Commander Millington

Commander Millington is the secondary antagonist of the Doctor Who story "The Curse of Fenric".

He was portrayed by the late Alfred Lynch.

Biography[]

Commander AH Millington was a Naval commander in 1943, in charge of a base in Northumberland where the Ultima Project, a plan to create a decoding machine, was situated. Millington had been at school with Doctor Judson, the scientist who built the machine, and was implied to have been responsible for the accident that had left Judson confined to a wheelchair.

Millington was descended from the ancient Vikings who had brought the flask containing the essence of Fenric to England, and thus one of the "Wolves of Fenric" cursed to help bring about his release. In Millington's case, this seemed to have manifested itself with an obsession with Norse mythology. He had Judson use the Ultima Machine to translate Viking inscriptions. He was also obsessed with understanding the Nazi mind, having had his office changed into a replica of the cypher room in Berlin. He had a deep hatred and mistrust of the Britain's wartime allies, the Russians, and was setting an elaborate trap for them. He was aware a Russian commando planned to steal the core of the Ultima Machine and had it booby-trapped with a toxin that he had found in the nearby caves and was stockpiling: The toxin would be released when the machine decoded the word "love", which would be broadcast when the political situation was appropriate.

Millington took the Doctor into his confidence after learning of his knowledge of Norse mythology but was mistrustful of him and Ace. He earned Ace's hatred by demanding that one of his radio operators, Kathleen Dudman, remove her baby daughter from the base. As part of the trap, and to further Fenric's scheme, he ordered all radios disabled and all chess sets burned (since the Doctor had once used one to trap Fenric). He eventually gained the flask containing Fenric and locked two Russian soldiers in a vault with the Haemovores so they would be killed, recalling how he had once locked crewmembers in a burning engine room to save the rest of the ship.

Handing the flask over to Judson, Millington arranged for the Ultima Machine to decode the last inscriptions, leading to Fenric being released and killing and possessing Judson. Millington ordered his deputy Captain Bates to have the Doctor, Ace and Russian Captain Sorin executed by firing squad, although they were saved by Sorin's men. Millington was initially distressed when the Haemovores attacked the camp and killed many of his men, but accepted Fenric's plan to have the Ancient Haemovore release the stockpiled toxin and poison the world, seeing it as the fulfillment of the legend of the Great Serpent.

When one of the Russian commandos, Vershinin, tried to destroy the Ultima Machine, Millington shot and wounded him. Bates, having turned against his commander, tried to help the soldier, prompting Millington to prepare to kill him, calling him a traitor who didn't know who the enemy was. Before he could do so, he was shot dead by the injured Vershinin.

Trivia[]

The novelisation established that Millington had romantic feelings for Judson, and that the accident alluded to on screen that caused Judson's injury was when Millington broke Judson's back during a rugby game at school, after becoming jealous of the looks Judson was exchanging with another boy.
