Corporal Diaz is a major antagonist in the Tintin comic book The Broken Ear.
He is a former colonel and aide-de-camp who was demoted to Corporal in favor of Tintin becoming the new Colonel and aide-de-camp of General Alcazar. Angered that his career was ruined, he joins a group of Mexican bandits and attempts to kill both Tintin and Alcazar in several ways, though his final attempt with a time bomb took away his own life.
Biography[]
Colonel Diaz is first seen with General Alcazar on the balcony, watching Tintin being freed from execution by rebels. As the drunk Tintin is brought to Alcazar, he is promoted to Colonel, but Diaz is against the idea as he mentions that there are only 49 corporals and that there are already 3487 colonels in the San Theodoran army, suggesting that Tintin becomes a Corporal instead. This annoys Alcazar who decides to add one more corporal, which is Diaz himself.
As both Tintin and Diaz are getting their new uniforms, Diaz gets furious and vows to get revenge on both Alcazar and Tintin for ruining his career. To have a chance at dispatching, he joins a group of Mexican terrorists, where he uses several strategies to attempt at killing both the general and his aide-de-camp. First, he throws a bomb inside Alcazar's room while he and Tintin were playing checkers, but the bomb is thrown back at him by Tintin, hitting his head and into the fountain.
Afterwards, he places a small barrel of dynamite near the wall of the building, but as he was about to light it, a cigar that Alcazar threw out the window lands on his hat, setting it on fire and causing Diaz to fall into a fountain to put out the fire. He then successfully lights it up and hides behind the statue of General Olivaro, but the explosion doesn't do any damage to the building and instead causes the head of the statue to fall off on his head, injuring him. The terrorist chief mentions that dynamite stuck on a wall only produces a loud bang and doesn't do any damage. If he buried it, the building would've blown up and both Alcazar and Tintin would have been killed in the blast. Despite this failure, the explosion coincidentally caused Alcazar to suffer from jaundice for a few days, leading Tintin to replace him for the time being.
Diaz is later given a time bomb that is set to eleven o' clock the next morning. However, unknown to him, Alcazar was tricked into believing that Tintin was a spy the entire time due to R.W. Tricker framing him. This leads to Tintin being demoted from his Colonel position and sentenced to death, but as Diaz was made Colonel again, it was already too late, as the clock actually showed eleven o'clock, which caused the bomb to explode, killing Diaz in the process.
