Constance Hatchaway, or also better known as The Black Widow Bride, is the secondary antagonist of the popular Disney Parks ride The Haunted Mansion. She is arguably the most villainous and/or most dangerous presence on the ride, being the ghost of a bride with a murderous past life.
She is a revamped version of the original Bride character that was introduced in 2006 in the Disneyland variant, 2007 in the Walt Disney World variant, and 2023 temporarily in the Tokyo Disneyland variant. Also in 2006 and 2007, the attic area, she can be found in, was also redesigned to reflect the new character interpretation and darker tone.
Her performance model was Julia Lee and she was voiced by Kat Cressida.
Constance Hatchaway was born in Money County in California and wished to become wealthy, possibly due to a poor upbringing. She decided that she will marry as many wealthy men as possible and then murder them by beheading with a hatchet in order to inherit their wealth. She married a wealthy farmer from Secret County, California named Ambrose Harper in 1869. She later killed him with a hatchet by beheading him and inherited his wealth. She later married and beheaded Frank Banks in 1872, a wealthy banker. She also inherited his wealth. In 1874, she married a marquis from Peking, China named the Marquis de Doome and became Marchioness de Doome. She also beheaded him with her hatchet and inherited his wealth. In 1875, Constance married a wealthy gambler, railroad baron and gourmand named Reginald Caine whom she later beheaded and inherited his wealth. Constance later married a wealthy man from Newport Beach, California named George Hightower, presumably a relative of Harrison Hightower III who owned a cursed and haunted hotel in New York City, in the year 1877. George owned the titular mansion in New Orleans, Louisiana (New York in Magic Kingdom and presumably Europe or a fantasy world in Tokyo Disneyland). Constance moved into the mansion after marrying and later killed him with her hatchet and inherited the mansion and all of his money. Constance stored her wedding gifts and wedding portraits in the mansion's attic. When she entered old age, a portrait of her was hung in the mansion's art gallery where the Ghost Host committed suicide. Constance spent the rest of her life in the mansion and died of old age. After her death, her ghost haunted the attic along with the ghosts of her murdered husbands where she threatens to kill the guests touring the mansion and entering her attic with her hatchet.
The Haunted Mansion[]
A portrait of Constance as an elderly woman sitting on George's tombstone can be seen in the art gallery. After leaving the ballroom, guests enter the attic which is full of Constance's wedding gifts and portraits and where the sound of her beating heart can be heard. The heads of each of her husbands appear and disappear in each of the wedding portraits. A ghost with a top hat is seen playing on a piano a slower variant of Richard Wagner's Bridal March. Guests encounter Constance by a window admitting to her crimes and conjuring her hatchet to appear and vanish form her hands. Guests escape the attic and Constance by going out the window and encounter the Hatbox Ghost before falling into the graveyard.
2025[]
When the car passes through the attic, passengers see that all the wedding portraits change but all of Constance’s husbands, instead of losing their heads, they all vanish. As they pass by the attic window, they see her levitating by a window, glowing purple blue, and holding a candelabra with her heart visibly beating and glowing pinkish red. A one eyed black cat stands next to her. However, the story most likely did not change as the name Constance Hatchaway remained and Constance Hatchaway was still available for meet and greets during Sweethearts Nite in 2025.
The Haunted Mansion Comic Book Series[]
Constance is a minor villain in the comic book series The Haunted Mansion by Slave Labor Graphics, which ran for seven issues from 2006 to 2007. She only appears in the first issue.
Disney Kingdoms[]
Constance appears as a supporting antagonist in the Haunted Mansion miniseries of the 2016 comic book series Disney Kingdoms by Marvel Comics. Here, she tries to get the main protagonist Danny Crowe to marry her, claiming that she committed her past crimes simply because she loved weddings. It is also revealed that because she was one of the few to actually die on the property, she has a certain authority and power on the grounds; most notably, the ability to permanently destroy other ghosts by decapitating them with her spectral hatchet. Despite her antagonism, she indirectly saves Danny and the other ghosts by decapitating the horseback rider and the main antagonist, The Captain, thus breaking the curse of the mansion.
Ghost Post[]
Though Constance never makes a direct appearance in the Ghost Post interactive game, her presence is felt in the greater story. A wedding invitation (for her marriage to the the Marquis de Doome) was among the first set of artifacts sent to players, which when chilled transformed into invitation to the diplomat's funeral. She is mentioned in a conversation heard between the Hitchhiking Ghosts over the Phantom Radio (with Gus wildly swinging around a hatchet as they do). It is also very heavily implied that Constance is behind the "Aunt Agony" advice section of the Grim Gazette, since the author makes frequent allusions to having had multiple husbands who died under unusual circumstances.
