~ Wallace mumbling after the Cooker does nothing.

The Cooker is the main antagonist of Aardman's 1989 short film A Grand Day Out, the first installment of the Wallace and Gromit franchise.

Appearance[]

The Cooker is a white rectangular machine with an antenna and an oven-like drawer. It has two hatches on its side that spring out arms when activated.

Biography[]

A Grand Day Out[]

Shortly after landing on the Moon, Wallace spots the machine sitting alone. He goes up to it and inserts a coin but nothing happens, Wallace eventually grows bored and walks away with Gromit. A few moments later the machine activates and starts moving around getting used to his surroundings.

Later, it spots Wallace and Gromit having a picnic and eating chunks of Moon cheese, angered by this it pulls out a bat and attempts to whack Wallace in the head but fortunately runs out of power before it can do so. Wallace bonks his head while getting up and is confused by the machine's presence. Wallace inserts another coin and moves with Gromit back to the rocket with a basket of the Moon cheese.

After the machine wakes up again it finds a magazine about skiing and becomes intrigued. It then pulls out a telescope and sees Wallace and Gromit taking off. Wanting to achieve its dream it panics and runs to the rocket before it can take off. Wallace sees this gets scared and prepares for take-off, as this is happening the Machine pulls out a Swiss army knife to cut open a hole in the rocket's exterior shell before entering it. It then grabs and lights match to see its surroundings only to accidentally ignite the rocket's fuel tank, blowing it away from the force of the explosion, it tries to hold on to the rocket's panels but it only proves futile as the panels break off leaving him stranded on the moon once more.

Feeling sad the Cooker then realizes it can use the broken panels as skiing equipment and finally achieves its dream, waving goodbye to Wallace and Gromit as it skis down the hills on the Moon.

Other Media[]

It appears in the more recent Wallace and Gromit mobile game The Big Fix Up as a contraption the player can use. It also appeared in the Star Wars Visions short I Am Your Mother in the background of one of the scenes.
