If I cannot be a paladin, then whatever honor I have left will be salvaged by killing the man who has done this to-
~ Gin-Jun's last words before being killed by Miko.

Commander Gin-Jun is a villain in The Order of the Stick. He was a former commander of the Saphire guard, and wished to find and destroy the Crimson Mantle, while also using his authority to slaughter as many hobgoblinds as he can.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Not much is known about Gin-Jun's early life, from what we're shown, he started his occupation as a recruit 22 years ago prior to the events of How The Paladin Got His Scar, eventually making his way up to being the commander and leader of the Saphire Guard, taking his soldiers in "investigations" of goblinoids settlements across the country during his leadership, implanting in his soldiers minds that all hobgoblins are probably inherently evil along the way.

Start Of Darkness[]

Gin-Jun is briefly shown in the comic as one of the paladins that destroyed Redcloak's home village, given the time of the story takes place, whether or not Gin-Jun personally ordered the charge is unlikely given he was likely a young recruit.

How The Paladin Got His Scar[]

Gin-Jun is first shown having started an attack near a hobgoblin town, with his army slaughtering several hobgoblins, before being confronted by O-Chul, after either side refuses to stand down, Gin-Jun sends one of his recruits, Miko Miyazaki to fight O-Chul, intending to continue his attack and break the gates protecting the hobgoblin town, however, his plans are foiled after Saha and Pangtok cause a flod, making the road muddy and thus, to muddy for a proper charge, Gin-Jun soon orders a retreat, intending to return the following day.

At the settlement, Gin-Jun begins rambling about O-Chul and about how they've been waiting for 22 years in order to find and destroy the Crimson Mantle ever since they first had it within reach. Convinced that the Crimson Mantle is in the remaining hobgoblin town given that he has already "investigated" every other town in the country, he summons a celestial planetar and attempts to convince them to slaughter everyone in the town, to which they refuse, after the planetar also refuses to merely destroy the town, Gin-Jun convinces them to simply destroy the main gates to the town so his army can slip by and confront everyone inside.

The next morning, Gin-Jun is ready to start his invasion, before he notices O-Chul's group nearby, the two meet, and O-Chul soon challenges Gin-Jun to a duel, who quickly accepts. Once the two are ready to engage, O-Chul tries to reason with Gin-Jun that if he simply let the hobgoblin settlements alone, they'd stop retaliating, however, Gin-Jun merely grows frustrated at this and insists that O-Chul fights, his anger only growing larger when the hobgoblin leaders show up and are unaware of what the Crimson Mantle he's looking for even is. When O-Chul manages to convince the Saphire Guard to re-think the invasion, Gin-Jun, enraged, charges at O-Chul and slashes him in the face, giving him his scar.

Gin-Jun soon tries to finish off O-Chul, but is stopped by his subordinate Sato, who soon expells him from the guard alongside the fellow paladins, Gin-Jun, enraged, tries to have the planetar take him to the hobgoblin town so he can confront them himself, but the celestial refuses, given he is no longer a part of the Guard. Gin-Jun now loses the last of his composure and charges at O-Chul in a last attempt to kill him, before he meets his demise at the hands of Miko.

Aftermath[]

Even after his death, his negative influence is still felt, as his mentorship of the likes of Miko would warp her ideology for years to come, and his participation in slaughtering Redcloak's village would be a mayor factor in his path of villany.

Personality[]

[...] It is important to remember simply that hobgoblins are usually Evil, and even those that may not be so still worship an evil god, or defend an evil social order, or grow food for evil warriors, or give birth to evil children. It is enough for us to destroy their evil society, and let any who survive reflect on the path of wickedness. Never hesitate to punish evil or support for evil, or tolerance for evil.
~ Gin-Jun showing his complete xenophobia towards the hobgoblins.

At first, Gin-Jun appears to be a rutheless but still composed civil commander, however, as soon as his plans go off the rails, that facade quickly fades and his true colors begin to show, Commander Gin-Jun personifies the worst aspects of the Sapphire Guard, which is being xenophobic, and Gin-Jun cares only about two things: Finding the Crimson Mantle and kill every hobgoblin he come across, no exception to whether they are a woman, man or child. Using his position, he constantly invaded other hobgoblin towns in order to find the crimson mantle, even in the lack of proper indication that the mantle could possibly be in said towns, and even when suggested the idea the know the Mantle's exact location by, he refuses, showing he's ultimately more concerned with his crusade against the hobgoblins than his quest of finding and destroying the Crimson Mantle.

Trivia[]

  • Despite only appearing in O’Chul’s backstory (save for a cameo in Redcloak’s backstory), he can be considered one of the Order of the Stick’s most evil villains along with Xykon himself.
  • He can also be considered the Order of the Stick’s most serious villain, as he does not have any comedic moments.
