Commander Shumway is a supporting antagonist in the first season of the CW show, The 100.
He was portrayed by Terry Chen, who also played Ethan Chang in Bates Motel, Pryce Cheng in Marvel's Jessica Jones and Owen in The Good Doctor.
Personality[]
Shumway was a corrupt, very strict and ruthless officer who encouraged the use of drastic and cruel decisions to better preserve the people on the Ark spaceship. He secretly works for Diana Sydney, participating in her rebellion but is ultimately betrayed and killed by the latter. Shumway is also the one, under Sydney's orders, who gave Bellamy Blake a pistol to assassinate Chancellor Jaha but it was a failure.
Biography[]
In the first episode, the commander offers Marcus Kane to reduce the population, surely by floating them, and denounces Bellamy who is now one of the hundred delinquents sent to Earth. Kane refuses to use harsh measures and is unaware that Shumway helped Bellamy attempt to kill Jaha.
He also participates in the arrest of Abby Griffin who used drugs in illegal quantities to save the Chancellor. Shumway then takes care of the float, but Jaha shows up and pardons her for her "crime".
In a flashback, Shumway takes charge with his guards to identify all the teenagers present at the party and discovers Octavia, Bellamy's sister, that he has both arrested. He then joins Bellamy in his cell. He gives her a chance to be with Octavia who comes down to earth with a hundred other teenagers but, in return, he has to kill Jaha and Shumway provides him with the weapon.
Back in the present, the teens on the ground manage to establish communication with the Ark. Bellamy, forgiven by Jaha for shooting him, reveals that the real culprit is Shumway, and the commander in question is arrested by Kane and locked in a cell. Diana then enters the room with Lieutenant Graco who tases him, rendering him unconscious. He then slits his wrists open, which kills him, so that it is believed to be suicide, covering up Diana's betrayal and murder.