The Haunted Mansion: The Black Widow Bride[]
Constance reappears as the main antagonist of the online game based off the ride. Here, the player must guide the 998 other ghosts, including Constance's former husbands, to safety from her.
Other Appearances[]
Epic Mickey[]
In the video game Epic Mickey, Horace Horsecollar asks Mickey Mouse to help him solve a mystery in the Lonesome Manor, another haunted mansion. Here, he wants to find evidence that the former mistress of the manor, Constance Hatchaway, killed her previous husbands, implying that Lonesome Manor either belonged to one of Constance's husbands or that it was a parody of the original Haunted Mansion with a different name. Her hatchet is found by Horace in the Library.
Kinect Disneyland Adventures[]
Constance appears as the final boss in the Haunted Mansion minigame.
Disney Crossy Road[]
Constance was one of the rarer unlockable characters in a brief weekend challenge.
Disney XD[]
In a Halloween bumper for Disney XD, Constance encounters the titular protagonists of the show Pickle and Peanut.
In another bumper, Huey, Dewy, and Louie from the 2017 DuckTales are looking for her wedding ring, but encounter the Hatbox Ghost instead of her.
Constance is the main antagonist of the 2021 Halloween special Muppets Haunted Mansion. She first befriends Pepe and takes him to the attic. She manipulates him into marrying her, but is foiled by Gonzo. She waves to Pepe and Gonzo, begging them to "hurry back" at the end of the special.
2023 film[]
Constance appears in this film, played by Lindsay Lamb. She appears as one of the Mansion's more aggressive ghosts. One of 66 souls to have died in Gracey Manor after the Hatbox Ghost took over, Constance has a much more ghoulish appearance in death and serves as an obstacle in the mortals attempts to solve the mystery of the Mansion. When Ben Matthias goes up into the Attic to find Madame Leota's crystal ball locked in a trunk, she chases him through the room before he iss able to escape back down the stairs. Later in the film's climax, she leads a group of ghosts in chasing Father Kent through the house until he is able to convince them to join forces and help defeat the Hatbox Ghost, identified as Alistair Crump. She later joins the rests of the ghosts in celebration after Crump is defeated and is also seen with them when the mortals reunite on Halloween to celebrate with them.
The stretching room painting depicting an elderly Constance also appears in the film, though is treated as a separate helpful character that assists Ben and Travis in finding a way out of the Stretching Room when they become trapped there.
Personality[]
While her personality in life is never fully revealed, it can be assumed that she was greedy and cold towards her victims. It is unknown if she felt any remorse, but due to her repeated murders, it is highly unlikely. Somewhere down the line, she began to enjoy the killings and became a sadist, openly loving killing her husbands.
After death, her ghost was completely consumed by her murderous side, as she gleefully admits to her murders and threatens to kill the visitors.
Appearance[]
When she was alive, Constance was a beautiful woman with pale skin and blonde hair. As an old woman, she had gray hair and wore a dark purple and pink dress with a purple shawl with a gold brochet and black shoes.
As a ghost, Constance wears her wedding dress. She and her dress glow blue and has a permanent evil grin on her face. In 2025, she floats and glows purplish blue with small ghostly orbs surrounding her. Her heart is visible and glows a pinkish red. She also carries a three pronged candelabra.
Trivia[]
Constance has no relation to the 2003 movie, The Haunted Mansion as the film came out three years before she was installed into the ride. However, the movie does focus on the concept of brides and weddings and Edward Gracey’s mother and father are named Abigail and George, a reference to the stretching portrait that features Constance.
Constance appears in a short stage show at the Disney Parks that was held as a hard ticket event for the Haunted Mansion's 40th anniversary. The show was about her demise and shed some light upon the subject, but was gleefully inconsistent with the Stretching Portrait, since it featured her dying pretty young. It is generally considered non-canonical due to this.
According to the online game, The Black Widow Bride, one of Constance's murdered husbands, Frank Banks, is the Coffin Occupant in the Conservatory.
She does not appear in Disneyland Paris's Phantom Manor or Hong Kong Disneyland's Mystic Manor. Mystic Manor has no ghosts and is not intended to be scary (rather magical). Phantom Manor features a bride as the main protagonist, but it is confirmed to not be Constance and is, in fact, a heroine.
Constance is removed from the Nightmare Before Christmas themed Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay every Halloween and Christmas and replaced by a giant snake with Jack's naughty-or-nice list in its mouth and the long-lost Hatbox Ghost. All of her gifts are also replaced with Jack Skellington's Christmas presents.
In some merchandise and in The Haunted Mansion: The Black Widow Bride, Constance is portrayed with a beating heart like the past incarnations of the Bride character. However, the actual version in the Mansion and in continuity does not have this.
In the Main Street Penny Arcade in Main Street U.S.A, the fortune teller Esmeralda has tarot cards of the Stretching Portraits including the one of Constance on George's tombstone.
