their own civilization, and they had evolved into their current "teddy bear" form. According to their beliefs, the bears were exiled from the forest by the unicorns out of spite for their newfound knowledge. In actuality, their damage to the forest had caused the unicorns to retaliate against them leading to the war between the teddy bears and unicorns.
Some time during the war, Otto rose to power to become the colonel of the teddy bear army, hoping to maintain the bear's control over the land they had inherited by any means necessary. Around this time, a story, implied to be a rewriting of events told in the bible that the bears obtained, was created, where it is claimed that the war will end when one of the bears drink the blood of the last unicorn. It is also claimed that this bear would also be deemed as the "chosen one", and that this would reawaken a god-like being, and have it return to the forest. Otto would enforce this dogma on his army during his time of rule, using the Father as a means of preaching it as a religion.
Unicorn Wars[]
Otto is first seen overseeing his soldiers from his office, with Captain Snout commenting on their abysmal performance. Otto replies that this makes them perfect for the mission of finding the Lone Owl squad, stating that these soldiers won't be a huge loss for his army, declaring their deaths as "colatteral damage". Sergeant Ironstroke then enters his office, where Snout then details his mission. Though Ironstroke was hesitant at first, Otto threatens that refusing or failing the mission can cost him his chances of being promoted. When one of the soldiers get badly injured from mishandling gunpowder, which causes a fire amongst the camp, Otto callously refers to this as "colatteral damage" again. As Otto sends out his new recruits out into the forest, he gives a speech declaring that his soldiers carry the other teddy bear people in their hearts.
After the disappearances of Ironstroke's army, Otto sends some of his associates, Corporal Pompom, Private Peludito, and Private Grimaldo out to find them. After they find Bluey's body, washed up in a river bed, they take him to the camp's hospital. Otto, impressed by Bluey's courage, then has the idea to promote Bluey to lieutenant with the intent of turning him into an icon to inspire his soldiers to continue fighting in the war. With the new position, Bluey trains the soldiers to be the strongest. Bluey then forms a coup amongst this soldiers to overthrow Otto and the other leaders to overthrow the army, and become their new leader. As Otto argues with Bluey over the destruction of the forest to wipe out the unicorns for good, Bluey's now entrusted soldiers barge into his office, and kill him along with the other leaders.

But, I can assure you that while I'm with you, I'll never abandon you, symbolically speaking. | „ |
~ Otto's speech as the teddy bears embark on their search for the Lone Owl squad. |

Trivia[]
- A common piece of headcanon amongst fans of the film is that Otto is the grandfather of Corporal Pompom, primarily because of how Pompom is visibly traumatized after being involved in Bluey's coup to kill him, and Otto's old age.
- Despite being a colonel, Otto seems to be the highest ranking teddy bear in the movie, as evidenced by how Bluey became leader after ovethrowing him. This suggests either that the role of "colonel" has the highest merit in teddy bear society, or that his superiors could have died prior to the movie's events.
- Otto's name, which is of German origin, is a play on his role as a genocidal dictator-like figure, akin to figures such as Adolf Hitler.
- Interestingly, while he doesn't appear in a majority of promotional art, his role in the film is foreshadowed on one of its posters, where he does the Hitler salute.
- It is implied that Otto has killed many unicorns on his own accord and takes great pride in it. When Bluey tells him to "look him in the eye" whilst arguing about what the suicide mission did to him, after zooming in on his missing eye, comparable to Otto "staring into the abyss", the shot then changes to zoom in on a mounted unicorn head, implied to be a trophy of his. This also likely serves as a reflection of how Otto and everything he stood for is the actual monster his cause claimed to try and erradicate.
- Otto was created as a villainous portrayal of those that take advantage of war in order to control public opinion and maintain power over others. In Alberto Vázquez's words: "Whoever controls discourse and information, controls the war. The way they speak about fanaticism — religion is a form of control. A war with ideology is much more dangerous than a war without". [1]
