“ | I am Conquest. I have never failed to assimilate a chosen planet, no matter its strength. If you choose to oppose me, you will not survive. | „ |
~ Conquest threatening and introducing himself to Invincible. |
“ | I should do this now--don’t know when I’ll get this chance again. I want to thank you, Mark Grayson...Invincible. Really. From the bottom of my heart. It’s not often that I get to cut loose like this. I mean really cut loose like I have here. Usually, there are so many mission parameters. "Don’t destroy this." "Keep this person alive." But not here—not with this planet. For whatever reason, I don’t really care why, to be honest, I was told--take control, no matter what it takes…take control of the planet. So whatever you did to piss us off--thank you. This has been fun. | „ |
~ Conquest sadistically "thanks" Invincible for defying the Viltrum Empire, and his most famous quote. |
Conquest is a major antagonist in the Image Comics series Invincible.
He is a very old Viltrumite, and arguably the second most powerful behind Thragg. He fought for the Viltrum Empire for thousands of years, even after the scourge virus decimated their population he continued to single-handedly conquer planets.
His actions were done not so much out of belief in the Viltrumite cause but rather out of pure sadism and blood-lust. He is one of Invincible's arch-enemies and most powerful foes.
He will be voiced by Jonathan Banks, who also portrayed Mike Ehrmantraut in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, Zack in Beverly Hills Cop, Scotty in Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, Dirk Moran in Flipper, Pappy McAllan in Mudbound, and Black Mask in Catwoman: Hunted.
Personality[]
“ | The truth is, I want you to resist. I'm not here because I want to spread the Viltrum Empire. I'm not here because I believe in one cause or the other, or that I'm fulfilling some kind of honorable duty. I'm here because I enjoy this. | „ |
~ Conquest revealing his true motivations to Invincible. |
Conquest is portrayed as a completely irredeemable sadist. Upon arrival, he orders Invincible to “Stand ready for my arrival, worm,” showing that he is incredibly arrogant as well. He also reveals to Invincible that he does not believe in any cause, and is motivated purely by blood-lust to do battle and thrill of killing. Throughout his subsequent fight with Invincible, he repeatedly taunted him, even encouraging him to fight back harder. After supposedly killing Atom Eve, he taunted Invincible about her death and then thanked him for finally giving him an opportunity to kill and destroy freely without restrictions. His smugness briefly melted away when an enraged Invincible bit off a chunk of his shoulder, but it returned when he broke Invincible's arm.
Despite his confidence in battle, he was shown to be terrified of Thragg and begged him to spare his life after he failed to conquer Earth. In his second battle with Invincible he resumed his confident persona, but it slowly faded away as he was being choked to death.
He is similar to Battle Beast in that he fought out of bloodlust and a desire for the thrill of battle rather than loyalty to a cause, but also differed as Battle Beast possessed a great sense of honor, not fighting people he knew had no chance against him, refusing to switch sides at a whim and even wounding himself so that his opponent would not have to fight at a disadvantage while Conquest by contrast slaughtered everyone he could, especially those far weaker than him and tormented them as they died or mourned, as well as feared his own death.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Conquest was born thousands of years ago on Viltrum. Being raised on the planet of cruel conquerors likely darkened his heart from a young age. Conquest fought in and survived the Viltrumite Civil War and later fought for Viltrum in the empire's expansion.
However, the enemies of the Viltrumites eventually found a way to hurt them, by creating a virus (using the DNA of Thaedus) known as the ”Scourge Virus,” which infected the entire population, killing them off in droves every year for decades. Conquest was one of the few who survived the virus, but found that for a brief period of time after he was temporarily weakened, and during this time his right arm was torn off and his right eye was scarred and blinded by a Rognarr. His right arm would be replaced by a prosthetic.
By the time the virus had run its course, the Viltrumite population had dwindled to only a few dozen. The remaining Viltrumites changed their strategy by creating a new method of conquering worlds by sending one Viltrumite to a planet to gradually weaken its defenses. Conquest was thus sent to “assimilate” planets and was apparently the most successful of all the Viltrumites, never failing once (it is also implied that he committed countless horrific atrocities single-handedly during this time). According to Nolan, Conquest's mindset became more irrational, unstable where he became this rabid bloodlust individual who sought only the thrill of combat and the blood of enemies spaced across the battlefield, and began to not care about his empire.
Invincible War: Aftermath[]
Conquest eventually was sent to Earth to check on Mark's progress (Mark had previously been chosen to be the Viltrumite agent of Earth, although he had no plans of fulfilling his mission). The Viltrumites were planning to use Earth as a breeding camp to rebuild their population since human DNA was almost completely compatible with Viltrumite DNA. Conquest was sent specifically due to his record of never failing to assimilate planets and the likelihood that Mark would resist. Conquest arrived in the immediate aftermath of the “Invincible War,” and found Earth in ruins.
A guilt-ridden Mark chose to fight Conquest and the battle between the two commenced. Like his fight with his father, Mark's fight with Conquest was long and brutal, but the civilian casualty rate was far lower due to most of the area being evacuated prior. Their battle was shown all over the news and people mistook Conquest for Omni-Man. Mark's brother Oliver Grayson/Omni-Boy attempted to help him but Conquest broke his leg and tried to kill him before Mark rescued him. Atom Eve showed up as well and tried to fight Conquest but was impaled by his arm.
The sight of Eve's supposed death enraged Mark who fought back against Conquest with new rage-based strength, and even managed to break Conquest's prosthetic arm (although doing so broke Mark's arm as well). Eve regenerated herself right after and managed to burn Conquest's skin. Conquest tried to finish Eve off but Mark defended her, knocking the already wounded Conquest to the ground. Conquest caught Mark's next punch and crushed his hand, telling him he still had enough fight left in him. Mark then head butted Conquest until his face was bashed in, leaving him unconscious.
Invincible Returns[]
Although Mark thought Conquest was dead, he was actually very much alive. Cecil imprisoned him in a steel case six miles beneath the Earth's surface, with plans to interrogate him once he healed enough to regain consciousness. Once Conquest fully healed, however, he broke free from his imprisonment and returned to the Viltrumite warship, where he begged Thragg to spare his life and give him another chance. Thragg forgave him and ordered him to kill Mark, Oliver, Nolan, and all the others but threatened to kill him if he fails again.
The Viltrumite War[]
A shocked and confused Mark encountered Conquest and two other Viltrumites again later in space. Mark fought Conquest, demanding to know how he was alive. Conquest told him that he underestimated him before but now planned to kill him after he would force him to watch his father and brother be killed. Conquest tried to kill Oliver, but Mark tackled him and managed to grab his throat just as he had exhaled. With no air, Conquest fought furiously to break free from Mark's grip, dragging him across the planet, and eventually tearing his intestines out. Mark refused to let go despite all the pain, and Conquest suffocated to death.
After Conquest's death, Mark passed out. Nolan bandaged Mark's wounds and buried Conquest, even giving him a marker. When Oliver questioned why Nolan had given him a proper burial, Nolan told him that despite Conquest's atrocities, everything he did was out of service to Viltrum, which in a way made him a better man than Nolan.
Legacy[]
While Conquest remained permanently dead after the viltrumite war, his actions against Atom Eve, would be remembered by Thragg, reminded her who arrived on the moon to find Mark, and unleashed dual swords, as Thragg started her not to get a "clenched fist her in abdomen again", in another universe where Mohawk Mark ruled earth, Conquest was seen as his bodyguard, even expressing some manner fear to use Monster Girl to find him when the viltrumites learned Mohawk Mark had dissappeared and had admitted he couldn't handle Monster Girl's berserker form.
