Commander Seagrid is the main antagonist of the anime movie Doraemon: Nobita and the Winged Braves. He is the commander of the Bird Migration Patrolling Troops who seeks to unleash Phoenixia, a dangerous dragon-like creature, to have his revenge on humans for shooting him years ago.

He was voiced by the late Tōru Ōhira.

Appearance[]

Seagrid is an elderly, bald Birdpian vulture whose eyes have red pupils. He has a yellow beak with dark blue snout. He wears military clothes with dark-colored cape and a hat with the Bird Migration Patrolling Troops' symbol on it.

Personality[]

Before the incident, Seagrid was shown to be very serious and concerned with the birds' well-being, but already misanthropic back then. After being shot, he becomes very vengeful and determines to have his revenge on humans at all cost. This also causes him to be more cruel and ruthless, as he willingly imprisons his former friend Icarus and orders his troops to kill every human in Birdpia on sight. His troops also display a disliking for cats, meaning under his influence, they has become hated any non-Birdpian, human or not, although humans are still the biggest targets. He also shows a rude side of himself when taunting Gusuke for being unable to fly. Despite his bravado, Seagrid is ultimately a coward, as the moment Phoenixia attacks him, he tries to run away and yells for others to save him.

History[]

Past[]

Seagrid was originally a member of the Bird Migration Patrolling Troops, whose duty was to direct the birds from the human world to Birdpia so they can be saved from extinction due to humanity's pollution of the Earth. One day, when he and his comrade, the would-be legendary Icarus, were doing their duty, Icarus argued with Seagrid about going in another direction would be safer. However, when they were flying, a human shot Seagrid in the wing, injuring the latter. Angered, Seagrid vowed revenge on humans ever since and locked Icarus in jail, causing the latter to be believed to be a mere myth rather than an actual person over time. After becoming the Bird Migration Patrolling Troops' commander, Seagrid instilled the order of executing any human caught in Birdpia on sight. It's also implied that he once worked with Professor Hou, who he has asked to sign the treaty of committing a massacre on humanity multiple times, but refuses every time.

Doraemon: Nobita and the Winged Braves[]

Seagrid first appears when his troops has recently captured Suneo and Gian, and coldly orders his crow soldiers to execute them. However, Nobita, Doraemon and Shizuka, with the help of the Birdpian Gusuke, rescued the two, much to the soldiers' anger.

Later, after the main characters have immigrated themselves into Birdpia by disguising themselves as Birdpians, Seagrid asks Gusuke's father to sign the treaty, but the latter says that it's too dangerous and risky, much to Seagrid's anger. Before leaving the house, he and his second-in-command, Colonel Babylon mock Gusuke for the boy's lack of ability to fly (due to a childhood trauma). That night, one soldier overhears Professor Hou's translation of an ancient tablet that gives the key to unleash Phoenixia and reports this to Seagrid, who is delighted by the news but also angered upon hearing the the report of Suneo and Gian's escape. As a result, he decides that Gusuke is a thorn that must be removed. Seagrid then kidnaps the Professor, starts his scheme for revenge and smashes the tablet to keep it in secret.

The next day, Seagrid and Babylon are among the people who oversee the annual Rally Icarus Race, which is created to recruit new members for the Bird Migration Patrolling Troops. Although Gusuke is one of the two people who win the race (the other one being Tsubakuro), Seagrid announces that Gusuke is discarded from winning due to "only flying via a plane rather than by his own wings", and disqualified from the competition for good, in order to avoid Gusuke from getting in the way of his plans. As a result, Tsubakuro and the second-placed winner, Tobio, who's also Tsubakuro's friend, are recruited as the new troopers, alongside Suneo and Gian. After this, Seagrid orders his troops to go to the frozen mountain in which Phoenixia is being imprisoned, and bring Professor Hou with them. When Suneo and Gian defy the order and blow their covers, Seagrid has them captured and locked with the Professor.

Upon arriving to the mountain, Seagrid successfully frees Phoenixia via a bomb. However, the heroes alongside the recently-self-released Icarus come to stop them and rescue Suneo, Gian and Professor Hou, and attempt to use the Evolution Ray to devolve the monster to a harmless state. Unfortunately, thanks to Babylon's intervention, the ray accidentally causes Phoenixia to grow larger. Satisfied with the monster's growth, Seagrid attempts to order it to do his biddings, but Phoenixia attacks him, knocking him unconscious. Thankfully, Icarus rescues Seagrid and asks Babylon to take care of him, before the characters head to stop the dragon.

It's unknown what happened to Seagrid afterwards, as he's not seen nor mentioned for the rest of the movie, but it's possible that he's imprisoned for his conspiracy and endangerment, possibly in the same cell that Icarus was once imprisoned in to add to the irony. This is supported by the fact that Gusuke is made the new commander by the Birdpian President after Phoenixia's defeat, implying that Seagrid's deeds have been exposed to everyone in Birdpia.
