~ Cornacabra's villainous breakdown

Cornacabra is a sentient corn from the game Maize and function as the petty comedic antagonist throughout most of the gameplay.

Description[]

Cornacabra is a albino corn with a speech impediment whom the other corn people describe the character as "a little weird. His self-righteous behavior leads him to believe he is more capable than the red queen thus why he attempted to take over.

Despite the former, he still showed loyalty to her. His beliefs consist of the corns being the perfect race and all others are inferior, including "meat bags". This leads him to attempt to capture the player, which usually fail due to his incompetence.

Usually, he seen alone mumbling to himself and for some reason has a hatred for mugs and will tip them over whenever then is one standing. he also has a fear of posters despising "the devourer" (which is a man that cooking popcorn) and will run when he saw one. Though this is partially due to his overreaction to events.

Gameplay[]

Not much is known about his origins, it's simply implied that he was a result of the experiments that Bob and Ted ran. The Queen claims that they took pity on him when they "found him in the depths", so it's implied his time down there caused a loss of sanity.

He is first seen when the player enters the not-so-secret base as a giant monster slicking his way to the other side of the door at the end of the entrance hallway.

He will later appear as you sneak through vents inside of a conference room, where he will exclaim how "it should be him". After some ramblings to himself and deciding to look for us, he quickly scribbles a drawing on the whiteboard (saying it's his best work yet) and runs off. He then runs back into the room to knock over a glass, a habit he has.

He once again appears from a vent inside of a laboratory. He searches for the player only to give up and believes the player to be of higher being than the others in the facility. He then doodles a crude drawing of the Queen on a whiteboard before leaving the room, only to return quickly to knock over a beaker.

Cornaintro

The Cornacabra's first scene

Cornacabra returns later on in the game in the bedroom when the player is with Vladdy, the talking Russian teddy bear. He at first is disappointed that we were not up to the intelligence and power that he expected us to be and prepares to torture us (beyond our small brain's comprehension so he says). He is only interrupted by Vladdy, who critiques his face, which it differs from other corn. He questions who the talking bear is at first, but as Vladdy persists with the insults, Cornacabra shows his offense and speaks on how he is the pinnacle of his race. He then grabs Vladdy to exact revenge on the insults, only for Vladdy to circle around Cornacabra's large body, ending with Cornacabra's annoyance that Vladdy started biting him. He quickly dismisses the fight afterward, claiming he won as Vladdy bit, which is cheating. He then runs out of the room, exclaiming his retreat is not a retreat.

He appears briefly again, but only as a nuisance to the player who tries to fix crates with a crane, as Cornacabra messes with the progress. Once the player completes the puzzle and ruins Cornacabra's machine, Cornacabra panics and runs away.

Once the player reaches the office, they request that Vladdy enter a vent to unlock a door. As Vladdy dives deep, he manages to unlock it, only to be found by Cornacabra, who once again tries to fight Vladdy, only for him to once again bite. Refusing defeat, Cornacabra fights through and manages to kidnap Vladdy and hold him hostage.

Once the player reaches the "Torture Room", they find Cornacabra controlling a DJ booth with Vladdy sitting on the stage. As Cornacabra states this is the player's worst nightmare and shows off Vladdy, who seems unphased and even waves kindly at the player, much to Cornacabra's dismay. He claims the player won't suffer alone as many scarecrows all dance on the dance floor, and address the player as "brother". This is the moment that Cornacabra reveals to the player that they have been a scarecrow this entire time, adding that we are just one more in a long line of failures. He then goes on a rant on how he's surrounded by idiots and he should be in charge to lead a war and takeover against the "fleshy demons that imprisoned us". He finally sentences the player to be forced to dance for all eternity but is cut off by the Ruby Queen, who vouges that the player has succeeded in all of their tasks, to which Cornacabra throws off as luck and close calls. He demands that the player be exiled and cut off, but the Queen threatens to send him to "the room" (a room with the poster of the devourer, a man cooking popcorn). He hastily begs for mercy and releases Vladdy and the player before running off.

Afterwards, the military arrives to destroy the facility, but their plans are thwarted by Vladdy and the player who manage to destroy all the drones through dancing and antennas. Once the military is taken care of the player says farewell to the Queen and the corn before they take off in a rocket, only for the military radio to chime in that one drone still remains but they don't have control as something is on top of it. Soon after, Cornacabra arrives atop a military drone with a metal cane, claiming everything needs to die. With nothing left to lose, he silences the Queen when she speaks up and claims that once he's killed everybody in his way he will reign and establish a new order, and then seek vengeance on humanity. He then locks in on the player, preparing to attack them. But the player chucks an English muffin (the first item picked up in the game) at Cornacabra's face. Seem unfazed at first, he then begins to jolt violently on the drone, flying sporadically before shooting upwards in circles and diving downwards into a massive explosion, ending his petty villainy and letting the corn go to their promised land.

Personality[]

Cornacabra is not by any means a serious villain, but rather a comedic villain getting away with petty things, such as his habit of knocking glasses over or forcing scarecrows to dance as punishment. While he is an experiment from Bob and Ted, he has no love for humans or his creators in general, preferring them all to die. But while he has these schemes, he always tends to run away after an encounter.

Shown almost in every scene he' 's in, he shows great disdain for the Ruby Queen, always saying he would be much better as a leader rather than her. He also looks down on his fellow corn, seeing himself as a higher being in their standards and them as rather stupid, which they kind of are.

Trivia[]

  • His name as "Cornacabra" is never spoken in the game as he's only referred to as "him". The name came from the credits and its only appearance.
  • While it seems like he is responsible for all the human deaths in the facility, it's later revealed everybody just got fired. While some did die, none of them were by Cornacabra's hands.
  • He has a very profound lisp.
  • While he speaks very highly and is seen as the big bad of the game, he is only ever in one combative encounter and is easily defeated by the toss of a muffin.
  • Although he didn't successfully kill the Queen and her subordinates during his short-lived rampage, the rocket the corn people took off in explodes soon after his death, popping and killing the Queen and all the other corns.
  • It's said in notes from Bob and Ted that they did tamper with the intelligence in the making of the corn people, therefore they may have wanted to make Cornacabra a special breed and have some importance.
