Copperhead (DC Animated Universe)

Copperhead is a minor antagonist in the DC Animated Universe series Justice League and its sequel Justice League Unlimited.

He is a thievish snake-like mercenary who has gone up against the Justice League on several occasions in his criminal career most notably as a member of Lex Luthor's and Aresia's Injustice Gangs (both times ended badly for him). Copperhead was also apart of the Legion of Doom before he and most of the organization's members were murdered by Darkseid.

He was originally voiced by Efrain Figueroa, and later by Jose Yenque.

Biography[]

Justice League[]

Copperhead was selected as a member of Injustice Gang as part of Lex Luthor's plan to destroy Superman and the Justice League in exchange for a large sum of money. Copperhead was captured in the team's first battle with the League, but not before sinking his venomous fangs into Batman. When Superman and Flash went to Stryker's to interrogate him about Luthor's whereabouts, Copperhead simply mocked Superman about his boy scout attitude and was escorted back to his cell.

He reappeared in the second incarnation of the Injustice Gang led by Aresia. At first, this gang was much more successful despite several close encounters with the Justice League, but it was revealed that Aresia's ultimate plan was to wipe out all the men in the world with a special type of germ warfare. She used all the male members of the gang, including Copperhead as test subjects. Copperhead survived, however, and was once again imprisoned at Stryker's Island. He escaped during a prison break with Solomon Grundy, but was caught by Hawkgirl and Green Lantern.

In the wake of Superman's "death", Copperhead attacked Metropolis along with several other villains only to be captured once again.

Justice League Unlimited[]

Copperhead worked with Cheetah, KGBeast and Blockbuster in robbing a gold vault, which was met with resistance from the Justice League. As Batman flung KGBeast down the hall in the background, Copperhead was trying to climb up a pillar to safety, but was thwarted by Green Lantern. After the battle was over Copperhead and his cohorts were banished to another realm by Mordred along with all the other adults. Initially, Copperhead believed they had been sent to "the bad place" on Judgement Day, but Green Lantern assured him that was not the case. He was sent back to Earth once the spell had been broken by the Justice League and Etrigan.

Some time later, Copperhead joined Gorilla Grodd's Legion of Doom. He assisted the Legion in their attack on Gorilla City, during which he was seen being thrown around and thwarted by a gorilla. After he returned to Legion headquarters, Lex Luthor seized control from Grodd, appointing himself as new head of the Legion. When Good attempted a coup against Luthor, Copperhead and a majority of the Legion of Doom sided with him. In the end, he and the rest of Grodd's loyalists were frozen by a turncoat Killer Frost in an attempt to regain Luthor's favor. Soon after, Copperhead and those frozen along with him were killed when Darkseid destroyed the Hall of Doom with his Omega Beams.

Powers and Abilities[]

Copperhead was a skilled contortionist, able to wrap himself around opponents. Copperhead also had snake-like traits, such as a poisonous bite, forked tongue and reptilian eyes.

Trivia[]

This is the first animated incarnation of Copperhead.
He initially had "feelings" for fellow Injustice Gang member Cheetah, but this attraction was short-lived.
In Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, Copperhead seemed to show some elements of "splicing", a term used in Batman Beyond to denote people who had their genes augmented with animal DNA. Copperhead has slightly serpentine features and a long forked tongue.
Because of the Bat-Embargo to limit or ban the use of Batman related characters from any media source outside of the Batman Begins movie franchise and The Batman Animated Series meant that only more obscure Bat-villains such as the KGBeast, Clock King, Blockbuster or Copperhead would appear in the DCAU.
