Colt Fathom, also called the "Lord of War" is a supporting antagonist of the French CGI animated superhero TV series, Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir.
He is an American billionaire and the late husband of Lady Amelie Graham de Vanily, who, prior to the events of the series, created his son Félix Fathom using the powers of the Peacock Miraculous. He would soon grow abusive and resentful towards Félix after starting to succumb to the effects of the damaged Peacock Miraculous, dominating him throughout his life up until his passing. As a result of his actions, Félix would become obsessed with freeing himself and others from anyone else's control.
Biography[]
Past[]
Prior to the events of the series, Colt became a billionaire through unknown means. Because of his wealth and status, he was arranged to marry Lady Amelie Graham de Vanily by the former's aristocratic parents; Amelie accepted to fulfill her parents' wishes. Seeking an heir, Colt tried repeatedly to have a child with Amelie, but failed each time due to her being infertile—simultaneously, his brother-in-law Gabriel and his wife Emilie were similarly unsuccessful in having a child, even with medical aid from Emilie and Amelie's parents. Despite this, one day Emilie eventually became pregnant; and, believing that his wife deserved to have a child more than her sister, Colt became enraged.
Colt later confronted Gabriel over Emilie's mysterious pregnancy, arrogantly claiming that he doesn't deserve it. Feeling sorry for her sister and brother-in-law, Emilie asked Gabriel to help them as well. Gabriel agreed, and approached Colt with a deal; in exchange for his most powerful bodyguard to protect his son—Placide I.T., better known as The Gorilla—he would hand over the Peacock Miraculous, allowing him to create his dream and control it. Although initially repulsed by the idea of using sorcery, Colt agreed to the deal. He subsequently donned the Peacock Miraculous and imbued his ring with an Amok and, from his jealousy towards Gabriel and Emilie, created a child named Félix.
Shortly after Félix was born, Colt began to suffer from a mysterious illness; the effect of using the broken Peacock Miraculous, which also began to affect Emilie. As his condition grew worse, he began to believe that it was his punishment for using sorcery. This caused him to resent Félix and view him as a monster, becoming harsh and abusive towards him. He would begin abusing his ability to control Félix through his Amok to force him to do whatever he wanted, and separate him from anything that displeased him. As he grew older, Félix came to understand that his life was linked to his father's ring. On the day of Colt's passing, Félix seized the ring for himself, granting his free will and freedom.
Legacy[]
Colt would later be put to rest at a funeral, around the same time that Emilie also succumbed to her illness and ended in a coma. Because of the proximity of these events, Gabriel kept his son Adrien from attending Colt's funeral—a decision that seemingly left Félix bitter towards the Agrestes. As a result of his father's abuse, Félix became obsessed with ensuring his own freedom, realizing that the same power that gave him life could also take it away. Thus, he also began plotting to steal the Peacock Miraculous from Gabriel; while also planning to free Adrien from him, feeling that Gabriel was just as controlling as his own father.
Ultimately, this would lead to Félix stealing Gabriel's wedding ring—where one part of Adrien's Amok resided—and later stealing all the Chinese Zodiac Miraculouses from Ladybug to trade them and the ring to Gabriel for the repaired Peacock Miraculous. Weeks later, Félix, now using the Peacock Miraculous as Argos, mentioned his father while helping Kagami Tsurugi escape from her akumatized mother; saying that he was a thousand times worse than Tomoe is to her. After this, Félix and Kagami, aided by the projector-themed Sentimonster Once Upon a Time, would relay the story of Félix's and Adrien's family origins to Marinette Dupain-Cheng, in order to explain why Félix had previously betrayed her, and that they now need Ladybug's help to stop Gabriel Agreste/Monarch, so they can all be happy.
Trivia[]
- Although first mentioned in Season 3, Colt's name was first revealed in the Season 5 episode "Multiplication", when Ladybug mentioned him while researching Félix. From that point on, Félix begins using his father's surname in the series as opposed to his mother's.
- Colt is the sixth Peacock Miraculous holder featured in the series, following Wang Fu, Emilie Agreste, Nathalie Sancouer, Gabriel Agreste/Shadow Moth and Félix Fathom/Argos. Chronologically, he is the third holder in the series to use it.
- He is also the second holder to succumb to the ill effects of the broken Peacock Miraculous, after Emilie. And, like Wang Fu and Emilie, he is one of the only Peacock Miraculous holders shown thus far that have not used it as a supervillain; although, unlike them, Colt was villainous even without powers.
- He is the only one of all the antagonists who has not interacted with Ladybug and Cat Noir, and he also does not have his own voice actor (he is dubbed by Kagami and Felix).
- His given name could possibly be a reference to Samuel Colt, the American industrialist, businessman, and inventor of the revolver.
- Alongside Hawk Moth's future counterpart, he is the only villain in the series that has never been physically seen, only portrayed by Félix and Kagami in their play.
- Based on this, it is implied that he is of Texan descent, given Félix and Kagami's depiction of him having a thick moustache and large cowboy hat; both stereotypes often associated with Texans.
- Félix and Kagami's portrayal of Colt psychically ordering his son to abandon those he cares about directly resembles Gabriel ordering Adrien to leave Marinette in "Adoration". This seemingly is meant to highlight how similar Gabriel and Colt have become in their respective treatment of their sons.
- In the episode "Evolution", if Monarch had chosen to save Emilie in the past from the damaged Peacock Miraculous in "Evolution", he indirectly would have saved Colt as well.
