Commander Stenck

Commander Stenck is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Azure) in Series 13, subtitled Flux, of the British sci-fi show Doctor Who. He is a Sontaran military leader who commands the Flux Offensive to conquer the entire universe, starting with Earth.

He was portrayed by Jonathan Watson, who also portrayed fellow Sontarans Skaak and Ritskaw.

Biography[]

Stenck is a seasoned military leader in the war-obsessed Sontaran Empire. Like all Sontarans, he is actually a clone. The Empire's psychic command division was able to predict the cataclysm known as the Flux, which would destroy most of the universe, and plotted an offensive that would allow them to take the entire universe in the greatest conflict they had ever known. Stenck was seemingly placed in charge of the Flux Offensive after the Offensive's main planner, Ritskaw, was defeated.

In November of 2021, Stenck begins the Flux Offensive by invading Earth, hoping to avenge humanity's previous defeats of Ritskaw, Skaak and Commander Linx. He makes contact with an alien named the Grand Serpent who has infiltrated UNIT and arranges for UNIT to stand down. As a doglike race of aliens known as the Lupari are still defending Earth from the Flux, Stenck immediately afterwards orders an assault on the Lupari Fleet. His men easily overwhelm the unprepared Lupari before slaughtering them by flushing them out into space.

Stenck's invasion is successful and he manages to occupy the entire planet as an outpost for the coming offensive. He then broadcasts a message to the Daleks and Cybermen and suggests that they should ally with the Sontarans in hopes of surviving the Flux, as the Lupari's captured ships can withstand the Flux. Secretly, Stenck plans to lure the Dalek and Cyber fleets towards the Flux and then abandon them, wiping out the Sontaran's enemies and allowing him to conquer the remaining universe for Sontar.

A surviving Lupar named Karvanista tries to ram Stenck's command ship, but becomes caught in the ship's forcefield. Stenck forces him to land on Earth so that he can be "imprisoned, interrogated and gleefully executed", and takes Karvanista and the Thirteenth Doctor as prisoners. During the questioning, Stenck reveals to Karvanista that all the other Lupari were wiped out during the offensive, leaving Karvanista as the last Lupar. He later oversees as Claire Brown and Eustacius Jericho are strapped into machines and painfully exposed to psychic energies to predict where the Flux Event will take place. Stenck informs them that their "service" will end in either success or death, and the reward for success is death.

When Claire is exposed to an increased psychic load on Stenck's orders, which almost kills her, Stenck is contacted by Psychic Surveyor Kragar and told that the process has revealed the exact coordinates of the Flux Event. The Grand Serpent then tells Stenck that the Doctor has escaped with the help of "another Doctor", which he dismisses as the Serpent's "delusional witterings". The Serpent requests that he be allowed to go down to Earth to locate human resistance leader Kate Stewart. Stenck agrees but tells him to be quick as the Sontarans are abandoning the planet to the Flux. The Serpent takes too long and Stenck apparently leaves him behind as the Sontarans travel to the given coordinates to meet the Daleks and Cybermen.

At the meeting, Stenck greets the other armies as they prepare to negotiate a truce. Immediately after, he moves the Lupari ships so that they protect the Sontaran fleet while leaving the Daleks and Cybermen at the mercy of the Flux, proclaiming the final Sontaran victory as they are destroyed. Karvanista then hacks into the ships and moves them remotely to leave Stenck unprotected, as revenge for Stenck's genocide of his people. Stenck realises what's happening and tries to warn the other Sontarans, but his comms system has been disabled. Stenck's final act is to swear vengeance on the Doctor before the fleet is destroyed by the Flux, killing him along with the entire army.
